None of the crew members were close enough to hear them, so they could speak openly.

The voice grew a bit smug, "Indeed, you don't know what you're dealing with. It's surprising though how quickly you lot were cowed, some of your number walk into a trap and suddenly the rest don't want to fight? You wouldn't last a day against the rebels."

The voice was a bit more intrigued at the offer of trade, "Perhaps, I've yet to see anything of value you could possibly offer us in exchange, but perhaps we could be surprised. Speaking of the crown, you seem to fear what your ruler would do, if they are so powerful as to make you fearful, why are they not here in your place?"

Eventually Sweetie Belle had walked away and then went to inform the captain of what was spoken about. The guard who had convinced the others to break the captain's orders was named Stern Steel, and she also told him about the names of the guards. She told them one of the guards named Snapshot had a really unusual disposition and didn't really seem to care about what was going on, the two mares were regretful of their choice to go against their orders but Stern Steel was truly a loose cannon with no regard for the safety of anyone and was allegedly only let in because the others pitied him. Something like that.

There was a long cut off after the Smugness but Afterglow had replied about half a minute later. He was growing irritated with this type of personality, but refused to show it. "Well if you are going to act like that, then I may as well no longer consider the option. Smugness isn't going to make this situation better for you. Keep that in mind." a bit of irritation was heard in Afterglow's voice, with a harsh, annoyed undertone.

Once Sweetie had finished relaying the info to the Captain he nodded, "Best if we return this Stern first, the rest will likely be model captives and keep the risk of fighting to a minimum." A voice spoke up from the Captain's wrist, "Captain, the guards are getting a bit... uppity. Permission to destroy one of their vehicles?"

"Denied, might be creatures inside, a sand dune should be impressive enough."

The Captain turned his attention to Sweetie, "Perhaps this might tempt you, were you to come with us, you'd need to go to the academy, where you'd learn just about everything you could want to know about what we know. If you do well, and your friends come along, upon graduation you would receive your own ship, and be free to do with it what you like. Do share that offer with your friends."

 

Outside

The smugness didn't fade, if anything it got more condescending, "You seem to forget who holds the chips here." One of the ship's weapons began to glow brighter, a hum filling the air before a massive burst of energy lanced out, unbelievably fast, to obliterate a nearby sand dune, hot sand falling all around the area, the dune now a shallow glassy crater. "We aren't in any danger here."

Sweetie raised an eyebrow and seemed to feel as if this captain was attempting to lure her into making a deal, or as if he had something up his sleeves. She seemed to back away at the offer, and the other one speaking of destroying one of the guard's vehicles was something she didn't like. She would stay fairly silent for a while before denying the offer, and going a step further. "I-I wish to leave." she'd say shakily as if she was defying what the others had expected or wanted of her. Sweetie seemed to be rather distressed.

Upon the impressive display of power from the ship, the guards would all look to each other in a quite bewildered fashion. Afterglow promptly would cut off all communications, and make a wing signal with his left wing. The guards began moving away as well as the equipment. Scootaloo was quite startled and was comforted by Preston star, the small filly holding on her tightly while Afterglow seemed to be quite enraged by this. The other guards dare not bring that up.

After moving away, Afterglow looked to the guards. "This is a lost cause. These beings have way more power than us, and display a great deal of arrogance, and any efforts by our part may result in the loss of live on this day. We will stay away. And if I catch any of you stepping out of line, I am stripping you of your rank on the spot. Is that clear? We have already seen what those four have gotten us into. I will not tolerate any further acts like that." he growled. The guards all nodded and didn't question him.

He would write a letter to Princess Luna describing what just happened, as well as the various details of weaponry he could see on the ship. He would also add that, should the materials requested not be enough to satisfy them, then he would have no further inkling to negotiate based on the personality he had just encountered over the translator. It would end up in a dead end, at least in his mind.

The captain sighed, seemingly disappointed more in himself than in Sweetie, "Regrettable, but understandable. You're young, and this is a major event in your life, no doubt you'd be more comfortable with your own kind. You've always been free to leave, just hold your [hoof] up to the door and it will let you through. Just don't let the captives out, you can head out the other side or the front without issue."

