A rant about Derpy being removed.

Derpy's gone. RIP. Now it's time for a rant. According to Hasbro, they removed her because of complaints about her voice. What's wrong with her voice? She may sound mentally challenged, but what's wrong with that? I volunteer to work with mentally challenged people and they loved Derpy. They could finally have someone on TV who was just like them. MLP treated Derpy respectfully and to remove her is to concede to the overly PC people who think it's offensive. They haven't sat down next to a 5 year old girl with Down's as I have, watching as she wept in happiness to see someone like her on TV. The people who complained were short sighted soccer mothers who didn't want their children to know there were such things as people who are disabled. Those so called politically correct people can go fuck themselves. They haven't played the game of finding Derpy with a disabled child.

 

Rant over, I plan to make a petition to ask Hasbro to return her back to the show. Do any people think that this will change anything or not?

I disagree. I don't think she sounded disabled. I think she sounded like a cute ditz but either way I find it appaling that characters like ED from Ed Edd and Eddy, Pinky from Pinky and the Brain, Ralph Wiggum from the Simpsons, and Patrick Star from Spongebob - all who have been shown to be VERY mentallity impaired - is okay but if Derpy's speech is a bit slow, THAT IS HORRIBLE

Hasbro confirmed that Derpy isnt coming back. Not very likely and if it happens, I'll be surprised. Could you post a screenshot of the tweet?

They will always side with the minority due to the fact they want to prevent lawsuits. Those who are pro-derpy will sign petitions and emails and such but we will not sue. That one offended mother will sue which is stupid.

 

It's like someone makes a picture and 1,000,000 people think its art but 2 find it porn. Those 2 find 2 more who are nuts like them and they find 2 more and eventually they get 100 people together to be a loud protest.

This just makes me so sad! I actually loved Derpy specifically because her voice was different. My whole life I had teachers calling my voice "whiny" or "too high-pitched". Even something so simple about a character can make my day. Derpy's voice was one of them.

Derpy is her name though, not Ditzy. Ditzy as Derpy was never once confirmed and for all we know it could be another pony who is just as clumsy. And I don't know what is the worst pony and actions. I see Derpy as a clutzy cute character who tries her best but sometimes messes up.

 

I've never considered her mentally challanged and I don't think others should too; she's just a clutz like Chuckie on RugRats or Sam in Rocket Power.

 

Dash didn't call her "Derpy" as "HERP DERP" but called her by her name. And Derpy doesn't mean stupid and crosseyed, it just means a Derpy moment where you make a mistake. Like last night I had a Derpy moment when I walked into a metal beam at work cause I was on my phone. It's more clutzy than anything.

if anybody is mentally challenged its the parents, but calling the parents that would be an insult to those who really are, who got in an uproar for something so ridiculous. Derpy was an inspiration in the fanon. I mean she had the hots for Dr. Whooves who felt the same way (in the fanon of course). She inspired the song Great to be Different for Celestia's sake. i thought Derpy was the creators way to say we acknowledge the internet fandom, since Derp and Derpy are internet names given to background people who have minor roles in the scene.

OT: I can't say I care too much for a sprite in the background. Nor could I care about most background ponies. I think the only reason this is a big deal is the principle about the thing. If Golden Harvest were to be removed, only a few would notice, and even less would care.

As I've stated in another thread, there is no longer a relatable character in this.  In a way they're damned if they do, damned if they don't.  In most things (in the UK at least) you'll often find they'll go overboard with being P.C, so this move seems counterproductive.  If convincing enough using people in the target audience who have been upset by the motion, then maybe you'll have a chance.  Otherwise disability is not something that exists in this show.  Scootaloo at this stage is debatable.

 

For something that's a friendly family show aimed at children, this is an important factor IMO.

Derpy getting canned is what happens when you have a world full of diaper-sniffing (in the words of the late, great George Carlin) soccer moms who want their kids to grow up in a little PC bubble, and they want the whole world to conform to their overprotective standards.

 

These people need to realize that the world doesn't revolve around their hover parent standards. The world is full of offensive things (and things that overly-sensitive people find "offensive"). But taking away something that somepony else enjoys because it's offensive to you isnt the answer, it's unfair to those people.These people need to learn to put their sue-happy bullshit aside, ignore what they find offensive, and grew a thicker skin. It's a win-win. We keep our Derpy, and they don't have to watch her. Simple as that.

 

But that's not how it went down, and the vocal minority won, while we the majority got tossed under the buss. Thanks, soccer moms!

