Daybreaker is what happens when Celestia decides she's sacrificed too much for her ponies, and doesn't care any more.  This seemed to me like a good explanation.

This made me think that the writers were forshadowing Daybreaker. Also, in an alternate timeline Daybreaker rules Equestria and she teaches her protege to harness the power of the sun.

I don't think they had Daybreaker planned yet in that point, but it could be that they used it as base for her design.