He turned to look at the screens, "If you change your mind before we leave, we'd be glad to have you still."

 

Outside

Afterglow received a letter soon after, "Unacceptable. We will be reevaluating your position in the guard once this situation is resolved, we need a captain skilled in both combat and diplomacy, and thou art apparently inept at both. We will be arriving shortly to assess the situation personally."

Their search for materials and a specialist should also be returning at that point.

Sweetie rose an eyebrow at that statement and seemed to ponder that statement. She looked over to the screens in the room, and then looked back to the captain. "Perhaps if you stop showing your tech off to those guards, then I would be more than happy to...stay. You do realize that this situation...scares others, and causes them to...be afraid or angered. Provoking them will only result in...unwanted things happening." she said, with a bit of a warning tone. She wasn't really happy with the way they just showed off their power by destroying a nearby sand dune.

Afterglow scowled at the letter he has received and wrote back: "I apologize for any shortcomings. We cannot exactly fight against something that can obliterate a sand dune in a fraction of a second, and we don't even know what else they may have. It is wise for us to not provoke, for we may start a war that may result in countless lives lost." 

Afterglow was getting rather annoyed by this situation. Mostly by Princess Luna. While he respected and admired her, he found these sorts of replies rather unfounded and unwarranted. Not that he would tell the others of course. Preston star pointed out the other guard carriages that had arrived. There were 2 guard carriages circling overhead, before landing nearby to where they were. The specialist was a grey Earth pony mare with glasses, she had a darker coat and her cutie mark was an inter crossing metallic arch shape over that of a stone. Her name? Arch Stone.

Arch Stone stepped off the carriage, guarded by two solar pegasus mares. She stepped forth with a confused expression. After a conversation with the guards she was brought up to date on the situation. Afterglow would then speak through the translator. "We have the materials you had requested. We hope it is enough to satisfy your demands, and we also have a knowledgeable one as well. I hope we can resolve this situation peacefully." he said, with emphasis on 'peacefully'.

The captain turned slowly back to face Sweetie, a look of confusion as well as a bit of intrigue. "You surprise me, with proper training you could prove to be a very shrewd negotiator or diplomat, a better one than [the slug] at least." He sighed, "You ought to understand, as fortified and armed as we are, we are the cornered animal here, out of our native element, injured, surrounded by the unknown, lashing out in fear. But you're right, no doubt those out there are just as scared of us, we're just as foreign to you as you are to us."

He got the notification that the materials had arrived, and spoke into his wrist, "I'll take over the negotiations from here [the slug], you've done enough damage already. You need to update the translator with the expert anyway so we can get the rest of what we need."

He went over to the mic, and motioned for Sweetie to join him, "Once we have the expert we'll be able to tell them the rest of the materials we need, we couldn't tell them earlier because you don't know what they are or what they're called. I think you'd be good at negotiating the trade."

Outside

The voice that spoke was different than the voice he had heard before, this one was confident, but agreeable, none of the smugness nor superiority that the other had had. "Bring the materials and the expert to the front, we'll bring the exchange captive there and open the door for you. We'll lower the shield so you can get through." 

True enough the shield turned off to allow them to enter.

Boarding

"Stern Steel, you're being released. Approach the door, all others stand away."

Once they complied the door would open to reveal the mantis, who would motion for Stern to leave the room, directing them to walk in front, the path revealed by the doors opening for them and closing behind them. If they cooperated they'd exit the ship without issue at the front to receive the expert and the raw materials.

Sweetie couldn't help but smile at the captain's agreement with her here. She felt that she had done something good with her words, in a way she enjoyed conversing with them and this time inside with these creatures has taught her a bit about conversing. She was sure she could learn more, and nodded. "I am glad that I have made this setting a more...negotiable outcome." she said with glee. "Perhaps you should meet with the captain of the guard, whoever they are. I'm sure that you two would...find some sort of common ground. Perhaps friendship." Sweetie said as she came over nearby to where the captain was, nearby to the mic.

