What if when luna returned from the moon, she was not nightmare moon.

What if the day Luna was gonna return to Equestria from the moon after 1000 years, was not nightmare moon and that she was finally rid of trying to take over Equestria and have eternal night. I search about this and get nothing on google. Does anyone have any idea what would happen?

Twilight would be doing her thing to ready the Summer Sun Celebration, Luna pulls a Canterlot Wedding says loudly "WHAT HATH I MISSED DEAR PONIES?", and ... 

 

then Discord shows up and the show starts there

Without Nightmare Moon to prompt the search for the Elements of Harmony, chances are Twilight would very likely have just considered the other members of the Mane 6 that she met during the Summer Sun Celebration just normal ponies to organize an event with and would not likely have made friends with them. Assuming no other strange events take place, she likely would have just gone back to Canterlot and there'd basically be no MLP:FiM, at least not as we know it. Maybe she would have learned the value of friendship via her 'old friends' from Amending Fences?

It's an interesting question, but as others have stated, it wouldn't have been an interesting story and the actual story would have started with something else.

So I have two things to say about the premise of the question:

1) Luna IS nightmare moon. Her rage was not quenched by the banishment, and nothing at all was ever revealed about what when on, if anything, in Luna's mind during that time, so she no reason to suddenly reform then return.

2) The foundation of storytelling is trouble. Stories need trouble or they are simply not interesting. Luna may be a background pony, however, her plot arc in Equestria is extremely significant because she was (and still is) so much trouble.

The elements would never be found, so Discord never came out of his statue, Chrysalis was still stopped and Sombra too, but Tirek would have ruled forever.

It essentially would create another one of those alternate timeline dealios where the lack of the elements of harmony being together would eventually lead to Equestria's destruction, sadly. One way or another.

Yes and no.

• If the elements had never bond with the mane 6, Discord would never escape his statue prison.
• With Chrysalis it was the love between Shining and Cadence which was the magical force that blasted away the changelings.
• Sombra was the Crystal Heart and not the elements.
• Tirek was indeed stopped by the elements, but if Celestia wasn't so lazy, she could have captured him by herself and inprisoned him.
• The one threat that was left were the plunderseeds of Discord.
