The Brony Documentary Discussion

I liked it. I don't understand why everyone is complaining about it being biased. It's supposed to be a positive introduction to bronies, which you won't find on sources like fox news. Everyone already knows that there is a "dark side" to the fandom. They don't need to be reminded, especially when the goal is to get people to understand the idea of being a brony.

I really like the fact that large portions of the fandom reject the "dark side" aspects and refuse to allow everyone in the fandom to be defined by them. Accentuating the positive is EXACTLY what needs to happen when people bring those sorts of things up.

No, media pundits and trolls, we are not as others choose to portray us. We are who WE choose to be. Makes me smile a bit on the inside.

And on the outside.

This thread appears to be related to the My Little Pony franchise and/or the Bronydom in general. Thus, it has been sentenced to Sugarcube Corner.

This is an automatically generated message, by the way.

I purchased the digital version of "Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony."  I have only watched it once, but I really liked it and I will probably watch it again sometime.  I love John De Lancie's story about doing the Discord voice and forgetting all about it - then getting all the emails from Bronies after it aired.

A Simple Discussion About The Brony Documentyr And what It Means For The Brony Community

The following views are my own and came from my recent listening to an interview with John De Lancie, better known as Discord, or "Q" to the trekkie's.

The Documentry, "Bronies:The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans Of My Little Pony" has recieved much praise from the Brony community and many others outside of the so called "Umbrella" that encompasses our tight-knit community was not created for the express purpose to disprove the "haters" views that we are perverts, immature or all gay, instead it was created to show the facts, to show what Bronies are and why we view MLP:FiM in the light that we do.

It was made as a labour of love to show outsiders who aren't familiar with our particular fandom exactly WHAT a Brony is and to ask a question to the people who have critical views of us... "Why should a group of people who value love, tolerance and Equality be shunned and possibly put down?"

Why is it that (for the Male fans) peopel expect certain actions from Males in general. Why are WE expected to love guns, violence, muscles and all those "Masculine" subjects and idea's...why is it that people expect Males in general to be silent and strong and people who shouldn't be "kind" and "friendly".

It all stems from the idea's placed in our heads at a young age, that Men are supposed to be doing all the hard labour while women are meant to be doing the more non-physical and "caring" work such as nursing and cooking and so on. Well thats where our community comes in. John De Lancie described the Brony community as "the start of something" ... the new generation of change.

The idea that Bronies were literally changing what people view as the idea of "Masculine" and
Feminine" is the general idea amongst many fans and distant on-lookers of our community.

Thats where the Brony documentry came into fruition. After John De Lancie was discussing Bronies to his friend, the Documentry maker Michael Brockhoff, the idea was brought up to create a Documentry to explore this phenomenon that was occuring amongst many mature adults.

At first John was hesitant to start this project but after recieving a few links to news articles shunning the Brony community he decided to go through with it, if nothing more then to just show the outside world exactly what a Brony was, and to show them the facts and letthem make their own conclusion.

And thus they travelled to a few Brony conventions such as B.U.C.K, BronyCon and Galacon to shoot exactly what happens in these great gatherings, to show people how much fun and love goes around amongst us when we're in a comfortable Brony-friendly environment.

People can finally see exactly what we are truly like, behind the pony images and meme's and our tons upon tons of music, art and FaniFictions...a Documentry we coudl show our parents, friends and in general anyone who was willing to see exactly what a Brony is.

This documentry, while only a tiny part of our communities massive outpouring of work is a milestone, as it serves as a way for us to show people exactly WHO we are, and to give them enough info to make a researched opinion.

Enough from me though, what do you all think about the Documentry?

And more importantly about what the Documentry means for the Brony community?

Seems interesting....

Well, i would say that it doesn't make a big difference because of the lack of Bronies :P

But hey! I can't wait to see it

I thought the documentary was very well produced and I liked how it told the stories of bronies from all over the world, but I think I can speak for many of us who saw it when I say that it wasn't what we hoped it would be.

What were we all hoping for? You'll get different answers on that one. I wanted to see a documentary about us and the ponies. Something that would show the world we were perfectly normal, everyday young people who just happen to like a pony show because it's well written and animated and we love the characters.

We didn't get that. Instead...

