Good morning everypony! I'm about to get up and get ready! But since, surprisingly, this hasn't been shared here, I wanted to make sure y'all saw one of Obsidian's newest masterpiecesimage.jpg

I adore Rarity.  She's intermittently been my favorite pony, back and forth with Pinkie.

 

I never, ever expected I'd actually like, let alone love, the 'generic fashionista girly frou-frou character for the ACTUAL little girls watching to attach to' that I saw in the first episode.  But then by the end of the 2nd ep I'd seen her show massive amounts of generosity by cutting off her gorgeous tell a la Gift of the Magi, adorably flick it around and cuddle it in one of my favorite gif-moments of the beginning of the series when she first gets it back, and most importantly, kick a manticore in the freaking FACE.  So, I liked her, about as much as any of the other mane6 at the time...

 

And then Suited for Success happened.  And by golly, if that wasn't an episode to get and entire fanbase to fall in love with perhaps the most underrated character in the show at the time, I dunno what was.  An actual episode of MLP about ... dresses and dress-making.  Rarity's first focus ep.  We were all very, very scared it would be 'that one ep' that would kind of ruin our romance with the show that none of us 'should have been watching', the ep that may have broken the spell so to speak for us adult men who were watching this girls' show and reminded us that we really probably shouldn't be.  But it was awesome, well-written, well-handled, explored Rarity's character and made her much more relatable, and had one of the best songs the series would see for a long time.  A++.  Wonderful pony.

 

Then we get Dog and Pony Show.  Don't even get me started about how her whining scenes in that are still some of  my favorite scenes in the whole history of the show and made me fall in love with Tabitha St. Germain's voice acting even more than I already had.. <3  And then we get a fun Rarity presence in so many eps like Green Isn't Your Color and the next season's Putting Your Hoof Down among others... Quality Rarity eps like Sweet and Elite (with more awesome songs)... and the fact that she's always, ALWAYS been a pleasure to see even if she just has incidental parts in the episodes.

 

She's beautiful (the gradient hair and unique eyes and pearl-white body definitely don't hurt); Her voice is absolutely gorgeous; Her personality is extremely selfless and wonderfully generous which triumphantly spits in the face of the usual stereotype of characters like her; and perhaps most importantly to me, she seems to be poorly written/handled far less often than ANY of the other Mane 6.  There have only been a scant few moments in the series in which I didn't love her onscreen presence, and those have basically all been moments like being a bit rude to Spike with the garbage in that one episode, which truth be told is very in-character overall so I can't complain.  She's just the best.  Even if Pinkie Pie's my current favorite, it's easy for me to still say Rarity's the best, hahaha.

And i have to say, Suited for Success is, after all those years and episodes, still my most favorite episode. The same is true for Art of the Dress, which is still my favorite song too.

 

This episode is for me the distilled essence of what Rarity is about: Generosity, self-sacrifice, kindness, hard work, mental strength. Everything that makes her beautiful. I do not know how one can dislike her after watching this one.

Thats a really hard question...

 

She surely would read romance novels, but classics, not those cheap ones with the topless guys on the cover that you can buy at the gas station.

 

Rarity is classy in all things, and i reckon that would also be true for her literature.

 

Of course she would also read books about historic fashion and art, not just for her work, but for her enjoyment too.

Maybe even historic novels like War and Peace! That has everything!

"Charm" huh?  That's one way to put it... That's a very nice pic, by the way!  Aside from the lovely "charm", the coloring and background are phenomenal.  And me thinks you'd like a certain arc in the comics if you haven't read it...

 

I dunno though, Cute Sweet Rarity or "Charming" Dark Rarity?  Both those recent posts make me think of these two different sides of her and I definitely love them both for different reasons.  But after seeing something my friend Madacon just got done drawing, I have to say my current favorite is Just Plain Badass Rarity:

 

 

 

 

 

Also might I add how cool it is that this thread's so fast and you have guys saying stuff like "I won't be around much today, sorry" or "Good morning fans!" - it makes it feel more like some slightly slower-paced Rarity chat room than just a forum thread!  Ah how glad I am I finally joined mlpforums <3  Feels good to be home~

That pretty much how i feel, i had pretty bad experiences, was almost about to quit the fandom. I don't even know why i joined the forums in the first place when i did...

 

But i did not regret it, the people here are great and ghostfacekiller really carved a true Rarity sanctuary out of the mountain here.

A question that fits in my wheelhouse! You realize I would likely write 10,000 words on Rares reading habits alone. 

 

Gentleman, I have always imaged Rarity having a fondness for not just a well written little 'r' romance novel, but specifically several sub-genres. I can see her laying down and reading an old world bildungsroman with romance elements and wish fulfillment elements (Great Expectations, Huck Finn, The Secret Life of Bees). More to that, I would imagine that Historical Narrative or Historic Fiction would be her genre of choice.

Margaret Mitchell's Gone With the Wind.

Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility

 

Any Elizabethan, Regency, or Victorian era romance would suit her, and I could see it being inspiration for her art. If there was a Civil War analog that too, but both GWTW and LW have been mentioned.

 

Rarity has amazing taste period, though I am sure she wouldn't  have a predilection toward Daring Doo books ...

Honestly, they should have known that she has a special gift when it comes to fashion (One of her many, many gifts.)!

 

A little trust in her abilities please, girls! Rarity knows what she does!

 

A pony like Rarity that manages to make her own incredible natural beauty even more stunning, something that seems hardly possible if not for her proving the contrary, should not be doubted like that.
