She instead merges with the Moon she was banished to and mutates into a LITERAL Nightmare Moon. blocking out the sun and the entire day-side of the Planet, brining about eternal night.

There will never be an omnipotent eye to look over equestria. The same way there is no omnipotent eye to look over our plane. He never returned. You have "yourself" and the inescapable gift of the  snake between your legs and your navel. In a way, you could say the serpent exists within all of you. And the nature of his struggle is eternal. Because he is eternal.
So, both equestrian ponies and human beings should stop trying to put their responsability on a messianic figure. It is the last time he gets nailed to a cross or becomes demonized just to give human animals the illusion of innocence and redemption. Own yourself already.
The flying serpent is not returning by any given name. But the family of the prince IS returning. In part because they never left.
So, maybe the fallen ones have an answer. The same way maybe the ones who fathered these alicorn freaks have an answer as well.