...We got an overlong, fragmented story about BronyCon that highlighted only a few actual bronies--and forgive me, they were nice guys with interesting stories, but it's like the filmmakers went out of their way to find the most awkward-looking fans they possibly could. And the rest of it was all big names like Tara, De Lancie, Sethisto and Purple Tinker preaching to the converted. (My 'favorite' was the psychologist who connected bronyism to 9/11. Did she ever watch the show?)

Almost no female bronies got attention, the show itself was pushed to the background after the first 10-15 minutes, and they glorified brony-ism to the point of obnoxiousness. If they thought that kind of testimonial was going to change a single hater's mind (or even attract neutral people to the fandom), I have to think they were disappointed. My favorite thing about it was that four tracks by one of my favorite brony musicians (Jastrian) were used. But the rest of it left me numb.

As a standalone project, it was okay. But it wasn't what I wanted.

I'll be brutally honest, I think it's extremely stupid and I'm even a little disappointed in Lauren Faust for promoting it.  It's not going to make any impact because the only ones who will watch such a thing are bronies and people who irrationally hate bronies to begin with.  People need to realize that most people just don't care about this show or the people who watch it and it shouldn't be made into such a big deal just because the nerds that visit 4chan like to spam hate and porn and stupid memes through the internet

Hello. We already happened to have a thread for the purpose of discussing the Brony Documentary and sharing what we thought about it, and other opinions, so I have merged your topic with the older one. In the future, please use the search feature to ensure that there aren't already topics that serve the purpose of any you are planning to create :).

Still haven't seen this, but I would really like to.

Considering I could subjectively call any piece of media that I didn't like "x amount of money down the toilet", that's not a good way to put it. A doc was made, and a large number of people enjoyed it, so it wasn't a waste.

Oh..  I was under the impression that documentaries were made to inform the otherwise uninformed masses...  But since the masses don't care then I guess bronies being praised and called normal good people then that makes the entire documentary completely worth the money spent.  It doesn't matter if the documentary was funded by bronies and endorsed by the shows creator and the primary demographic is the typical brony obsessed with the fandom because this documentary is just about praising the fans, thus bias and real information is completely irrelevant.

And it is necessary, because the fans need to be praised to boost morale.......

Every doc has a bias, because you have to care enough one way or the other about the issue to make one, and the mission statement from day one was to show the good side of the fandom and counter the bad press. Everyone has been informed of the bad side all over the damn place, they needed a view of the other side.

What's up everypony? Has anyone seen Bronies: The Extremely Unexpected Adult Fans of My Little Pony' dvd?

I have seen several amateur brony documentary videos on YouTube with mixed results usually there okay  but nothing memorable. Since this appears to be the only 'professional' documentary on My Little Pony: FIM I'm wondering if it's worth it's current price tag?  See the official website if you're unfamiliar with the film.

http://www.bronydoc.com/

I'd be interested in any and all feedback. Also anyone who has seen the 'Extended Interviews' disc which for some reason they are selling separately (which sucks since 13 bucks for a digital edition of the film would of been fine had they included the interviews but whatever I'm kind of cheap.)

Thanks in advance to every and any pony who answers.

I have seen it. I don't honestly know what to say about it. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't anything too special either. I would probably give it 3/5. The movie was just mostly interviews of bronies and their stories, and some stuff at BronyCon. (From what I can remember) If you really want it and have a few bucks to spend, go ahead and buy it. But if not, you should perhaps save your money.

That's a different documentary.

With that said, just got it off Scrnland and I'm watching it now.

And with that said, it's giving me a bittersweet feeling. On one hoof it is inspiring to see how we grew into the amazing community we are now, but at the same time I feel a bit sad that I don't have any skills that would allow me to give back to the fandom. I'm not creative, and I've never invested much time in right-brained activities, but now suddenly I feel like I'm less of a brony for not being able to give back in an artistic capacity. In two months this community has given me so much, but I have so little to give back in gratitude.

It's weird, I've been in fandoms before, and I've been happy to sit on the sidelines while others made stuff, but never before have I had such an urge to be in the thick of the fan work creation before. It's not a sense of jealousy, either. I would want to pave my own creative way, I just don't know how.

