What if MLP was rated TV-PG?

Same rating as Cartoon Network shows like Adventure Time and Regular Show. Meanwhile, MLP:FiM is rated TV-Y, which is pretty much the lowest age rating for TV out there. So what do you think they would've been able to show if it had a rating that's three levels higher?

Only if it meant Slice of Life reaching of Regular Show or KotH levels of writing giving way to some more absurd plots or being able to address more sensitive subjects.  “Darker and more violent” isn’t my idea of better writing

The thing for me is that MLP was good because it was different for a lot of others. It does not have the violence or mean humor many shows with TV PG have. All while still not talking down to its audience like most "kid" shows.

This tbh. The reason FiM is so engaging is that it understood that innocent doesn't mean patronizing or narrowly cutesy, which while most TV-Y fare struggles to escape from, is not required. Both TV-Y and PG shows can also hint at adult themes to keep us engaged, but if the underlying stories are too soft then mostly we're just not going to enjoy it as much (and older kids will similarly steer shy). Either way, ofc it still needs to be sparkles and unicorns :P

A TV-PG rating would allow ponies to say "kill" instead of "destroy". Not to mention Applejack's parents would be explicitly stated to be dead, with maybe even a flashback showing how they died.

Dark themes and violence CAN work if handled correctly. But in the case of MLP, it seems like they would just clash with the show's nature a little too much. If it means something like the villains actually killing ponies, it might be in poor taste.
