What do you do when you're feeling sad?

Well, the last time I suffered from major depression the first things I did were: throw all the sharp objects to the other side of the room (because they were freaking me out), put on a song I like (I had it on repeat and listened to it for what felt like hours; now I can't listen to that song without remembering that time) and then assumed the fetal position (and no, I'm not joking).

Normally, I just try to do the things that I normally enjoy: playing games, listening to music, reading etc. I don't really enjoy those activities nearly as much when I'm depressed, but at least it helps keep my mind from wallowing in depression to an extent. The most notable thing I do is write out my thoughts and worries and everything that's bothering me and then I file it away someplace where I'll never look for it. I don't know if the symbolism has some kind of effect on me, but this has always helped me get over my depression for one reason or another.

I honestly don't. I used to be a pretty depressed individual and took medicine for it. After I stopped taking them, my depression all but disappeared entirely. I still have a few bouts of depression here and there but ultimately I don't feel I was ever actually depressed.

It might be because I'm not at a level that my depressive thoughts can affect me that much but I find letting my mind and body process negative emotions does more to get over them than trying to get rid of them which just makes my mind reject the idea of getting past them.

I couldn't tell you why but I can honestly say I like the sensation of being depressed. Some have told me it's probably because I just like attention but when I'm REALLY depressed I keep it to myself for the most part so that certainly isn't it. Oh well, I still say allowing yourself to feel those feelings is more effective than trying to block them out. (This might vary depending on the degree of your depression and the type of person you are though so don't take my word on that)

Distractions help.

And if not distractions, find a legitimate excuse for accepting the cause of your anxiety. Not a bullshit excuse that you'll subconsciously see through, but whatever you're anxious about, find a way to bring a bit of closure to it, and accept that "It's not my fault and it's out of my control," and I find once that I accept that the issue is out of my control, and thus not my fault, I can think a little easier.

Almost like a form of CBT I think.

Lately, it seems that a lot of people are suffering depression. I myself have a mild depressive disorder, so I know the feeling. It's crippling. So I am making this thread in an attempt to bring even a little bit of joy to those despairing right now or at any time.

Here in this thread, we shall share anything you like that is uplifting. Art, music, fanfiction, you name it. Here you may also plan with others to play games like TF2, WoT, Minecraft, or whatever. You may also seek help or advice for a problem, similar to the Life Advice section. The only rules is to keep vulgar language and profanity to a minimum, no NSFW, and no grimdark.

I will start us off. Here is some art from a talented artist by the deviantart name of Equestria Prevails

Now here are some orchestra pieces that I have really enjoyed in the past.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AStMpnCgVkY

As well as some interesting pieces from a Youtuber by the name of Smooth McGroove.

Now, here are some of my favorite fanfics from FIMFiction.

Worlds Apart is a very good story that is similar to My Little Dashie. But don't let it fool you into thinking it a sad tale. It is a very heartwarming story that is well written and will always be in my favorites.

Friendship is Magic: The Adventures of Spike is an adventure story that starts a little after Dragon Quest. It is a great tale that has Spike grow in both size, ability, and maturity. It has a Romance tag, but is actually very light on romance, only a mention of it here and there. I understand that not everyone likes shipping.

Achievement Hunters in Equestria places your favorite Rooster Teeth Achievement crew in Equestria in a very funny story. Warning, contains strong language. I recommend it for a good laugh.

On The Importance Of Spelling is a funny one shot between Candence and Shining Armor that starts with with some rather funny innuendo and moves into a funny back and forth from there. Again, highly recommended for a humorous time.

I look forward to seeing what everypony else has to share in this thread, and hope that this helps with your depression. Stay strong MLP Forums.

Wow, this is a pretty cool idea, and a very thoughtful one from yourself dude.

I've been having some more depressive moments a few times here and there. Its kinda getting better I think though, but yeah. I don't have any actual depressive Disorder, (That I know of) but I do get depressed randomly at times. Sometimes for reasons and sometimes for no reasons really.(Maybe thats just teenage mood swings :P.)