Although Derpy was never confirmed to be disabled alot of disabled people still related to Derpy because she is different due to her eyes and slightly clumsy nature. Derpy could have been a teaching moment about people who are seen as different whether they are disabled or for other reasons. What angers me is that the people that complained are 1 for the most part not fans and therefore are judging what they do not understand and 2 have not really even bothered to offer any constructive suggestions on how Derpy should be portrayed instead. I can understand how someone might have the wrong idea at first but to automatically assume some sort of malintent on the part of Hasbro without even bothering to look at the facts is just ridiculous.

Devil's advocate time.

 

The problem I had was it was implied town hall had been destroyed solely by Derpy. Who was acting stupid and doing destructive things for no real reason. I know it's supposed to be clumsiness, but it came across as so forced I just didn't think it was a very flattering portrayal. As for Snails, his intelligence is never called into question and he's never shown to be destructive or the sole cause of a whole slew of problems, one after another (and for the record, I'm not fond of his voice either. I remember thinking "man, they're having two boy kids finally...so why are they making them sound so dumb??"). It was kind of like Derpy couldn't do anything right at all, and it was frustrating.

 

As for the whole "derp means retarded" thing. I didn't even think of that, honestly. I'm so-so on that argument. It was an honest to God mistake on the part of the writers -- they meant no harm by it in the least and I don't blame any of them for the backlash the episode got. I think it was just a case of unfortunate implications that some people didn't take kindly to. Given this show is intended for kids, not Bronies, I would say the word of those concerned parents bears a little more weight. Although, it does make me kind of sad that there were people who identified so strongly with her. That's really the only reason I can think of to keep her on the show. Not because fans didn't like her being removed, but because some people really connected with her.

 

I dunno. I didn't think it was THE WORST. POSSIBLE. THING. But I dunno, I just wasn't as fond of her debut as others were, and I think it was a terrible idea to pander so blatantly to the fans since it turned into people screeching at Hasbro the minute it was changed, and continuing to send death threats to Yamino (who simply voiced her dissent, nothing more) to this day. And calling anyone who disliked it retards and "overly PC" apparently. This fandom is not fond of dissent.

 

Come on guys. You had your fun. But the show must go on. Derpy lives on in COUNTLESS fanworks.

Ok were was it confirmed that she would never make an appearance again? Not that this would be surprising in any way. However to say Derpy is dead is an overstatement  Considering the merchandise released including a new tin I would say she is very much alive. Hasbro has to approve all merchandise if they wanted derpy gone she would be gone. 

That being said I have a number of problems with Derpy being removed/changed.

Minority over Majority
Once again a big company has decided to side with the ignorant minority over the contented vast majority. This is ridiculous most people were fine with it, and many many were furious when this change occurred. As Hasbro must have found out afterward. 


It ruins the the scene
The sound changes are very obvious probably even to some who has never seen the original. Also why change Rainbows voice here? Why not just cut out the word Derpy? Why is Rainbow less annoyed? She nearly got struck by lightning. 

Enforcing a double standard and ignorance. 
This shows a great ignorance of the history of animation in general. Characters like this have been prevelent throught the history of animated media. Goofy, Dopey, Patrick Star, Ed, the list could go on forever. It made even more rediculous when you consider that Derpy never

demonstrated a complete lack of intelegence of Patrick Star. Why is this type of character ok for most of children s programming, but not so here?

I've never, ever heard of an online petition working.

 

Yes, I could see how Derpy could be mistaken for being developmentally disabled.  But the thing is, neither the fandom nor her snippets in canon portrayed that in a negative light.  I was never laughing at Derpy, I just found her really amusing, but I didn't really look at her in any mean spirited way.  She was a beloved character, a fan mascot, and a representative of the great relationship between the fans and Studio B.  To suggest that she's making fun of the mentally challenged is ridiculous.

Derpy was an animation error that got famous because bronies went berserk for of her. I never really cared for her, but she was a nod towards the bronies. I don't know if the expression exists in English but I think that removing her is a shot in the foot. Unnecessary and completely out of proportion.

When these things happen I think of the Jedi Council: a bunch of powerful outdated people who operate on outdated concepts. So what if Derpy was seem as mentally impaired? (What I don't think she was in the show) Like many people with mental disorders, she was capable of operating normally outside the fact that she did the funny stuff expected of cartoons. What? Are we going to remove Twilight because she accidentally turned a bird into a orange? It's the same thing.

IMO, Hasbro lost a good opportunity of looking good by ditching cultural trash.
