Tumblr to ban adult content starting December 17th

Recommended Posts

Eh, if you ask me, this is what they get for not giving us options to filter out the adult content (basically, forcing us to see pornography against our will). But, I haven't really gone to tumblr, much.

1) You can't disable it. 2) Then that's the kids fault 3) Again, they aren't doing this to prevent kids from seeing porn. They're doing this because it's easier for them to remove all adult content than actually solving their childporn issue.

I guess they're playing it safe rather than just skimming through all the blogs manually.

Again, they're not fixing a thing. Porn bots have been, are, and will be an issue long after the ban until the site dies. Which is soon. So, they're trying to kill a house fly by blowing up the house with C4. And the house belongs to Tumblr. Oh, and the fly is the CP and porn bots, which will live on.

Because Tumblr is gonna fuck over a large portion of their userbase since solving their actual problem takes too big of an effort.

Even if you don't care about the porn, you should at least be a bit concerned about the message this is sending. And it's important to make a big enough fuss over this so no other websites decides to do the same thing.

But that's not why they're doing it.

And even if it were, Tumblr has already permanent safe search filter on so it's impossible to access blogs with "adult content" if you're under 18.

I think we a bit overreacting here..fearing if the other website will do the same? I hardly doubt it, especially if these alternative website are solely for fan-service. Or better yet, just google search "porn".

Or you know, use google instead of wasting money on something you'll throw out in less than a week.

Exactly. Although I would disagree about the magazines having no value. I'm not into porn magazines but I do know some people who don't mind wasting money to get these magazines especially  if they are "collector edition" like playboy's for example.

Any source on that tumblr is swarmed by CP?

TBH? Every website should be allowed to decide themselves what they allow and what they don't.

Granted, but it's still a major dickmove to remove all adult content because it's easier than to actually put some effort in and fix the problems.

I feel like we're not on the same page here.

The issue isn't that they're removing porn,  it's that they do so because they can't be arsed to properly moderate the content in question.

And I'm a bit worried that if people don't voice their dislike for this kind of behavior, other websites will realize that they also don't need to properly moderate their content and that should they ever run into a problem as a result, they can just remove anything vaguely related to said content and call it a day.

Staff at Derpibooru is leading a mass undertaking of users to help archive art both SFW and NSFW from Tumblr before a lot of it vanishes forever. I'm actually trying to help them out myself. If you are over there, the link to that particular thread is here. It will include instructions on how you can help.

https://derpibooru.org/uppers/tumblr-nsfw-upload-thread
Just mainly pony related art by the way.

People can voice their disapproval or whatnot. But I'm saying the ideal of porn or other adult content like violence being wipe off in the face of the web is a bit far fetch... again, it just one website. People can be creative in finding porn/violence elsewhere.

Right, but again I'm not worried that this will lead to some sort of purge of adult content of the internet. I'm worried that if people take this lying down, then other people will adopt a similar style of moderating.

TBH, there is always a risk left no matter how good you moderate.

Even with removing every porn content there is still some risk leftover, albeit less obviously.

I'm sorry, but what is your point? I'm aware that Tumblr isn't gonna be able to remove 100% of the porn posted there, that's not the issue.

Because it might be better for them risk-wise to have just 1% child porn instead of 5%.

Right, I agree. But that doesn't make this ban any better.

I am just saying it makes sense from a risk-factoring business standpoint.

It really doesn't. Like, if they can't ban child porn properly on it's own (which would be weird since seemingly every other website is capable of it), then why would they have a bigger success rate by removing porn in its entirety?

Edge-Cases would be my one guess, the other that software might be more easily able to distinguish from porn/non-porn than from porn/cp.

If you aren't already aware, the software tumblr uses is hilariously bad at distinguishing what's porn and what isn't, which has led to a lot of sfw fanart and such to get flagged. In fact, IIRC it even flagged the post in which the Tumblr staff announced this ban as nsfw.

Right, but again no other website seems to have that issue.

Maybe that is the reason why they are doing it? Easier to ban all porn than have to flag it maybe? Not to mention you get the "privilege" to ban everyone who posts NSFW, protecting the system.

How do you know about those (like 98% of the web) that don't allow NSFW/porn content?

No, they're doing it because Apple kicked them off from the app store due to their childporn issues and this is the easiest way of solving it.

How are you gonna ban a type of content without flagging it?  Have users manually go and report every posts?

Let me correct myself, every other site that allows on to host adult content don't seem to have that problem.  So why can't Tumblr do the same?

I am pretty sure the average adult or even best adult site doesn't have an app in the iOS store.

Maybe not, but sites like Reddit do. And Reddit hosts adult content.

Also, not relevant in the slightest.

It is IMHO, because to my knowledge the whole tumblr things started to go off after the app was banned.

It wont happen, believe me. Otherwise it would be a miracle from God to wipe out violence/porn.  I'm sure there are other website who appreciated  fan services like DA.