But I'm inspired. I've got a sketchbook full of ponies and a computer full of vectors. Plus, I just laid down $60 for a Kansas Acoustic Guitar. I would have never done these things if it weren't for this amazing community, and for that, I am eternally grateful. smile.png

With every passing moment of this documentary I am reminded why I love this community so much. smile.png

I feel exactly the same!! I sat back for a while and watched as everyone made their own customs, art, and plushies and, while I've been a part of many other creative fandoms who post things on deviantart, I've never had such an urge to start on any fanart for a fandom quite like this one. I don't just want to see cool customs being made, I want to make them myself - it's just not the same being an "armchair brony" watching as the rest of the fandom shows off their creative skills. In this fandom, it's far more rewarding to give back!

An update with what's currently happening wit the documentary,

Bronies - The Unreleased Tapes

The team behind it are wanting to release the vast amount of extra footage that was recorded but did not make it's way into the documentary itself due to it not fitting the theme that they were aiming for. The problem is however that the footage is sitting in a raw format and needs to be edited and administered but that costs monwy which is why they have started another fundraiser but on indiegogo this time.

How much material is released will depend on the amount raised but they would like to include:

  • Segment about the fire at BronyCon. We captured the fire itself and the crowds having a great time outside singing and bonding as the fire department works.
  • Extended segment on “Sethisto” and the team from Equestria Daily covering BronyCon.
  • Segment on Convention Chair Andrew Brockert, including pre-BronyCon madness and his car accident on the way to BronyCon.
  • Extended interviews with Military Bronies.
  • Segment about a couple honeymooning at BronyCon.
  • Segment on Megan Youmans and the Traveling Pony Museum
  • Segment about a Malaysian Brony who makes a trip to America.
  • Segment on the Pirate Party in Germany who uses episodes of MLP in “Pony Time” time-outs to cool down heated political meetings.
  • Segment on a gay couple that attends B.U.C.K. and find acceptance in the fandom.
  • Extended segment on the BronyCon Cosplay Contest.
  • Segment on a young man who meets and gets career advice from Lauren Faust.
  • Segment on a woman who came to meet Lauren Faust, her former childhood babysitter, at BronyCon. Lauren often drew pony pictures for her.
  • Segment on a family of Bronies (Father, Mother and Teen).
  • Extended segment on artist John Joseco.
  • Segment on Tara Strong at San Diego's ComicCon.

Well, I did my part to support it, the price drop came before I made any plans, so I went ahead and got the whole works(a collectors box for those of us that got both at once would've been nice, but at least they didn't cram all four discs in one case).

Got my copy now. I actually haven't seen the main movie yet, as I went straight to the extra interviews. (That's what I was more interested in seeing anyway.)

The interviews are really good, and I was pleasantly surprised at how broad the topics were while still staying mostly focused on the show. Lauren's interview is particularly awesome. Apparently she was an X-Men fan. Always good to encounter another one of those. :)

I saw it a couple weeks ago and found it intriguing- especially when they brought in these psychologists and their data about brony personality trends and other broad (and more precise) psychological findings.

I also liked the part where they brought together the military bronies. If these guys, the manliest men out there, can be bronies, then I can too.

I actually bought the Bluray for it awhile back.

I thought it did a pretty good job at covering most aspects of the fandom. I agree that I especially liked the part with the the military bronies since i'm one myself. Always nice to see more of that.

Oh! I've seen that. One of my IRL buddies donated like $100 to making the film on Kickstarter, and he gave me one of the free copies he was sent in return.

Personally, I liked it. It wasn't eye-opening for me personally since I'm already part of the fandom, but for people who don't know anything about the fandom... Well, I thought they did a very good job of showing the versatility of the fandom, of showing what issues fans have to deal with, the persecution we often get, and the sincere like of the show. I really liked the psychologist segment, since it diffused the stereotypes we get as man-babies.

Like I said, this doc wasn't really tailored to us, even though it was about us. Why would we need the concept of bronies explained to ourselves? This documentary is to explain the awesomeness of the fandom to those who don't understand it.

I recorded a show on the LOGO network that seemed to be part of a series called "WHAT?!"  The episode was about bronies.  But when I started to watch the episode, it turned out to be a 45 minute version of the "Bronies" documentary with the opening title sequence to this "WHAT?!" show tacked on to the front.

@@Shawn Parks, Ha, I only heard of that part because I was watching The Soup and they had a segment on it. Astonishingly, much like I'm sure the creators of the documentary wanted, they didn't really say that bronies are sex depraved virgins so hey this documentary did something!

Also as for my thoughts on the documentary itself: not bad, but not great either. The way I see it there's a little more that could have been said and done and I dunno I don't really like a lot of the focus on brony celebrities that I saw.
