I'm still hobbling along on an i5-3570 @3.4 GHz, 8GB RAM and an AMD R7 230. And yet I still hit 30+ FPS in most game I play.

My computer is from 2010.  It just gets older and older.  The only real part that died on it was the 580 video card which I replaced with a 760 a year or two ago.  I also added an SSD drive when my windows install got unstable(putting a fresh build of windows 7 stopped those issues).  Currently the i7-950 processor is still about as fast as any reasonable current alternative.

 

The biggest "problem" I have is the sabretooth x58 motherboard.  It takes memory in threes and won't handle 8gb sticks, and doesn't like having 6 memory blocks.  So I still have the 6GB of memory in it that I started with, and really the best I could do is toss the three 2GB sticks and replace them with 4GB ones.

 

Time was if 6 years went by, the processors would be 50 times faster not 50 percent faster(if that and only if you buy high end).

Current setup handles everything I need it to, but Black Friday sales seemed an appropriate time to upgrade. Plus my old CPU was getting up there in age. One of the most solid CPU's out there(Longevity wise), but it was time to move on to better.
