Title: Suited For Success
Air Date: February 4, 2011
Synopsis: Rarity offers to make dresses for her friends for the upcoming Gala but gets in over her head when she tries to incorporate all of their individual styling ideas.

The very first Rarity-focused episode, which also brought on Rarity's first complete solo song, 'Art of the Dress'. Edited by DashForever

Art of the dress is a great song. I think i actually like it better then winter wrap up.

There is also the moral which is also pretty good. The humor is great as always.

And yay for the birth of 20% cooler.

Though, I do have one problem with this episode:

I really dislike this image of Pinkie. It justs rubs me the wrong way.

The first Rarity episode, and boy is it a good one!!! This episode got me to really start liking Rarity and seeing her as a good character (mind you, it didn't get me to love her... yet. That didn't happen until later in the season). After seeing the episode, I was struck by just how talented, business-focused, and generous Rarity was; that, and I absolutely love her singing voice!!! Definitely the most mature and refined singing voice out of the Mane 6, and "Art of the Dress" was a great first song to introduce us to Rarity's solo singing voice!!! :D

One of my favorites!

Reason: rarity

What I liked about it:

I could really relate to this episode... Making the signature for the brony guards wasn't that hard... But once that saw it... Um... Other events then we went back to my original idea... Lol

Art of the dress is the most listen to song on my iPhone... It was one good song!

Overall... It was the episode that made me a rarity fan... And it was AWESOME!!!

Plus it had the: 20% quote!

I thought it really showed her element of Generosity, in this episode it seems that all she wants to do is be generous and give her friends what will make them happy, yet she wants to make the dresses look good as well. But her friends want what they really like on the dress, and what they like may not be what exactly looks good. rarity is not my favorite ponies, and at the benign of the show I used to hate her, but this episode was the episode was the one that made me begin to like her. And in the end they all got great looking dresses, and the friends worked together to make Raritys dream dress. :) after all that I would have to say it was a great episode.

Funny story:

Like most I began watching the show in chronological order.

When I got to this episode, and Rarity started to sing, I honestly fast-forwarded through it, since I guess I don't like Rarity's singing, or at least her songs. This caused me to miss the 20% cooler line. It was only after being half way through season 2 that I had to go back and re-watch the episode to see it "in the wild."

Lol

Ooh, such an awesome episode!

I will admit, for a first solo, "Art of the Dress" was pretty cool!

And I loved how Fluttershy knew almost everything about sewing - the stitches, the fabric, the lace, etc.

"I'm wallowing in - whatever ponies wallow in!"

Yeah, I liked the episode overall, but that quote pushed it over the top. Leave it to RD to contradict Rarity's attention to detail and just "make it cooler"!

I'm like Rarity in that sense. I like to have control and know details. It would drive me crazy if someone was just like "Needs to just be cooler"

One of the best episodes of Season 1 I've seen so far. I am not into fashion but I love when Rarity's at it :D And yes, I am still watching S01 episodes.

This has got to be my favorite episode so far! (I'm still watching all of them for the first time in order)

The song "Art of the Dress" is a direct reference to "Putting it Together" by Sondheim from the musical Sunday in the Park with George (I'll include a link to the song so you can hear the similarities) I am a musical theater performer and I just about flipped out when I heard "Art of the Dress" for the first time. It was amazing to hear the similarities between that and a Sondheim song that is not very well known. I'm so excited to keep watching and discover more surprises throughout the series!

I found this episode a bit painful to watch, even though it all turned out good at the end (other than Rarity fainting lol)

Rarity spent lots of time and dedication into making the dresses for her friends and was so eager to show them to only be shut down. Hall that hard work was for nothing. I've had something like this happen to me before and it doesn't feel good at all.

But all well that ends well :D

Seriously, I've heard way too many people say that Rarity is a bitch and she has no redeeming qualities.  LOOK at what she does in this episode!!!  Despite all the crap she gets from her friends, and despite how "ugly" the dresses were, she did it anyway!  If you ever say Rarity has no redeeming qualities, take a damn look at this episode!

