I think a mattress would be the best bet, you can make easier use of other items as a makeshift blanket or pillow, but a an actual mattress would make life at least slightly more bearable.

I remember receiving a rather nasty shock from one of those joke pens before, but that's about it. I have yet to be struck by lightning.
