Sonata for Luna

Ok, This is a looong story, so here we go with the shorter one :

I have worked on and off for over a year with this Trio Sonata. This is not the normal type of music I make, so there was many many obstacles to owercome to make it a reality. Everything is computer made. Some parts are live played and some are step-edited, simply because they are to hard to play for me. Sometimes I have lowered the tempo while recording to make live recording possible for me. Actually the hardest part is not playing or editing, It´s the flow of the music that takes time to rule out. For me looong time.

And now finaly the result is devoted to Luna´s grace.

-I know very well that this is not the right way to perform a Trio Sonata, but, Hey, this is only a computer aproximation from a guy not musically schooled. And isn´t it fantastic that you can come up with compositions from your head with the help of a computer ?

Why does the sonata sound so happy, this is Luna right ?

-Well, this is how Luna feels this night in the couch, when she thinks back on what she has done lately for Equestria.

For Nightmare Moon this would be another story....

Hope you like it....

I'm speechless. Just.... wow :).

What a beautiful work of art. My hats off to you .

I would say that you've got quality down pat. The way I see it, for your next piece the only thing left to improve upon is making something like this but faster (as you said it took a long time). Well, this piece itself was probably a great deal of practice for you anyway :P

Big compliments again on such a wonderful piece :o.

You've got some skills there :).

Celestia does not look happy about this. I wonder what's on her mind ........ (check my 'about me' for more ;))

Ok...

So right off the bat...your key choice is off. It would be best to take the relative minor of Eb, which is C minor. In addition, you came in way too loud in the intro. You need more dynamic range among your instruments.

This is more of a baroque sonata, as it contains a Handel/Bach feel to it. If you wanted to make this a classical sonata, you'll need more movements. This piece could act as the second movement, as the second movement in a Sonata that's in a base minor key is major (example is Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata in C# minor). I see you went to the V of the I and then resolved later back to the I. The biggest thing however, is that you spent too much time on the I, whether it was in root or inverted. Returning to the I was rather awkward, as you took the vi of the V (the relative minor of Bb, which is G), then went to the Bb7 to resolve to the I. The best way to get back to the I of the base key was to make your way to the V. Then, minor the V of the V. That becomes the ii of the I and the move to the V and resolve back to the I of the base key, in this case, Eb Major.

In terms of your instrumentation and orchestration, you need tons of work. Your harpsichord should not contain repeated chords, especially in that in that tempo, as it is almost impossible to play those repeated chords on a harpsichord. Remember, the mechanism of a harpsichord is much different than that of a piano, because in a harpsichord, the strings are plucked instead of hammered. Chords on a harpsichord are usually rolled to create a strumming effect. Your solo strings needed to be turned up in the mix and your backup strings needed to be turned down. Also, adding human touch and quantization would add much more expression to this piece. Without it, this piece is sounding very digital. I can hear a wind instrument in the background. It is most likely a piccolo. You put too much reverb on it. Baroque pieces do not need reverb at all. Bring it out to the front by taking away all the reverb.

All in all, this piece could use a ton of work...or even a complete redo. Don't be discouraged by what I said in my critique, it's all to help you grow. I'm always here if you need me. Shoot me a PM if you don't understand certain things I said in my critique.

Ok thanks for listening !

I wrote this :

Because I know nothing of writing music more than what I hear and feel. So that´s why all is "wrong" in a musical professional point of view.

It is a Neo Baroque thingabout, just as it says in the Youtube description. And it is meant to sound digital and reverberated, I like those artifacts when it comes

to make a song for a digitaly created animated Princess :)

No I will not be discouraged, I know you want to help, I´m verry happy for that. Sadly I´m to musically "unknowing" to understand.

Wow! You've been through a lot to create this wonderful work of art! Be proud of yourself as this project was no easy feat.