Afterglow was quite pleased with the change of the voice. He figured it was a different individual for whatever reason, but he could not confirm this for sure. He smiled. "Excellent. We will be placing those you have captured under arrest, and they will be investigated at a later date. We hope the materials we have is enough to satisfy your needs." he spoke and motioned to Preston Star, Fly Heart, and two other stallion guards. They got into position around the expert and her materials and proceeded forward, past where the shield was. The guards were on high alert, with Fly Heart in the front.

-Boarding-

Stern Steel huffed and walked out, while the others were relieved that they weren't going to be harmed, and also that Stern Steel was out of the room now. The Expert would walk up to the doors with the guards, Arch Stone was very nervous. Afterglow would address Stern Steel while the Mantis was there. "Stern Steel you are under arrest for disobeying direct orders. Any further transgressions, and I will remove your rank. When all is said in done, I will have you investigated. Personally." he said sternly while the two mare guards with Afterglow would put him in cuffs and take him away.

The mantis would lead the expert over and up to the bridge where the Captain and Sweetie Belle were, "Here's their expert, she's not cute like the small ones." The mantis waved at Sweetie when she said that, before heading off.

The captain turned to nod at the expert, then looked over at Sweetie Belle, "She won't be able to understand me or the crew directly, so we'll need you to mediate, the translator should update now that we can glean her knowledge for what resources we couldn't ask for earlier. If she doesn't know of them... we'll have to assume they're unobtainable and try to work around them."

He'd turn to the expert, anticipating that Sweetie would relay the message as best as she could, "Greetings, hopefully you'll have the information we seek. In order to get ourselves off this planet we need a few things that Sweetie here doesn't know about or didn't know the words for. You may feel something strange, which Sweetie described as like a sponge, let us know if it becomes too uncomfortable or painful."

He'd give her a moment to pass the message along, then would list out the materials slowly, the words coming to Sweetie after a short delay. Things like titanium, gold, powerful magnet metals, and the like until they reached the final item, the translation becoming: Some sort of crystal capable of extreme resonance.

Once the list of advanced materials was relayed he concluded, "Once we have these things we will release the rest of the captives. You may go and relay the list."

 

Outside

The voice spoke again, "We're sending the expert out with a list of the rest of the materials we need, in exchange we'll release the remaining captives."

 

Meanwhile, Princess Luna arrived, flanked by a pair of her thestral guards, "Captain, Enlighten us of the situation, fully."

Arch Stone would enter the ship accompanied by the two mare guards. One was a pegasus, the other was a unicorn. The guards seemed stern, a little overly so but Arch Stone's nervous, yet knowing gaze was quite obvious to the others here. She walked with a slight limp, if any of them would care to look they would see a large scar on her front left hoof. A good time ago, she had been a victim of a falling boulder that fell directly onto her hoof. She would stand in a way that pressure was not put on it, as a habit.

Sweetie would relay upon what was stated, her eyes looking up to the older mare with wonder, she looked back at Sweetie with a confused expression at why such a filly would be among these other creatures, but the guards would notice Sweetie as the filly they saw in the bag earlier, but didn't bring that up. Upon Sweetie's explanation, Arch Stone would speak. "I will...errr, do my best accommodate what you need." she spoke in a simple way, then Sweetie would relay to the captain what was spoken.

Sweetie would explain the items, and Arch Stone would nod, and write them down on a clipboard she had. "The last one you speak of could be Quartz, or any form of crystal with...harmonic resonations. I would need to know the exact purposes such a crystal is used for. There are many different types, some strong, some weak. I might suggest a rare form of Obsidian-Quartz composite for the strongest. I have a chunk of it back at my home." she spoke in a humble manner.

Sweetie would relay what was spoken to the captain.

"Understood. We will do our best to do so." Afterglow stated as he saw Princess Luna arrive. The guards all bowed at her arrival, to which Afterglow would explain the current situation. It had thankfully been diffused, and they managed to negotiate one of the guards free, Stern Steel. The others would not be released until the minerals the occupants of the craft were received.

