The New Pencil Hoof - Character Study

Pencil Hoof

Recommended Posts

I promised more art this Summer, and here are the first few pieces. I'll try and upload some more later.

Anyway, for those of you that don't know, this is my OC and ponysona, Pencil Hoof. He's popped up a couple times before-

but stopped showing up around exam time when I got busy. Anyway, after I saw the Pony Pile Up project, and the Wallpaper project, I decided to draw him again, so I could enter proper art for both. After a couple of days of drawing, inking, and colouring, I had a nice character study. Then, as I was posting this topic (at 6:00am, my time) and looking at the previous links, I noticed something was missing, and had to go back and edit ALL the character designs, take the pictures all over again, editthem in GIMP all over again, take the old ones down from DeviantArt, and put the new ones up (*goes to do that now*).

*sigh* Well, I guess it was still worth it.

Would appreciate if you'd check out my DA. I don't have very much on there right now, but like I said, I plan to have more on the way :Dhttp://pencilhoof.deviantart.com/

I'll also have a DA link for all the pictures I post if you want to leace a comment :)

Without further ado... Pencil Hoof! ^_^

These are the colours I used (the numbers are the ones on my Prismacolour Scholar pencil crayons (I think those are universal) so if anyone wants to draw him or some thing, they know what colours I used )

Not bad at all! :)

Proportions are spot-on! I'd suggest also doing some more interesting poses of him, with tons and tons of slanty lines -- slanty lines are always fun. And, maybe a 45 degree profile of him as well, instead of side and front views?

In addition, what type of non-colored pencils are you using to work with? Would it be safe to assume HB #2? If so, I'd suggest going for something softer for the basic sketch, and something harder for accenting -- That way your original outline is a lot lighter and easier to work from. And finally, how are you going about on your undersketching? I see erased lines, but they seem more like you jumped right into outlining instead of undersketching. The proportions turned out fine anyways, but drawing skeletal structures in very lightly (and erasing soon after) is key for planning interesting poses. That way you only have to attempt the limbs (and other body parts) once to get it in the ballpark.

Oh, and I'd suggest upgrading your eraser ^_^

Thank you, all those eraser marks are what it took to get it spot on :P

To be honest, while I wasdrawing these, i was basically teaching myself the proportions, and how to get it right, but the slanty lines and the 45 degree angles are definitely the next things I'm going to teach myself :)

I'm actually using a mechanical pencil, as I always do when I draw. I don't really like using other types of pencils, though I do have a pack of Staedtler 8B - 2H pencils, I don't really use them becaus they're oretty expensive, and I don't want to waste them, also, I like to have a very sharp point at all times, and I'm not usually around my pencil sharpener when I draw, so it's a bit of a hassle to draw a litle then sharpen, rinse and repeat :S

I don't usually undersketch, and it's the same rason I use a mechanical pencil I'll show you why...

That guy^ is my hero. Without him, I would still be either really sucky, or completely mediocre at drawing. I've spent hours upon hours trying to draw in a similar style to his, and as you can see, his undersketch is basically an outline, so I'm used to doing a similar thing.

In fact the first video is usually the way I do my "undersketch". I've tried the skeletal thing before, though, and it' not bad, but right now, in terms of undersketches, I'm trying to find something that works :S

I used to have a couple pretty good erasers -actual art erasers- I... borrowed from my art teacher. I kind of lost them somewhere in my house, but I'll see if I can find one somewhere, because you're right, my eraser does suck (I wear it keeps getting worse and worse ._. )
