Brook 663
I only have a few that bother me: 1.Clopfics written by people that haven't the slightest on how biology works - Yeah I've read a few and in all honesty people who write that sort of stuff really need to read a book about anatomy -.-' 2. No visual description of OCs - If I don't have anything to correlate the personality to, how am I supposed to imagine what's going on? There's really no reason for this other than to keep anonymous, it mostly bothers me when it's a big part of the plot and this happens. 3. Super-random-WTF moments - That is, when it does not fit what's going on. For instance if it's an adventure fanfic and the characters are in a lair of a demon creature, it wouldn't make sense for them to suddenly start confessing their love or something, just stuff that's out of place I guess, that's what bothers me. Bardock 139
Very good points. I don't really have any nuisances myself. As long as the fanfic is good, I'll read it. Although not shipping Flutterdash is just a crime in fanfiction. Worship the OTP!
Blue Moon 6,332
5. When one of the Mane 6 mentions that they or another member mentions their element of harmony for the reason behind their action. This drives me crazy. It just feels so weird in the dialogue, and makes no sense. None of the Mane 6 ever do that in the show, so why should they say it in fanfiction? Come to think of it, they hardly ever mention the elements of harmony. 4. When a character says one of their quotes from the show. For some reason, whenever an author writes some dialogue for Rainbow Dash along the lines of "20% Cooler," I get really annoyed. It sounds stupid, and most people don't quote themselves. This goes for the others as well, but Rainbow Dash's lines are the one where I see it most used. Another derivative for this is when writers go overboard with the character's dialogue. For example, I hate it when every single dialogue for Fluttershy ends with "I mean, if that's okay with you." I know she says that from time to time, but not after every sentence. 3. Leatherpantsing This refers to a term meaning downplaying the villain's flaws, and making the reader feel sympathetic towards the villain. Now, it's nice and all to see villains in another light, but when it is done to extreme like I see in a lot of fanfictions, it get's annoying. I also hate it when in the process of this, another character who's normally not the antagonist is made into the villain-type. Not only is it out of character, but it's really annoying. I see this the most in fanfics about ponies adopting baby versions of other ponies that are usually the villain. 2. Mary Sues If you're going to add an original character, at least keep them from being mary sues. Isee this a lot in self-inserts, and it ruins the the story in my opinion. 1. Out of character It really bugs me when writers make already established canon characters complete opposite of their character's canon personalities. Another thing that bugs me is when they focus entirely on one trait in a character. For example, they make Rainbow Dash as a pony who cares about no one besides herself, and all she cares about is flying. Along with that, some writers make Rarity appear to be a greedy pony who cares about nothing other than fashion, or Twilight Sparkle as a character who cares about nothing else besides studying.
Sky Warden 2,243
For me, it's just one thing. The lack of understanding about what fiction writing really is. Fiction writing is a beautiful art. You can spit that dancing world in your head onto a piece of paper. The misunderstanding of what fiction writing is leads to various pits some of you have mentioned. Authors don't know what they're actually doing. An interesting number of fan fiction writers just want a cool character, not expressing the actual living soul in the imaginary world in their minds. This leads to Mary Sue characters. They just want to fantasize their OCs bucking with Pinkie Pie in Canterlot and have Celestia joins them, without actually telling a reasonable and logical story, which is naturally made by any insane head. They want to have a, say, Fallout story, but with ponies. Then they ponify the original story without actually making a story whatsoever. They change the main character into Twilight Sparkle, with rocket launchers, and flying monster truck, for the sake of coolness. That's completely plagiarism. A cross-over isn't done like that. They want to write dialogues using a game command-line format so their readers can know that the author plays a particular game, and therefore, the author is cool. They seriously don't know what they're doing. I won't go further. You get my point. Most people now write fan fictions just for popularity, trolling, fulfilling fetishes and fantasies, etc. Edited July 29, 2013 by Aerial Stream