The Captain looked thoughtful, "The one we had was torn off the ship when we made our way down. It is likely some part of it could be found along the path we took, hopefully not having crashed into anything important. If you could find a shard of it you could use that to find another with similar properties. If you're unsure if it's correct, you can bring it back for the crew to verify."

 

Outside

She listened to Afterglow's summary of events, but it was clear she wasn't satisfied. She looked over to where Stern was being held when Afterglow mentioned that he had been released, "Perhaps this hasn't been a complete waste."

She went over to Stern, "Tell us, what didst thou see within the alien craft? Wert thou harmed?"

Sweetie would relay what was said to Arch Stone, who seemed to nervously look to the right and back to the captain. "I believe I have a scanning device that might be able to find such a tool, but given that...there is a wide area to search it may be extremely hard to find. I would like to know more about these shards of this crystal, what are their properties? Being able to withstand extreme pressure and harmonic vibration? What else?" she asked as she wrote down some notes. She needed to know as much as possible if she was going help.

Afterglow would nod silently as the guards watched the Princess go over to Stern Steel who looked to be rather annoyed, as he was handcuffed and being guarded over by two other guards nearby to one of the wagons. He would look up to her and grunt slightly. "Well, there are weird creatures in there like mantises, a metallic...mass that can absorb metal. Nothing like I'd ever seen, I tell you that! We were unharmed, and we were kept in some sort of holding area. The one known as...Sweetie Belle is still in there, it's as if she wants to be there!"

The captain shrugged, "It was experimental when we got it, so I can't tell you much more about it, it may not even work as intended, but it was supposed to allow for faster than light communication, something we hadn't been capable of before."

(The guards could understand that as an accidental admission that the aliens cannot call for reinforcements at the moment.)

 

Outside

Princess Luna's expression grew more grave, "Truly? Sweetie Belle? The one who was confirmed dead?" She'd look towards the captain for confirmation, "If this is indeed the case, then the situation is far more dire than we had supposed, these creatures are either powerful necromancers, or can somehow replace a pony, potentially bend them to their will..." She turned to the Captain, "In either case, we cannot trust that any creature emerging from that vessel has not been affected, any who come in contact may emerge enthralled. Though, this matter of a second Sweetie Belle troubles us greatly. Art thou absolutely certain that the filly is dead?"

Arch stone raise an eyebrow at the captain and Sweetie. "Then I would have to search a vast area with my limited supply of tools. Couldn't you scan the area yourself, if you have the ability to do so? Since that would take up a large amount of time for us to go out and search with our equipment. Provided we can have help, I would be willing to go look for any...fragments." she said, then Sweetie would translate for her.

Stern Steel scoffs and turned away rudely, the other guards would look at him harshly for doing that in front of the princess. "From what Stern Steel said, the filly is alive and well. Perhaps they did some strange technology on her to heal her from something. We found a dead chimera nearby so its possible they did some strange healing process on her despite there being a second dead body. If you wish to speak with an occupant of the vessel, you can speak through this." Afterglow hands the translator to Luna.

The captain looked thoughtful ,then spoke softly into his wrist, waiting for an answer before speaking again, "By our calculations, we could narrow it down to a cone no larger than a hectare in surface area. If you can provide us a map of the area we'd be happy to point out the exact area it might have fell as well as perhaps narrow that field further, but we'd need some of the materials we've asked for to repair our scanning systems."

 

Outside

Princess Luna did not look convinced, though she also didn't seem too upset at being dismissed by Stern, "We know of no manner by which a being can be healed and leave a dead body, save for truly abominable magics and sciences. We shudder to think what else these aliens might be capable of if they have sunk to such depths of depravity." She looked sidelong at the device Afterglow offered, "How didst thou acquire such a device? Was it scanned before thou used it? Or art thou too also potentially bewitched by these creatures?"

