Not really, I'm just half American and half European, so I get to pick and choose which grammar rules I like.

It's easier to grammar-check a document for consistent use of 'recognise'/'recognize' when you use 's' for everything, because you can just search the document for the letter 'z' and have pretty much no results show up besides 'recognize'-type errors.

IRL quantum destabiliser = anything that can measure the properties of particles.

When certain properties of particles are measured, other specific properties become harder to measure. For example, if you measure the exact speed of a particle, the exact position of the particle becomes impossible to measure accurately. There is no currently known reason for this phenomenon, referred to as the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.

In addition, if you measure certain properties of particles-that-are-behaving-as-waves (cf. wave-particle duality, explained two Duality-posts ago), such as their position, the particles stop behaving as waves and return to behaving as particles. This second, similar, phenomenon is called quantum waveform collapse, and the reason behind it is also unknown and currently a matter of intense scientific and philosophical debate.

 

TL;DR: If you want to destabilise a quantum (a.k.a. a wave-particle thingy), all you have to do is measure its properties. Thus, a quantum destabiliser is anything you use to measure particles' properties. Gravity Falls is probably pseudoscience.

If you wanted one of my classic pseudoscience yes-yes-much-legitimacy answers instead of a boring 'no-one knows', then it's probably because particles are all actually incredibly hygiene-obsessed (hey, you don't get to be considered a mathematically idealised point particle if you leave yourself coated in grime constantly) and are currently all in the middle of eons-long showers (we all know the person).

Obviously, the particles don't want us mathematically reconstructing a model of them taking a shower (because seriously who would), and thus squirm around whenever we try to take measurements of their properties, messing up all our readings and making us engage in intense philosophical debates about why they're doing it (they're just trying to take a shower in peace stop overanalysing it guys).

Duh.

Science can't explain what life is or really why it exists or how basically anything else that comprises a major component of life works (love, morals, etc.).

On top of that, we have everything from how black holes work to why particles don't collapse into tiny black holes to why particles even exist to why our universe appears to be ordered in a logical fashion (i.e., why maths works) to why the aforementioned particles-changing-when-observed dealio occurs to why the second law of thermodynamics is a thing to what that weird thing behind your fridge is.

Science can't explain a lot of things.
