I don't know whether it depends on genetics/traits but, their foals could have the variations of a unicorn or a pegasus since Cadance was possibly originally a unicorn then she became a princess in which she ascended into an alicorn. My theory, anyway.

For unpredictability and for a potential plot-line/lesson, I think their baby should be an ordinary earth pony somehow. I think that would be more compelling than a baby alicorn.
