general media Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Confusion

Hello there.

This is a short topic because I want to ask what in the world is going on with the hate on The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power trailer. It does look promising as it more lore on The Lord of the Rings universe. Not only that, I look in the comment section and everyone is saying the same quote from this J.R.R. Tolkien guy. like they're reading a bible. Are they really THAT hurt over the new trailer? Is the history of the hate on the reveal of Equestria Girls repeating itself once more but in Lord of the Rings form? I need to know to get to the bottom of this.

I guess it's because they were expecting it to be at the level of the movies with Peter Jackson's touch. A bit too high of an expectation. However, the Hobbit trilogy was good but many has say that it wasn't great as the LOTR.  Since they were expecting to be at the same level as the LOTR trilogy. The trailer for The Power of the Rings does look a bit mid. Although we shouldn't judge the series just based on a single 2 mins trailer either. Nevertheless, I'm giving it a try since I enjoyed all the movies and the world itself. I'm sure those who are complaining about it might just end up watching it anyways.  As long I don't hear any whiners crying about "oh it ruined the years of nostalgia" blah blah.   I see people giving that kind of treatment toward the new SW trilogy- if you're gonna be bitter about it then don't watch it or troll the fandom who actually does like it. Simple as that.

I'm not confused in the slightest since I had a friend in real life who was a big fan of The Lord of the Rings and I was listening to commentary from a Lord of the Rings fan last year about how much effort fans of Tolkien's work have put into preserving the legacy and integrity of his work for a long time, long before "wokeness" was even a thought. There's even a group called The Tolkien Society that was dedicated to the preservation of said legacy and integrity and would hold conventions discussing the matter before it lost its way. Lord of the Rings is not like Harry Potter where the creator of that franchise allowed for some leeway on things in her books to be interpreted differently. It also doesn't even begin to compare to something like Equestria Girls, a franchise made by a corporation with the purpose of selling toys that is a spin-off of another franchise produced by a corporation with the purpose of selling toys like you mentioned. Lord of the Rings was written by a man who made clear that when he wrote something in his books, he meant it

There is no way this series, with its creator making it clear from the get-go that they're going to do things "their way", was not going to get people upset and cause conniptions.

The Rings of Power has very high expectations to fulfill, since The Lord of The Rings was very successful and had extremely well quality for many fans. Unfortunately, The Rings of Power will likely be unable to fulfill those expectations, since many modern-day sequels/prequels have before. There's a chance The Rings of Power will be a success, but it's a very low chance in my opinion.

I heard something about forced diversity, deviation from the source material, cheaply looking cgi and an absence of heart. Which results in this very fake, and plastic looking creation. Clean and sterile like the hobbit, apparently. There was also a beard involved somewhere, or the absence thereof.

Honestly, I don't even know what this is about. I didn't watch the trailer. There is only the lotr trilogy. Everything else, you can throw into the fires of mount doom.

Trailer looks very promising; if you ask me. I won't lie; I'm actually quite hyped for it! :D

Anyone that knows anything about LOTR knows that this is not LOTR. It's bootleg. One can't have LOTR without its own lore.

Something even the normies can understand:

Spoiler

P.S: You see, this is why Lovecraft is so awesome. You can pick up that public domain and slam the socialist so hard that it flies out of the property along its shit tastes. There is no mortal soul that can C&D our old gods and their horrific spawn. No matter how many woke takes you make, no matter how much you screech and moan, a damn Nick Cage movie will still be better. Perhaps the best thing for Tolkien at this point would be to cast his work into the public domain.

I'll give it a chance. Maybe it'll be fun. Maybe it'll be thought-provoking. But I won't treat it like it's all canon lore that Tolkien came up with. Because it's not. It's going to be full of changes from established lore. An alternate universe. Even the LOTR movies included changes (my boy Tom Bombadil was nowhere to be found, elven troops showed up at Helm's Deep, various subplots were omitted or altered, most of Return of the King's ending was omitted, etc.) and the Hobbit movies included enough additions to make three movies instead of one. That's just reality.

This comment nailed it.

Remember people, we're talking about a franchise with literally thousands of named characters, hundreds of different locations and settings, idiosyncratic cultures and even complete languages that were invented specifically for the world. Tolkien was meticulous in constructing his masterpieces, and for a massive company like Amazon to spend millions acquiring the rights to his work and then take a giant, steaming turd all over them to solve a problem that never really existed in the first place is a kick in the face to anyone who ever enjoyed his original material.

I will watch the show when it airs, but I am almost certain that I won't like it based on everything I've seen and heard so far. But hey, if that happens at least I'll still have the original books and movies, all of which are practically flawless.
