Why not make floating earth ponies while we are at it?

making ponies fly was too difficult, remember? Making them able to walk on clouds, then putting bunches and bunches of them on cloud zeppelins would be more efficient.

would multiple unicorns make it easier?

Every unicorn sent to help an unnecessary and difficult spell is one less unicorn for all the other tasks.

is sure you inly need a bout 3 for it to be easy, but the cloud and zeplin thing sounds better

If there is a military force, I'd imagine its fairly middle ages. Earth ponies doing typical sword combat while unicorns act as a form of archer. Maybe unicorns know a few other spells outside of magic missile, but that's up for debate. Pegasi would be the aerial recon. And of course you have the mane 6 and the elements of harmony, creating an über laser as a form of artillery.

Equestria

Military

THE LUNAR FORCES:

Following the dissolving of Celestia's military and regime, the Lunar Rebel forces were officially organized into the Lunar Forces with branches of the Navy, Air Force, and Army. While there are heads of each branch, all proceedings are approved by the Ministry of Wartime Technology and by Luna herself.

Commander in Chief: Princess Luna

Sky Marshall of the Air Force: Rainbow Dash

General of the Army: Applejack

Admiral of the Navy: Derpy Hooves

The Lunar Army:

Commanded by Applejack who reports directly to Luna, the Lunar Army is the backbone of Equestria's military operations. The makeup of the army is a mix of Earth ponies, Unicorns, and Pegasi. A brief description of each race is below, as well as there unique abilities within the Army.

Earth pony: The earth pony is historically robust and dependable, a literal "workhorse", an earth pony is the main bulk of the infantry being able to handle weapons from small arms to Battle Saddles. Structurally, an earth pony is larger than either a pegsus or a unicorn, the most famous of all earth ponies is Applejack. Her hind legs carry the reputation of deadly force as a result of a lifetime of applebucking.

Unicorn: A unicorn has the unique ability of minor telekinesis. Being able to magically manipulate intricate machinery and equipment. A unicorn is typically relied on as being a specialist, their magic allows them to hold weapons steady and load ammunition (for example). Tasks which none but the more experienced earth ponies, would find awkward to handle. Of all unicorns in existence, the magical abilities of Twilight Sparkle and Princess Luna far surpass those of other unicorns. Their magic allowing them short distance transportation and minor healing.

Pegasus: Similar in build to a unicorn, the defining feature of a pegasus are its wings. These allow for (obviously) flight. Pegasi are trained from birth in flight schools so that each may achieve admission to the Lunar Air Force, which consists almost entirely of pegasi. With the introduction of jet fighters, using pegasi as aerial combatants has become an obsolete practice, but is still taught should the situation arise. Of all pegasus ponies, none is as fast and daring as the Sky Marshall herself; Rainbow Dash. It has been said her incredible speed is such that it can match even some of the most modern of aircraft, her aerobatic skill outstrips many of the same aircraft as she is not limited by an airframe.

The Lunar Navy:

Commanded by admiral Derpy Hooves, who likewise reports

Did anyone see how the Royal Guards were holding their lances in "Canterlot Wedding"? That can offer some clues about the role of infantry.

Which would mean they may be more than just a ceremonial force

Clearly at least Cloudsdale has had a military in its past, considering the pegasus leader that founded Cloudsdale was basically a Roman legionnaire named Commander Hurricane. I think it is safe to assume each of Equestria's three founding kingdoms had their own military in the past, since there was talk of war in Hearth's Warming Eve. Perhaps after the three tribes were united, their respective militaries were significantly downsized to the point where we only have our current Royal Guard.

Also, Granny Smith's drill instructor routine had to come from somewhere, right?

Is there an epic pony war in the future?

You stole my rant right from me. BRAVO!! :D

*brohoofs the post* /)

What I will add to your post is that the Wonderbolts are not just for show, after all they responded to Spike's destruction of Ponyville with near lethal force. Also the context of the word "tank" seems to indicate something slow and armored. If they have tanks then there must be a military that uses them.

I'm really not sure.

There must be somepony that is a naval commander or something.

Well they do have airships, and also Equestria must have had some kind of sea-faring era and some manner of space program as can be seen by a number of costumes in "Luna Eclipsed" such as Pipsqueaks pirate outfit, the little astronaut filly, and lastly the stallion who had a shark attached to his bum in reference to the movie "Jaws".

Did anyone see how the Royal Guards were holding their lances in "Canterlot Wedding"? That can offer some clues about the role of infantry.

They likely use "line tactics" like in wars prior to the 20th century, with the support of artillary(Pinkie's party cannon has to based off of something), magic attacks/defenses, and tanks(which may also double as artillary).

I believe the Equestrian Royal Guard is but the "cavalry" component, kinda like the British Life Guards or Napoleon's Cuirassiers. However, I must assume it goes further than that.

If we base it on, say, the Napoleonic age (which kinda fits MLP, in a way), I would suppose their military should have the 3 components Blue mentioned.

While in real life there's a distinct partitionance between Land (Army), Sea (Navy), Sky (Air Force) and Space (Civilian governance or direct contravention thereof) it's probably a simplified system of Earth, Horn and Wing, since all three can partake in different capacities at the others, with the sole exception of Earth ponies transiting the sky.

A smart commander would place, by excellence, Earth ponies as Line infantry, Engineers or Sappers, due to their robust size and muscles, while keeping Unicorns as Light Infantry and Skirmishers/Rifles. Those who are fast enough would be placed, no matter their "tribe", in a "cavalry" division, which would charge with lances, swords, or simply sharpened horns.

Pegasi would form the aerial component, fighting in an early WW-1 style (a single pegasus would have a really hard time carrying a heavy bomb or weapon, kinda like old bombers).

The naval component would not be very different to that used in the Napoleonic Age.