I might take some interest into this thread though, both for helping me feel better when I feel down, and because I enjoy helping others feel up.

A very kind thing for you to do though :). I'm very happy you decided to put the effort into starting this! I hope it helps people out!

I guess if you're gonna have a thread like this, you've gotta have this song, it's pretty much mandatory:

Wow awesome thread idea! I think we all get a little down every now and then. Admittedly, sometimes when I have no one to talk to, I feel lonely. I have to admit that before I found this show, I was not exactly the most positive person. But after discovering the show and making some friends here, I felt happy about being a part of a great fandom.

If any of you are feeling down or need someone to talk to, you can always PM me. :)

For someone like me, even this thread may not help. (I am incredibly depressed mixed in with hardcore self hatred and self esteem issues)

For everyone else, this is not pony related, but sometimes the best way to be happy is to hate EVERYTHING.

@@ActFast231,

You may have noticed that the title of your thread has changed a bit. This is due to one of the site rules,

Don't create anything and call it "official" without asking Feld0 first. This also applies to things that may not necessarily use the word "official" but may still be mistaken as such. Just ask nicely - it's only a problem if you do it without permission, and Feld0 will usually say yes. If you're wondering why we have this policy, please take a look at this post.

No big deal or anything, just letting you know. While I'm here, here's a video that sometimes helps when I'm feeling crappy. Something about her smile and the song tend to pick me up a bit :). I tend to just read fluffy shipfics though, and those help too.

My dreams fucking suck, it's not like I can dream about whatever I want. If I could dream about Dashie, I would spend every night dreaming about being with her...if only I could do that...*sigh*...

I've looked into this, and I have absolutely no idea how to do it. I've never been able to just dream about whatever I want. It seems like certain people are just able to control their dreams, and some aren't. And even if I could somehow control my dreams, I wouldn't even know how to make it so I dream about Dashie...

Hold on a second there. Some of you are not mentioning things you need others for. You are able to deal with depressive thoughts on your own? Always? No offense, really, but my experience is that you need to talk to others to really or most efficiently overcome those thoughts. That's why I search for conversations. Not necessarily to talk directly about my problems, but contact with others itself helps me a lot.

And besides from that? Well, I discovered that watching a random episode of our favorite flash animated TV-show has the tendency to always cheer me up.

In case I can't get rid of the depressive mood, I try to transform it. I can deal better with anger and wrath than with sadness and gloom. Yeah, don't try to talk to me when I do that. Could backfire... Not the best solutiuon, I know...

It is possible with a lot of practice, it took me about a year before I had my first after practising recalling my dreams and having dreams and the moment I had had a few I stopped caring about sleeping properly I stopped having them! But they are super fun and awesome!!! I made my entire town rise up out of the ground once :D!

I have Major Depression and have had it for the last ten years. Truly the thing that has helped me most is my therapist. But hey she gave me ideas too so let's see..

Getting up and doing something is good if it's a mild attack. Just something like washing up or doing the laundry. It makes me feel better.

Listening to music and having myself cry can help too. Depression is apathy so having myself feel is a great release.

Writing down how I feel and why I feel that way and what I can do to overcome it. It helps a lot for taking it apart bit by bit and finding solutions for myself.

Punching a pillow can help too though. Heh.

Making sure I take my antidepressants every day!

Talking/venting to my boyfriend can help sometimes. Though not all the time. It depends what kind of mood I am in. If I am completely apathetic I just won't care.

honestly, for me I just do something i am passionately interested in. So for me, I watch anime, read manga, and look up cute things on the internet. These 3 things make me either forget my sadness for the moment, or resolve my problem by cheering me up.

So I would advise that, do something you truly deep down love to do.

  • 7 months later...

Sometimes I listen to music. I don't usually talk about it or tell anyone though. No matter how badly I want to comforted... no matter how much I want a shoulder to cry on, I usually just end up keeping it inside. I don't think most people would wanna hear me talk about my petty problems anyways.
