There's really no excuse, when you think about it. They're a massive corporation, they can afford to upgrade a server, especially considering the profits their store brings, and and that nobody can purchase anything when the item system is down. There are MMORPGs where a server handles inventories, player stats, locations, monster spawns, NPC locations, NPC shop inventories, player shop systems, and hundreds of other tasks, yet don't become erratic after every update. Team Fortress 2's item server, which handles items, one thing, fails frequently after every major update. Valve's a huge corporation with a massive grip on the PC gaming industry, much larger than a MMORPG company. They can afford to improve the item system server, they just refuse to. Of course the Cosmetic items will stay valuable, but how will the Pyrovision Goggles do? They seem like they'll be a Ghastly Gibus, but there's no annual event that happens to upgrade it.
