I don't like facial hair in general, and this certainly doesn't help matters.

I think it adds more interest and character to his face, he clearly takes pride in it and grooms it well enough. Back then, when they had no video game consoles or tvs they grew these beards as a hobby, a hobby that followed them everywhere and could be shown everywhere. For a man to put effort into making a beard look good shows a great deal of wealth and power, most people of this era could barely afford shoes never mind the cost of managing a beard a certain way. This is a richmans beard, the alternative would be a homeless mans beard.
