Medieval Fantasy Army

If you were the noble ruler of a medieval fantasy kingdom, what would your army be? Or, if you were an evil overlord of a medieval fantasy empire or horde, what would your army be?

If I were a good king, my army would consist of well trained men-at-arms, peasant conscripts recruited from the strongest men in the villages, well trained knights, skilled mages, resourceful rangers, elf, dwarf, giant, half-giant, fairy, pixie, and gnome allies, dragons, griffons, hippogriffs, pegasi, centaurs, satyrs, crafty siege engineers and cannon crews, powerful siege engines and bombards, and several bands of mercenaries from other nations.

If I were an evil overlord, my army would consist of ruthless knights, ruthless men-at-arms serving as shock troops, peasant conscripts with training and equipment ranging from poor to fairly practical serving as rank-and-file troops (the fairly-well trained conscripts) and as cannon fodder (a bit of both fairly-well trained and not-so-well-trained conscripts), fearsome and notorious warlords and their mercenary companies and barbarian hordes, payed bandits and pirates who raid enemy supply lines and trade routes for supplies, deadly assassins, goblin troops serving as rank-and-file among the human conscripts, hobgoblin shock troops, trolls, ogres, giants, half-giants, cyclopes, dark elves, evil dwarves, dark gnomes, dark fairies, dragons, griffons, hippogriffs, centaurs, satyrs, minotaurs, siege engineers and cannon crews, powerful siege engines and bombards, arcane weaponry, monsters created by my Imperial alchemists, and the armies of puppet states under my command.

They would likely be some form of clones or unintelligent creatures that serve me. My main would be assassins to do the majority of the dirty work without fighting a war.

I'd aim for uniformity with some mobile heavy defense units such as armored caravans that would form a barrier around some trebuchets. I'd also try to implement some more modern tactics like Napoleon's corps strategy, along with maintaining some classic phalanx formations.

Hmm... Probably the usual units, like swordsmen, mounted close combat and ranged units, archers, ballistas, catapults, trebuchets etc. with the additional armies of pegasi, dragons, wyverns, drakes, unicorns, alicorns, skeletons, changelings, giants, griffons, wizards, sorcerers, assassins, sirens, hydras, dwarfs, gnomes, basilisks, phoenixes, leviathans etc.

The foundation for my spin on the traditional dark forces would look something like this:

Dark elves can cater to all of dark lord's needs and ambitions without being robbed of their elven functionality and elegance. They spit in the face of old-fashioned high fantasy where evil gets the uglies with cockney accent. Serving as sharpshooters, shadow dancers, and black mages, they would be in charge of assassination and espionage. On the battlefield, they would be sent after high priority targets such as heroes, mages, artillery, and castle defenses.

Psoglavs are way better at carnage than orcs, plus they are an actual mythical creature and not something that everyone borrows from Tolkien. Savage and expendable, they would be the main force that could chew through just about any army of humanoids, including giants. They'd also be in charge of managing siege machinery, though they'd usually have dark elf supervisors.

And for the air force I'd have sirens aka harpies with benefits. They're not the toughest fighters but their sentient nature, siren song, and nimble forms make them very versatile. Good scouts, good couriers, good harassers, good air support.

Of course, I can't go without dragons and wyrms. They would serve as strategic weapons for when you absolutely, positively need to bring down that fortress or defend your own. Their lesser kindred like tatzelwurms (the original variant) and lindwurms would serve as a sort of heavy cavalry.

So then, whose gonna be in charge of magic?

The dark lord, of course. And my lieutenants. That's for magic of mass destruction.

Dark elves would have black magic specialists who had forsaken tools of assassins in favor of magical tomes. But make no mistake: an elven assassin is still more of a mage than most fighters.

There'd probably be some secret cult of witches who'd worship me hiding among the dirty villagers. At dark nights, they'd lotion themselves with ointments made out herbs and dormouse fat, and then they'd fly on their brooms high as a kite. They'd be the ones responsible for poisoning your army's food and water, assisting dark elf assassins, and even governing your fiefs form the shadows.

Someone's going to rat out the collaborators in my fiefdoms, eventually. (Hopefully, they won't have to restort to extreme measures to get them out).

Any warlords in your army?

Necromancy is such a cost-effective staple it would be a shame not to use it.

One could say that psoglavs have warlords and raiders. Sirens/harpies also make for better brigands and corsairs than those more human-like things.

So no, there are no actual warlords, bandits, or pirates serving in the dark forces, but those who do serve can do anything they can do.
