I think what people are really mad about is that sites like Tumblr are pretty safe from viruses and whatnot so unlike a lot of existing porn sites people didn't have to worry about infecting their devices because they wanted to check out the adult content. Whether it's for the porn itself or simply for the art (because let's face it, porn artists are extremely talented) Tumblr was a well-known, familiar place where artists could get their stuff out there without endangering their fanbase.

That is indeed a big part of it. Tumblr's press release mentions "alternatives", but are there really any on par with Tumblr and how much safer it is to browse there than say 4chan? Or any site that allows you to seamlessly switch from adult content to art, comics, fanfics, blogs, gif compilations, etc without having to change sites? Compared to others, Tumblr is top notch, and now people are being told to step away for an inferior and more risky experience.

Honestly, the only time I've regularly used Tumblr was for a user feed who actively posts adult pictures that I best not specified here. However a few years ago, that particular source of adult pictures disappeared from Tumblr, and I simply stopped going onto Tumblr altogether.

I dont want to be that pony..person...entity...but, ever since I started mucking about on tumblr in 2011 I instantly noticed how many NSFW blogs there were for just ONE NICHE thing. For every niche thing there was at least 20 blogs about it. Tumblr recommended other blogs to follow based on your current ones. Two blog follows later, im recommended an NSFW blog. How does Cars and Metal get me this?

Pretty soon I hear tumblr in my classes and in the courtyard of the campus. "Follow my tumblr!" they would holler, "I write about that there."
I soon noticed Tumblr was also being used for other things besides NSFW things and fandoms. It was also being used by "professional bloggers".
It was also being used to spread hate, bigotry, and lies under the guise of truth and freedom of speech.

Its hard to say what Tumblr is trying to accomplish. On the one hand, I thin theyre trying to become more professional....but its tumblr. They get hurt over any little thing. Case in point this hilarious video.
On the other hand, a lot of those NSFW pictures are posted without the other party's consent. So Tumblr could be making a really smart move and avoiding lawsuits.

To me, I think that's a reasonable move to completely make sure young Tumblr viewers do not see explicit content by accident as it is widely used by many. Even with the Safe Mode function on it may not completely protect them from accessing Tumblrs they shouldn't be on until they're adults. Even parents have to make sure their kids are completely safe when browsing the Internet as it can be a dangerous place when safety measures aren't enabled.

If parents have an issue with this, there are already lots of solutions to the problem. You don't see HBO being held accountable if a kid switches their station on at the wrong moment. And you would think by now that they could have AI figure out what is or isn't explicit.

But still... this feels like that typical mentality of where even the finite chance of a snafu has to be prevented, like all halloween candy being checked before eating (even though all such incidents involve poisoning by a family member in the same house) or all buses having to stop at tracks after one incident with a train. This fear has trickled all the way down to redefining what childhood is, with the elimination of unsupervised ANYTHING. Parents don't even have a choice a lot of the time. Kid playing in the yard without a parent watching? "Helpful" neighbor calls the cops and accuses you of neglect, when just two decades ago kids could go on adventures in the woods alone without causing a shred of anxiety. The loudest argument against genderless public bathrooms is child safety. Sorry... bit of a tangent rant. But our desire for 'security' is definitely out of control right now.

There's something unsettling about a battle like this happening so late in Tumblr's lifespan. Starbucks just started blocking Pornhub last week, and for them that's kind of shocking.

Are we seeing the start of a massive censorship movement? Frack I hope not. I don't use Tumblr, I don't even care about porn, and this still ticks me off.

The fact that net neutrality is gone and Article 13 is on the verge of being passed doesn't help either. We are one step closer towards having a totally stripped down internet. On top of that, artistic creativity will be severely limited. I tell you, when the 2020s come along, the internet will be completely different, and in the worst possible way.

This is why we need to push for a decentralized web now more than ever, so we can escape from the overregulation from governments and corporations.

While my Tumblr blog is SFW, i do follow a few NSFW blogs. From what i understand, this started from a goal to rid the site of a child pornography issue that's been going around there. While this is completely understandable, straight up nuking the site of all adult content is the wrong way to go about solving things.

