Why does Crystal Prep have both a dean and a principal?

Maybe the names might be different in prep school, and I don't watch the show, but isn't the Dean in charge of the students (discipline, housing, etc.) and the principal in charge of administration (finance, taxes, etc.?)

Maybe because it isn't a regular prep school.

UK prep schools have a Headmaster/mistress, Deputy Head and then Head Teacher. 

I have no idea what a Dean is. We don't have then here.

I just went to a regular public high school, your typical one that Canterlot High is based off of, but we had a principal, a couple of vice principals, and a dean. I think my middle school had a dean, too. So it's certainly possible for a school that isn't a college/university to have a dean and a principal.
