Well, nevermind. On the other hand, I'm not really all that surprised that some still dislike this episode, though probably not as much as they dislike "Mare Do Well" which I think could have been better to a small degree if Rainbow Dash's friends hadn't bragged about their contributions to Mare Do Well at Sugarcube Corner.

I feel like Mare-Do-Well was the biggest step toward making Rainbow Dash feel heaviy unlikeable for a lot of fans. As such I feel like it did some pretty major disservices.

Maybe for them, but for me, the methods of her friends were rather questionable at the very least, and as I stated before, I feel their actions would be even less questionable, to a small degree, if they hadn't bragged themselves.

1. The problem here is actually not the morale alone, it's also in the episode itself.

Wrong. There is no problem with the episode's "morale" (sic). It's true. "Truth is independent of our ability to understand it". The Pinkie Sense is real, even if Twilight doesn't understand how it works.

 

 

 

Twilight, taking the role of the person that wants to learn how this works. Yet somehow, she is actually punished for this(don't even try to argue that she would've suffered all that abuse if she didn't). That's strike one against the episode.

 

If you decide to find out how [your car] work, you can do so without having objects falling on your head, and you can actually find out how it works logically.

Twilight isn't being "punished" for anything. Derpy didn't intend to drop all those objects on her as a "punishment". Sometimes researchers perform experiments that have unintended negative consequences. Marie Curie died from the radiation of her own experiments. Nikola Tesla's experiments with electricity caused citywide blackouts, dead plants and animals, etc.

 

If I try to figure out how my car works and I injure myself, that isn't someone "punishing me" for seeking knowledge.

 

 

 

Secondly, it doesn't even portray the pursuit of knowledge right. "That can't be true and I'll prove it" is not how it works.

Yet, this hasn't prevented doofuses like Richard Dawkins, James Randi, Michael Shermer and Paul Kurtz from approaching "the supernatural/paranormal/weird things" with exactly that mindset, i.e. "that can't be true and I'll prove it". This episode is about Twilight learning to lose the "arrogant skeptic" attitude.

Plus that lesson had nothing to do with friendship, and by it's logic, just because you don't believe in the giant monster your brother says is living under your bed, doesn't mean it's not real. A better lesson would be something like 'being a good friend means respecting your friends beliefs'

Also, even tho the slapstick was funny, it was undeserved! Why do we like it when the cat gets hurt in Tom and Jerry? Cuz he's a jerk who's trying to kill the poor baby mouse! But what was Twilight's crime? She heard a ridiculous claim and then tried to test it. That's it. And what happened? She got really hurt. It was kinda cringe inducing because she didn't deserve it.

Whats more, pinkie knew Twilight was fallowing her, was constantly predicting pain that her friend was about to go threw, and she just let it happen. 'Yup an anvil's about to fall on her head! Great!' 'Oh, this ones gonna put her in a wheel chair! Fucking delightful!' Maybe she should, oh I don't know SAY SOMETHING!

It makes no since, is hard to watch, and has an awful take away value, that being: Don't question what people tell you, no matter what they say, how contradictory it is, or how unbelievably silly it sounds. Investigate no further because they are right. Use no critical thinking just accept the bullshit.

And oh boy the real world undertones. Ya, that. Alright dude who made this, you think being a 'skeptic' is bad. Good for you.

The good things about it

Now that's not to say there wasn't some good things about this episode, there was 1 good thing: insight to Twilight's chatterer. It showed how she can over react when she feels things are out of her control. Something we saw more of in lesson zero. It showed her brilliance and her need to make since of the world around her. It showed that when she doesn't understand something, she will pursue the truth until she finds it. And in the end, she found solid cause and effect proof to back up the validity of pinkie sense. Had she not so out-of-characterly  backed away from her research, she might have even discovered exactly why and how Pinkie sense works. Her Wanting to understand things will translate well into her future promotion into princesshood. Being a ruler who is logical and a good problem solver is extremely important. And her freak-out over lack of control gives her character some depth, and it sets up future story arks where she can focus on remaining cool in a bad situation, it really gives her something to grow from.

 

But the episode still sucked, thanks for reading.

You've got it all wrong. The claim wasn't ridiculous at all, because we can all see in the episode that Pinkie's predictions fulfill, so they are true. Ignoring the evidence which doesn't fit one's theory is not how Scientists should work, and that's what Twilight did, and she was rightfully punished for it. I wrote a detailed explanation of my point in this post (which for some time has been trimmed due to a bug, but it's back now).

