Why do people hate hipsters?

Have you ever noticed that a lot of people harbor a hatred (or, at least, dislike) for hipsters? Why is that, anyway?

Because a lot of hipsters believe that they're better. The same thing happens with punks, goths, and any group of people rebelling/"rebelling" against the grain. I haven't forgotten about "not all", I'm just saying.

Ha! We meet again, my friend! And as usual, your arguments are tuned with my thoughts, but better phrased.

However, since people might have a bit of a hard time understanding what you just said, I'll proceed to express it with a less sophisticated (if not crass) language.

People hate hipsters because hipsters act like if they were the hottest crap in the toilet. They follow all those pseudo-altruist trends just to feel superior for "being the better person". Supposedly openminded, they shall judge on others who don't do as they do. Pseudo-intellectual, supposedly anti-capitalist swines who are merely fashionistas of the anti-fashion, resulting into anti-fashion fashion (missing the whole point). They also tend to brag on superior intellect and being tech savvy, which is rather laughable given how little they know on scientific principles on everything they use or oppose to and how they have preference on known brands over lesser known brands with higher specs and lower prices (the iMoron phenomena, I dub it).

Just think about it, they call "organic" to all their chem free, traditional produced edible products ignoring organic actually refers to the chemical composition and properties of substances. Hell, if it has carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen then it's most likely organic by the CORRECT meaning of the word. And then they go with their vegan bullshit. It is known by botanists and biotechnologists nowadays that plants send electric signals when being cut, and some even produce ultrasonic waves. Roughly said, they feel pain and scream, just in a way we don't really understand up to this point. So, shouldn't vegans eat dirt and rocks instead? Or plants are not suffering disregard their response?

And I could go on for pages and pages on why we despise hipsters, but I think it would be pointless given the rest of the things about their hipocricy that irritates people can be figured out simply by hanging with one for a couple hours.

I don't like hipsters for one simple reason: They attach themselves to certain things solely because of them not being popular, which makes their "love" for those things completely artificial and usually not fueled by real passion. Like the mainstream crowds they wish to avoid, they tend to go towards something not as popular for a little while and then jump to something else once that runs its course.

Obviously not everything is hipster bait and there are a lot of non-mainstream things that I gravitate towards (my music tastes being the best example), but I have a deep passion for the stuff I like, like music. As long as people aren't into something solely based on it not being mainstream, then that's cool with me. If someone checks something out because of its non-mainstream status and ends up legit loving it, then that is neato burrito as well.

My step dad calls me a hipster. I have a beard, I like classic plaid (only own two shirts though), I'm progressive, into geek culture I guess, but I also have a strong dislike for most modern styles, have a diet that most lines up with a child's but isn't confined to any restrictions, I have a few very old fashioned viewpoints. No one else would think I'm one.

People like to find other people to hate. You like records and buy a record player? you're a "pretentious" hipster. You're vegan?  some people will be indignant and have an attitude like"oh you think you're better than me"? 

Yes, there are annoying and actually pretentious people out there, but often I feel like people use the term "hipster" pretty loosely, often insecure people might be offended just by someone having different opinions or tastes from them.

It depends on how the person acts I think. For example, if someone is a vegan, there is no problem. But if someone is a vegan and acts like the stereotypical vegan (has to say that they are vegan frequently, criticizes others for eating meat) that can be annoying. You can say that you are vegan if we are planning to go eat somewhere (because this will affect where we are going to go) and such or if someone asks. However, if you come into the office, see me eating a pizza with meat on it and start lecturing how eating meat is bad, understand that this is really annoying (and you won't get me to stop eating meat anyway).

Same with records and other old things. I like old technology, I use records, tapes, drive an old car etc. However, I try to not get into people's faces with it. For example, I have an old radio receiver in the office and use it to listen to music. If someone notices it and asks me about it, I will talk, however, I am not going to tell everyone who comes into my office "look what cool receiver I have, I only listen to music on vacuum tube devices, because they give the best sound quality, no transistor device can even begin to reach any tube device", because that would be annoying and not really true. 

If someone starts saying "I only listen to records, because they have the highest sound quality", but they actually listen to them on a Crosley record player with built-in speakers, then I know that the records do not sound that good for him and he is using that only as a way to pretend that he is better than me.

Same with cars - you want to drive a brand new car? Good for you. I prefer older and simpler cars, so I drive those, however, I am not going to say "I drive an old car" to everyone I meet, only if we talk about cars, someone asks, or someone complains about a problem with some part of their car, and my car does not even have that part, I may say something.

I also have an old cell phone, I only tell people about it if they ask or if they say that I should get some app and such (in that case I pull out my phone and ask if the app would run on it).

So, if you like the thing for the thing itself and would like it even if you were not allowed to tell anyone about it, that's awesome. If you "like" it only to be able to tell everyone that you like it and feel superior about it, then you are annoying.

TL;DR: You can like whatever, just do not get into people's faces with it.