This episode is one of the best. Two words, Vinyl Scratch. She has been such an inspiration to so many brony artists and a lot of it may not have ever happened without the short appearance in this episode from her.

It was nice to see Rarity showcase both her love of fashion and generosity without one existing at the cost of the other. The end lessons about not biting off more than you can chew and not looking a gift horse in the mouth (the latter being appreciatively punny) are good lessons to learn the easy way. Rarity's singing voice (or rather, Kazumi Evans') is good, but I didn't personally find the tune all that catchy. Rarity, as a background character, can seem quite shallow, but episodes like this that really focus on her and shine a light on her true personality prove this idea incorrect, she represents Generosity well.

I don't want to start typing an essay, but I do want to add that I find it interesting that a seemingly inauspicious episode left such a large imprint with the 20% line and the presence of Vinyl Scratch. It is amazing how seemingly minor things can create such big waves.

The first I saw of the show was half of this episode, and I gotta say it kind of blew my mind to see a purple and white unicorn act the way Rarity did in her breakdown, which was the start of the love I have for her today. Overall, this episode is definitely one of the best of the entire series, heck even Lauren Faust says so, I always try and watch it again when I can. :D

The opening of this episode is fantastic. First, pretending she's been complimented, then her conversations with Opal. Her glasses? Ermagerd I love them so much. Rarity's passion for clothes make others want to share in it, even if they themselves aren't interested.

Tanks are part of pony cannon!

Everyone knows the Art of the Dress is awesome, so I don't need to go into detail there.

I found it didn't follow pony form that the girls didn't like the dresses Rarity made. However, there wouldn't have been much of a story if they hadn't. I liked the chance for Rarity to show that she was Generosity by remaking the dresses, even if she didn't agree with the choices they made. Also, I'm not sure what Twilight has to complain about, since her first dress from the beginning of the episode was just plain hideous.

I'm not really sure what Rarity is in such a rush over, since the Grand Galloping Gala is not for several more episodes, but oh well.

I usually think that fits being thrown are annoying, but Rarity just makes it so cute with her stomping while demanding "tell me"or Fluttershy. Also, how does Flutters not step on her tail while she's backing up?

Anyone who has ever been in the service industry can relate the the reprise of Art of the Dress. Difficult customers abound! I love the subtle snub about money in this song as well, giving the finger to the higher ups at Hasbro.

I wanted to smack Hoity Toity, just kind of generally.

That Rarity doubts herself, even after knowing the initial set of dresses really resonated with me. Her bathrobe is amazing too.

For an adult the ending is predictable, however, it was delivered with class and grace, and I have to say, I think suited for success is probably my favorite episode.

Honestly, I could write an entire essay about why this episode is great, but I've talked about it so many times that I'm just going to make a short list:
  • Best display of Rarity's generosity
  • Fantastic analogy for the creative process in general, especially when working with/for other people
  • "Art of the Dress"
  • Really highlighting that Rarity is a creative artist and entrepreneur, rather than a mere trend-follower.

I could gush for hours about this one, but I think I'm going to cut it short in the interest of time. Suited For Success is the best season one episode, bar none, and the second best episode of the entire show (just barely behind Sweet and Elite). It's good.

I like it. Rarity is my second favorite pony and I like how she's never really had a bad solo episode.(Unless you hate this, Sweet and Elite, or Rarity takes Manehatten)

This episode probably has the best use of Rarity's generosity since she makes all those dresses for free and doesn't take a break. Whenever someone calls her selfish, I always point them to this episode.

Unfortunately, I have very mixed opinions on this episode. It seemed selfish that the rest of the mane 6 did not notice or seem to care that they were pushing Rarity too hard. This is a nitpick but I hate that this episode gave birth to the 20% cooler meme.

However, it was nice of the others to finish making the dress for Rarity and I strongly agree with the moral of not looking a gift horse in the mouth.