Arch Stone pulled out a geological and topographical map of the area. Various mineral deposits which may also include some of the materials they asked for. She smirked widely, and took a slight step back. "I always come prepared. Hopefully these should help you in your calculations. Take a look." Arch Stone states before she hands over the maps to him, and thought. "Perhaps, if you are versed in the art of alchemy I could suggest some measures. I have done experimental research on alchemy. Perhaps that may offer you solutions, or at the very least some benefits." she stated.

Afterglow gave Luna a puzzled look. "We have scanned everything we need, which is why we wear these protective suits. If you are afraid of being...bewitched, then you would have already been so. If it makes you feel better, you are free to scan this translator device again. It was given to me by the creatures onboard the craft so we could converse since they don't speak our language." he'd state, maintaining a calm and even personality while Fly Heart would come over with a scanning device as she had overheard, and scanned the area to see if anything harmful was about. Apparently not.

The captain looked slightly incredulous, "Alchemy? Like, turn things into other things?" He shook his head, "We don't have anything like that. We could rearrange things, provided they're organic or made of metal, but we can't do anything with crystal."

He took the map and held it up to get a good look at it, before drawing out some lines and circling some areas, "Here's the possible area where it would have landed, and the most probable places. I wish you luck in your search."

 

Outside

Princess Luna sighed, "Apologies Captain, we ought not to have spoken so harshly. Still, we must see this filly for ourselves, see if there is anything to fear, and perhaps better understand the situation we find ourselves in." She looked at the device but declined to pick it up, "Have any others entered the ship and emerged?"

Arch Stone would show the captain some written notes based on alchemy. It would involve various strange chemical reactions between compounds, and magical elements that the captain would be unfamilar with, such as spell casting, and crystalline grafting. Such things he's never seen before in all likely hood. "Thank you, you may take a look at that as we proceed to search the designated area." she said professionally, and if he had nothing else to say she and the guards with her would proceed to leave.

Afterglow turned to the ship's entrance. "As of yet, the mineral expert known as Arch Stone and two of my guards have headed into the ship. I sincerely hope nothing is up here, though. If they say it is safe, then I am heading in there. You are welcome to join me." he put the device back on and would ask over the device, "Everything alright in there? If it is, then I have one of our rulers here who might be wanting to see the interior of your vessel. Either way, I'd like to see for myself for what this all means, and speak to that filly you spoke of." 

Scootaloo all this time was gawking a bit at Princess Luna, she was having a bit of a fan girling moment upon seeing a princess before her eyes.

The captain only gave the papers a cursory glance before setting them aside, "Thank you, perhaps this will prove useful to us. Good luck on your hunt."

Once she and her guards left the captain sighed, slumping down in his chair, "Are all of your kind so... " he couldn't seem to find the word, "Like that? You and your friends don't seem like that, you three are curious, hopeful, brave, exactly what the galaxy is lacking right now, but she was so..." He shrugged, "Good work though, I'm impressed."

 

Outside

The smug voice was who responded, "We aren't a [expletive] tour service! We were gracious enough to allow those extra guards that we did not invite aboard. No. You may not come aboard, your ruler may no-" There was a pause, the voice shifted in tone dramatically, "You and your ruler may come aboard, alone."

Luna took notice of Scootaloo and was surprised, "What art thou doing here? This is a dangerous place for a pony so young as thou."

Sweetie thought for a minute, she thought his answer was interesting. "Well! Every pony is different, and unique. That's what cutie marks are, they represent our talent. You probably saw that that pony's cutie mark was an archway of steel, with a rock next to it. Those marks can tell you a lot about a pony, and one can inference a lot about a pony just by looking at their marks. I don't know what her name was, but her talent seems to be something to do with materials, so she was quite fitting in what she did...logical, precise, analytical." Sweetie mused. "And well, I'm trying to get mine." she looked to her blankflank.

-Outside-

Arch Stone and the two female guards exited the craft, having some conversation about what had just happened. She would look to Afterglow and only nodded slightly, indicating that she had gotten what she needed. She dare not interrupt the captain and the princess, and went over to the carriage she had arrived in and equipped some sort of scanning equipment and suited up. She wore a suit with a scanning like device on it that she could wave around, with a small screen on it so she could see anything of interest that showed up on the scan. She limited the parameters to anything crystalline, and proceeded to head to the area where she was informed to search. The two mares followed her, to aid her when she needed it.