Maybe she just knew that she couldn't stop Twilight from being a cynical jerk until she learns her lesson by herself? I would do the same, since I know how this Universe works. I can tell you all day long about how the Lichi fruit tastes, but you will know nothing about it until you taste it yourself. And in the same fashion: what a better way to show someone how the Pinkie Sense works than let her (Twilight, that is) experience it literally on her own skin? ;-J

Again, you've got it all wrong, and please read carefully my post mentioned above, where I explained how I understood the message of this episode. And it was nothing similar to what you've deduced. A true Scientist shouldn't deny something just because it sounds silly or unbelievably, because Science is not about beliefs or believability, but testability and experimental verification. Pinkie Sense, as shown in the episode, was a real phenomenon, with real evidence happening right before Twilight's eyes, and it could be experimentally verified (just not in a way Twilight tried to do it). But she didn't try much to study it ─ she tried to disprove it instead, because it contradicted her own personal beliefs. And this is not how Science works. It's not skepticism, as you call it here:

but plain cynicism. Skeptic wouldn't presume anything upfront, as Twilight did.

When Twilight gets hit by the door, and Spike comes out with those books, you can hear (not that loudly) that beeping sound that trucks make when they are going in reverse!

This is definitely a personal favourite season 1 episode of mine. I enjoy the slapstick as it reminds me of the classic Looney Tunes and I always end up laughing at the part where Pinkie introduces Gummy. Also, gotta love that scene when Twilight charges at the hydra just because Rainbow Dash would do it.

 

In terms of the moral, I agree that not being able to explain certain things doesn't make them false and we can choose whether or not we believe in something. I remember my confusion when I first read about the controversy surrounding this moral as I don't recall Twilight ever saying we have to believe.

Liked the episode, but Twilight's attempt at being skeptical just turned out to be cynism. After all you don't need to know HOW something works to know/belief that it works, just need good evidence that it does work and I think a 100% success rate is something worth considering. Though I understand her reluctance with just the first couple incidents.

Also if she wanted to test out the pinkie sense she should had spike or someone drop something above pinkie while she was blind folded (and ears covered probably). That would of at least tested out the falling object portion of it.

Oh, and my favorite part was also gummy in the bath tub with twilight. lol She flew out of the tub so fast... XD

I really like this episode. Only problem I have with it is the 2nd sentence of the moral, but I think that was more of a miswording rather than the actual intent. One of season one's best episodes imo and the backlash it received was ridiculous (if you want to hear a rebuttal to this episode's criticism I made a youtube video on it)

I honestly didn't like this episode. It was about Pinkie getting senses when something bad happens. Most of this episode centers around Twilight getting beaten and tormented repeatedly. This felt like a Twilight Sparkle Torture Porn.

Really, this episode really only fails due to the ending and moral- Twilight being a cynic who didn't want to accept something that clearly seemed to be true. Complete with stepping onto her own soapbox!

 

Polsky even said that this was about being stubborn about what you already know, and don't want to accept something because it sounds silly.

 

It falls apart because that doesn't mean you should take a leap of faith(especially since it makes no sense plotwise), nor should you just believe in things- without good reason.

 

 

Had Twilight been a good scientist in the episode, she wouldn't have been in it to prove Pinkie wrong- she would want to observe what evidence she could find instead.

One of the funniest episodes of the season, and also one of the best lessons of the show, which was sadly both terrible written and bad interpreted. This episode is also one of the most random episodes of the whole series, the Pinkie Sense, random objects falling on Twilight, the hydra, Celestia falling and taking the letter, etc. 
 
I loved Twilight in this episode, she was perfect, i loved seeing her trying to prove that she was right and failing, getting hurt a lot of times, and how funny she was, i laughed a lot of times.

Also the moral was great, just because you don't understand something doesn't mean it's not true, you should stop being sceptical and be open minded, an awesome lesson, but i didn't like how Twilight just gave up on trying to understand, she should just have given up on trying to prove that pinkie sense wasn't real, because it was so obvious that it was, but she could still try to explain it, that made the lesson seem like it was telling us to "don't bother trying to understand things"...
 
If it wasn't for the lesson this episode would deserve a 9.5/10, so i'm gonna give it a 9.2, a 9 is just too low...

I totally get how Twilight feels. I would never believe that, but if everything leads up to that, then you kind of feel obligated if everyone feels it too.

It has some pretty great randomness (Twilight following Pinkie in her explorer hat with jungle music XD), hilarious stuff falling out of the sky, etc.  BUT.

I like the open-mindedness part, but to me it came off as encouraging blind faith in things.  I feel like there was nothing wrong with Twilight's skepticism, it was more her delivery of criticism that was the part she needed to get over.  Giving up understanding something because you can't figure it out- that isn't a virtue at all!  It's important to have critical thinking about everything, especially if everyone else blindly accepts it.  But you should keep your doubt to yourself and be respectful of others' beliefs.  Imo, that should have been the lesson, not to just stop thinking.  Who knows, if Twilight had kept trying she might have proven that Pinkie's sense was scientifically real and discovered a whole new branch of magic.
