Gallus joined the royal guards as an act of defiance since, he wasn't allowed back in Griffonstone after being banished by the Order of Griffons. 

 

The details are a little foggy but I believe their argument had something to do with Gallus being close friends with the seaponies.

I wonder what caused a rift between griffons and hippogriffs/seaponies? I thought creatures so similar would be claw-in-claw. :confused:
