Post your unpopular opinions

There's some sort of message in every form of media. If you have no message, you have no content.

I beg to differ with your interpretation of the episode. It was made very clear why Starlight was running the equality village: she believes different cutie marks lead to different special talents,  which lead to some ponies having advantages and abilities other ponies don't, which leads to conflict and pain and potential disaster. Her vision and her reasons, which the village also shared, were repeated throughout the episode. Nobody had to come out and scream at us that the general concept of equality "had merit." It's the 21st century. That's self-evident.

Fluttershy approved of the idea and what she saw of the end result; Twilight initially wondered why they'd even been sent out there, because nothing seemed to be wrong. Unfortunately, many things were wrong. And while the writers seemed to take clear inspiration from the writings of George Orwell and the USSR, that doesn't mean they were falsely representing the entire concept of socialism or communism in order to tear it down. That's pure speculation. What they presented us with was a specific type of communal society that was poorly thought out, maintained via extreme measures, and had dishonesty at the top that made the whole system fundamentally unequal. Starlight failed for the reasons all villains on the show have failed: overconfidence, lack of integrity, and a flawed or absent understanding of friendship. The fact that her system had political elements does not make it, or her, a straw man.

The one thing I agree with you on is that the moral (not morale) was overly simplified. Double Diamond yelling "let's go get our cutie marks back" as soon as Starlight retreated, and the whole village stampeding to the vault to do just that--abandoning their whole worldview and lifestyle en masse--was completely unconvincing and a poor writing decision. To me it stood out as the only weak moment in the episode. Unfortunately, they needed it to happen so that Starlight could be caught and they would get their cutie marks back. I guess they didn't have any better ideas.

True about the messages, I just like subtly is all, or a fairer representation of the other side or balls to the wall satire.

I disagree about Starlight. I didn't see any evidence that Starlight actually believed in her own propaganda.  Also we never get an actual reason why someone would choose equality other than a vague "Starlight told me it causes problems and arguments" How about showing the evils of the other side? (though they very well could do this later on)

To me, the premiere didn't seem to be setting up a strawman argument against equality. They weren't sending the message that equality was a bad thing, and in the end the reason that the villagers stopped following Starlight Glimmer was because she wasn't equal with the rest of them. I personally think that they were all too equal, but one could also interpret it as them not being equal enough.

I guess I just would have like a better counterargument from the equalists, like anecdotes and counterarguments as to why equality may be something one chooses.  Show us someponies that used to live in a system that was rampant with inequality, where the few profited off the many and then the realization that in going to far in the other direction they have become like the ones they ran away from.

Finally I'd like to point out I liked the premier, this is a rather minor complaint about it from my point of view.

Sidenote: you both quoted me and I didn't get a notification. Anyone know what's up with that?

Off the "topic" of the season 5 debate being held in the middle of a 318-page long thread on unpopular opinions that I am sure has had debates in its 318 pages in the past, my "unpopular" opinion is that Americans are turning into zombies, literally, by the fast food/gmo/pharmacy/drugs/etc. that people ingest today.

-The season premier was nice. But,it wasn't worth the long wait.

-Starlight Glimmer is now my second favorite villain/antagonist. She would be my favorite,if it wasn't for Discord's antics.

-I dislike Double Diamond and the other ponies.

-I hate sitcom laugh tracks. They're sooooooooooooooo annoying.

I hate it when people say in a 90's related video "I was born in {2000-present} and I remember this"

Yeah, good for you, I'm sure a bunch of people that same age remember it too.

With that said, I also hate it when people say "ONLY 90s KIDS WILL REMEMBER THIS!" for similar reasons.

How?

5th edition was only made because people hated 4th and switched to Pathfinder. So Wotc wanted to go back to 3rd but had to make the rules incompatible. So it had to be the same but different. Why wouldn't a player just stick with 3.5 or Pathfinder?

How many times can they rehash the same basic game? I hate the advantage system. It is gimmicky.

I enjoyed watching Adventure Time and Regular Show before I came into contact with this show.

I like most unicorn stallions in the show, including Shining Armor, Prince Blueblood, King Sombra.

  • Drug use is the consumer's choice. It's a foolish choice, but still a consumer choice.

Shining Armor really isn't a good husband for throwing his wife at things.

Baseball is the true American sport.

Whoever made up the current college loan system should be arrested.

I actually like D&D 4th Edition. It's what got me into the whole tabletop scene in the first place and I absolutely love it. I think it's great for new players hoping to join tabletop gaming. Sure, it's simpler than 3.5 or Pathfinder, but I see that as a bit of a plus. Why overwhelm newcomers?

It also pisses me off that people bitch about 4th Edition sucking and continually say how great 3.5 is or shitting on people who play 4th Edition. Christ people, do you not want new players joining? Stop trying to make it your own secret club.

Pinkie Pie hasn't really been funny lately. Every since the second half of Season 2, she's turning from "Pinkie Pie" to "The Pink Energetic One."

Which is sad, because she used to be my favorite for a loooong time.

When has she ever been funny?

Oh the many times I could count.

Ah. I often feel weird about humor because most of it I don't find funny at all. I like Pinkie as a character, but I don't really get "humor".

I immensly dislike Sunset Shimmer. 2bland4me.

Rainbow Rocks was good, but it isn't "fantastic" or "amazing" like many people say.

Windows XP should've been discontinued like 3/4 years before it actually was.

Well, they haven't really built up her character. We don't really have a firm grasp on her personality, likes/dislikes etc., but one thing Rainbow Rocks did well was showing her ideas in what friendship should be.

Ageism is worse than racism.

How exactly? Does ageism cause violence against groups of people?

@@Midnight Gaze

I say ageism is worse, not in the sense that it has caused people to be killed or anything. Obviously, there haven't been child-only water fountains, or anything of that sort. I mean it in the sense that, based on common circumstance, actual racism barely occurs anymore. I mean racism as it was in the 60's, not some stupid white soccer mom trying to enforce a stereotype or something to that affect. Actual racism doesn't happen like it used to, which is good. It's also not to say that it doesn't exist either, but all in all, it's as much of a fad to be "racist" now as it is to call people "neckbeard," which leads me to - the internet! We are in the information age, where all over the world, about the most common "insult" if you'd like to call it that, is the word "kid." Perhaps I am being picky, but it's a very subtle thing anyway. I don't think every child, adolescent, or teen has some magical wisdom that is being downplayed by them being called "kid" in any condescending manner, but I do think it's wrong that near no one touches on ageism. I could probably explain it all better if I were more awake, and less lazy for the time being, but here you are.

I sometimes jokingly call My Little Pony "Rainbow Horses in My Possession". I mean seriously, the title has always been slightly weird if you think about it, but then you can't really think of anything better either.

Steven Universe is the best show in the Universe.  :D

In all honesty, I'm not a fan of the show.  There are episodes where it pulls you in and a I think "this will be good," and then it turns into a really weird slice of life episode.  What gets under my skin is the 11 to 15 min run time per episode.  I sincerely hope this won't become the new standard for cartoons where it's more "profitable" to make shorter cartoon episodes to crank out the product, ads, and what not.  I would never have gotten into MLPFIM if it were that stupid 11 to 15 min per episode idea.  Robot Chicken was fine to me when it did the short skit thing with the show being a total of X minutes since SMA takes quite a bit of effort to pull off.

In regards to unpopular opinions, I'm starting to get annoyed at some of the people in the fandom who just tell others -- using a stardard reply -- of "just don't watch the show then if you don't like it."

Primary example came with the post on EQD where a person vented, and received a not too warm welcome of "just stop watching the show" with one comment saying along the lines of "we need toilet paper overhere for the butthurt."

Thankfully, this won't disuade me from the brony fandom since these people make up a minority of them.  I was here since the last-half of the first season, and I ain't leaving until the show reaches its end.

*shrug* Whatever you say! I personally think that the Steven Universe writers are all the more skilled for being to fit lots of content into half the time available.

Attention everyone! After some internal staff discussion, this thread is now closed.

The factors behind this decision are manifold:

  • This topic is enormous, spanning over 300 pages. It's incredibly difficult to moderate content in such a large and rapid moving thread.
  • On too many occasions we've had members mistaken this thread for a Debate Pit-style free-for-all, leading to abusive behavior.
  • Content quality is especially difficult to maintain. There is ultimately a lack of a guiding light for this topic apart from members pounding out a slew of unrelated opinions.
  • Megathreads like this one wreak havoc on MLP's SOE (search engine optimization). In other words, topics of interest that might otherwise turn up as unique hits for MLP Forums are lost.

The bottom line is that this thread's history reflects repeated instances of negative user experience. Posting unpopular opinions became an excuse to declare even abhorrent and offensive positions, inviting fights between members. Remember: every thread is bound by the same rules of mutual respect.

With that all said, RIP thread.