Afterglow's eyes narrowed at what he heard across the translator, and the one on the other end heard a disappointed sigh from his end. "Alright. The other one I talked to seems most...unpleasant. I hope he can work on that." he said, as Scootaloo came infront of him.

"We saw the crash of this craft and were the first to arrive here, me, Apple Bloom, and Sweetie Belle, the three of us checked it out, and then it went black from there. We were told that a chimera of all things attacked us, and those creatures inside the craft healed Sweetie Belle somehow, and Apple Bloom is checking out the various mechanics of the ship! I just decided to come out here, since I wanted to look at all the cool guards here, and now you are here!" Scootaloo gawked somewhat, with a wide grin.

Afterglow couldn't help but smirk calmly at what was said. He found himself rather humbled by that.

The Captain listened as Sweetie spoke, "Rigid! That's the word. She and all of your kind out there are rigid, set in their view of the world and what they will and won't accept. You and your friends are flexible, open to new ideas, is that a consequence of receiving this mark? That you lose a sense of wonder and desire?"

He sighed, "The sooner we can get off this planet and back to the Federation, the better."

 

Outside

Princess Luna listened with a raised eyebrow to Scootaloo's explanation, turning to the captain, "So there are potentially five ponies on the ship, three guards and two fillies. Unless they prove especially hostile there is nothing to gain from being hostile towards them, they don't appear to have any means of moving their vessel. If this ship is in any way comparable to our airships, it was designed for maneuverability, the apparent weapons all face forward, if we move to the back of the ship, we should be mostly out of any danger from their weapons. Maybe then we'll have a more favorable bargaining position." 

She turned her attention back to Scootaloo, "Art thou certain of this? Wast anything... different about Sweetie Belle after these creatures healed her?"

Sweetie Belle pondered that answer before shrugging slightly. "Well, those are the guards and those who the guards asked to be here. They all have specific goals as guards, and they are very on edge with...what is going on. So that's why they are rigid I suppose...because they are afraid?" she asked before wondering more, "Well what planet are you from? This ship seems to have different ones from different planets. Could be? Or are you all from the same planet?"

He quirks an eyebrow at that suggestion. "That makes sense. We'll head behind the ship, then. If they were especially hostile we would be fighting them by now one would imagine. I hope the specialist can find what she needs so we can get ourselves out of this situation as quick as possible." with that, he and some of the guards began to walk around to the back of the ship, as well as Scootaloo.

"Well Sweetie seems to be...smarter? Like, she talks about stuff I don't understand." Scootaloo scratched her head slightly.

The captain listened more or less to Sweetie's explanation of the guards and their reactions, but his interest was far more piqued by her questions, turning to face her, "Well, there's quite a few names involved in answering your question, so I'll try and give you the meanings of the names rather than the names themselves. You are correct, each member of the crew is from a different planet, the Federation is a collection of many different worlds unified for peace in the galaxy. I am from a planet called Fertile Earth, which is a prosperous farm world. The grey clay one is from a planet that just has a numerical designation, I think #2113 or something like that. The name of their kind roughly translates to Engineer, as that is what their kind is best at. The green one, whose kind's name roughly translates to Energetic One, on account of the fact that they give off energy like living batteries, I don't know where he's from exactly. The mantis, whose kind's name is exactly that, mantis, her name roughly translates to Beautiful Warrior, she was a slave that we rescued, she doesn't know where or what her home world was called. The slug, similarly named, is from a planet known as Wonderful Swamp, since his kind likes humid places most. As to joining the Federation... that's certainly a possibility, and partly why I've been so interested in bringing you and your friends with us when we leave. The Federation discourages contact with civilizations and planets that haven't discovered FTL travel for themselves. However, they do allow the occasional civilization and planet to be 'uplifted' to that level when certain conditions are met. We'd take you, teach you all that we know, proving that your kind is capable of understanding the technology, then send you back to teach the rest of your kind."
