Quote

2K Games has announced that it’ll sell the next-gen PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the upcoming NBA 2K21 for $69.99, a $10 increase to the current-gen Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game. And it’s the first indication that the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 may be bringing a price increase from the standard $60 that major video games have been sold at for years when they arrive this fall.

Most video games have been sold at a $60 price since the “seventh-gen” console era of the Xbox 360, the PlayStation 3, and the Nintendo Wii, which was a $10 price increase from the $50 standard that had preceded it. But if NBA 2K21 is any indication, that $60 era is about to be over: assuming other game studios follow 2K Games’ lead here, the PS5 and Xbox Series X could see $70 games become the new norm for AAA titles.

This might set a new trend of games costing $70. AAA developers might charge more for games that have less content so they can cram them with microtransactions, because that's how the industry works now; they try to see how much they can get away with. At what point do gamers say, "Enough is enough."?

You might say I'm jumping to conclusions or overreacting, but the game industry has done nothing to deserve the benefit of the doubt in recent years. I fully expect games to cost $70 next gen.

Any digital download game should be much less worth than physical copies. Increasing the value of a game just because it comes to the next gen of console, especially when it is only digital download (basically, you don't even get to hold the game in your hands, and when the service you bought it from shuts down, so does your games), is bad.

Of course it’s a fucking sports game that kickstarts this

And not just any sports game. A sports game in a series that featured casinos in its latest entry.

Don't ever let anyone tell Nintendo or they'll start charging $70 for Pokemon games, Wii U ports, HD remasters, and 2D games.

The reason this could happen, that video games would suddenly cost $10 more than they did previously, is because of supply and demand. Gaming is an increasingly popular hobby (more info), so the supply and demand for video games is increasing as well, which increases prices.

Regardless, I'm still disappointed and annoyed that gaming companies would charge more for video games. Yes, it's a new generation of gaming and it costs a ton of money to make and distribute video game merchandise, accessories, and hardware, but that does not make it any less irritating. I'm hoping that there will still be free games released, like Fortnite and Warframe, to balance the cost for gaming.

And this is why I f***ing hate 2K. They are greedy f***s on the level of EA. The only games I'm really willing to buy that they publish are the Borderlands games pretty much.

Didn't help they also f***ed with BL3 by making it an Epic Games exclusive for half a year.

Surprised, I am not. Supply and demand, games are naturally costing more and more money to produce for big titles. I don't play AAA games very generally anyways, so this is easy for me to swallow, especially since this is something I already read about way back in 2017.

lol 70 dollars for a video game? fuck outta here with that. 60 is insane as it is but if people are willing to pay 70 they'll just keep going up and up. Some people may pay that much, but not me, not ever.

The supply of copies of a game is infinite. This is not the same as some physical object where you have a limited amount of it. A new copy can be created for free and there is no maximum limit of copies (like there is a fixed amount of, say, oil in the ground).

So, no. Increasing the price AND having microtransactions is greed, pure and simple.

As if gaming companies didn't already try to make all the money in the world with all the microtransactions and garbage, now they're putting an arbitrary price hike on it? There is literally no reason for them to increase the price like this just other than to try and gouge more money out of their customers with less effort and work. I bet you anything they'll still try and sell "Complete" or "Ultimate" editions for +$100 anyway too...

I mean, just look at the indie scene, who have shown repeatedly that they can make games far better than a lot of AAA publishers for far less money.

I remember how I started with gaming when I was young. There was this wide-spread method of gaining games due to lack of appropriate app protection. 70 bucks for an AAA game? I know very well what I would do if that was the case and I would feel no shame over it.

AAA devs: Keep increasing their prices in spite of literally sleeping on money.

Been there, done it. A LOT in the past. If situation ever forces me due to scummy practices, I can always return there. Not for indie devs obviously, but I couldn't care less about Triple-A market which has proven time and time now that with giant teams of talented people, nearly endless supply of money and years to polish their games they cannot come up with anything that would not be an absolute crap 97% of the time.

AAA Games cost that much when I was a teenager, and if the prices kept up with inflation they should cost over $100 USD today.

The way they try to keep behind inflation is creative new income strategies like day-after-release patches, paid DLC, free-to-play and other strategies to avoid a sales strategy that in some ways is outmoded.

Back in my day they were worth $20 :stressed:!! We’re getting a lot more game content, at least?

Also on top of the game nowadays so much DLC stuff for extra...

*looks at Pokemon Lets Go Pikachu/Eevee* Nope. No we are not. Granted that is an extreme example, but it is there.

Would be okay with $70 for high end titles if they weren't also filled to the brim with the greediest shit imaginable in this industry. 2K has absolutely no place in trying to justify this kind of price increase. Their games are essentially free to play mobile games that charge at least $60 up front every year. Just look at the pre order bonuses. All of them are for the "MyTeam", with maybe one thing not being for that mode. So for $60, you get a game and a bunch of worthless, virtual currency which is only being given to you for free to hook you into buying more. This piece of trash company is trying to justify $70 for their games? F**k off and die 2K, along with Activision, Ubisoft, EA, Bethesda and Konami. Hilarious how the richest gaming corporations on the planet are the ones constantly acting like they always need more. "So sorry, we giant corporations that are worth BILLIONS of dollars don't get enough money, we need to charge more because we need more capitalism please. Feel sorry for us."

I already have to pay CAD$80 including taxes for their games, I don't want to pay more than that, that's already too much!!

I already paid $60 for Animal Crossing and I have to say, the whole price was not worth it due to not having free internet access on the game. They should go back to the 30-40 dollar price.

I already think, that the games are way too expensive, at least for polish currency.

A single AAA title costs about as much as somewhat decent (smaller) hardware than can serve you for years, so it kinda hurts to buy something that will hopefully entertain you for 3-15 hours instead. These AAA games are often bugged, cheesy (copy&paste but with different maps and story), involve tons of pointless, cheap, quickly made DLC's at nearly the same price as the base game and the devs rarely provide any real support. Not gonna lie and it's not a mystery, most of AAA studios don't care about their players, there were enough of dramas lately, I don't think they deserve any more money, they already ask for too much for what they offer.

Game prices are absolutely despicable.  I mean, why does a AAA movie cost a third of what a AAA game does?  You're telling me that games cost more to make than LOTR or f*ckin Avengers Endgame or whatever?  No way, man.  I only buy games when they're on super sale on GOG or Steam.  50% off at least or I won't touch a AAA title.
