Was MLP used as a joke on 4chan, and then adult fans?

Saw this documentary. If so it wins the internet.

But i honestly don't get why people gets creeped out by adult men watching it. That's like comedy value to me. As in the biggest imaginative stereotype of a person you can get that would fit that description

Based on what I've read, many of the early fans started watching as a joke but ended up liking the show. Though it should be noted that not all of the early bronies came from 4chan, and I'm sure there were various factors involved. Some people started watching because they liked Lauren Faust's earlier work (especially Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends).
