Let's say someone started a thread called "Count to 10,000"

The first post starts at "1", the second post will say "2," the next post will say "3," and so on, and so forth. The goal is to reach the number 10,000. Of course, this would take at least 10,000 posts. 

For this thread, the goal is to reach the number 2018, before the year 2018 starts (i.e. January 1st, 2018, 12:00 AM).  

We managed to count to 2018 before that date, so we win the thread.