I don't think I ever got any viruses in the recent years and Tumblr just isn't part of my daily routine. I suppose that they will trim down their traffic to some extent.

Gosh... I can't remember the name of it anymore and I think it was over ten years ago, and I can't even be sure which nation was doing it anymore. It involved an attempt to give even more teeth to something like the DMCA, nearly giving corporations carte blanche to take down anything that they deemed to be piracy or copyright infringement, along with an insanely broad-stroked definition of "illegal content" that would allow the government to block whatever they felt like (this is before net neutrality was even a catchphrase). But this thing was branded as something like the "Protecting Children from Sexual Predators Act" on the basis that child porn would be one small facet of what took a hit from the legal changes. Essentially it was so named so that anyone would be terrified of voting against it. Pretty sure it didn't get passed though because it didn't fool ANYONE.

Why should I care?Oh because I don't.  Porn lovers act like the world is gonna end just because one stinkin media shut down the party. Buy yourself some magazines like the old fashion way.

Or you know, use google instead of wasting money on something you'll throw out in less than a week.

It's true that sometimes we may face these drastic changes in our lives, but no matter what we must remain strong together as there's always an alternative solution to the problem that can make both sides happy.

Except the site isn't meant for kids. It's restricted to 13+, and the irony is there will still be porn bot accounts that tumblr has not and will not do anything about.

A couple comics I read work out of Tumblr and are now moving their archives elsewhere thanks to this. Some NSFW, some not. Looks like they're gonna be losing a ton of traffic from both adult and safe content on a long term basis.

I remember I used to have a Tumblr blog used for sharing screenshots from a game I played a lot back then, and a bug I encountered a lot was my posts would automatically get marked as NSFW even though what I played is as E-rated as it can get. Some other bloggers did the same thing as I did and they had no problem, it was just me who always had their posts marked NSFW and could only be seen when SafeSearch was disabled.

With SafeSearch being completely on at all times I can see much more technical problems that'll happen out of this than where it's at right now. And I heard that these bugs are starting to show up too because even SFW images are getting flagged.

Okay Tumblr has officially managed to become worse than Reddit. Seriously? Did the soccer mom philosophy get to them? This is a moronic move on their part that will reduce the traffic to their site while simultaneously making it permanently associated with catering to the worst of the easily offended.

Because Tumblr is gonna fuck over a large portion of their userbase since solving their actual problem takes too big of an effort.

Even if you don't care about the porn, you should at least be a bit concerned about the message this is sending. And it's important to make a big enough fuss over this so no other websites decides to do the same thing.

But that's not why they're doing it.

And even if it were, Tumblr has already permanent safe search filter on so it's impossible to access blogs with "adult content" if you're under 18.

It's about money(aka control)...no doubt about it.

The regulation of the internet is a slippery slope - we need regulation to keep it 'free' and we need it to keep it 'safe'. Years ago I though the 'self-regulation' work pretty well. There were some very simple things one can do to protect their privacy and their computer. But now, privacy and safety is pretty much impossible - and that's not because of 'bad guys' but because of the big corporate entities that do control the web and its content.

This 'change' is no doubt just more muscle flexing by Big Tech. The worst nightmares of Anonymous have long been swirling out of control...

'the man' controls the web and ALL of its content.

They say jump and you say how high - they got rich off of it, and now they control you.

The problem is that these viewers would easily find a way around it by disabling it on their account.

1) You can't disable it. 2) Then that's the kids fault 3) Again, they aren't doing this to prevent kids from seeing porn. They're doing this because it's easier for them to remove all adult content than actually solving their childporn issue.

And the porn bot accounts which as I said have been an issue for the better part of a year and Tumblr did nothing about, and will continue to do so. After the ban porn bots will continue to stick around while Tumblr continues to stick it's head up its ass and do nothing about. Meanwhile hate speech, homophobia, racism etc continues to stick and they rather target harmless NSFW blogs that also tag their stuff. I expect Tumblr to be shut down by the end of next year.
