Ari appeared shocked to see the two earth ponies with red manes right next to him.  Feigning embarrassment, he scratched the back of his neck with a hoof.

 

"Sorry, ladies, just a bit lost.  I hope I didn't startle you."  He flashed a shy and friendly smile.  "Say, you wouldn't mind helping a pony from the provinces get his cart on track, would you?  I just feel so small here in Rome..."  Adopting an awkward nervousness, he started to babble. "I mean, that is, if you're not doing anything... That was rude, I didn't mean to imply you didn't have better things to do.  I'm sorry.  I should leave you alone."

Scar stuck out his tongue at him. "Oh this is going to be so much fun...I have something to use against you now." He waited a minute before chuckling. "I'm not going to tell anyone Gladius." He said.

 

 

Diamond walked down the street towards Gladius's house. She walked inside and put on a pot of tea before sitting down at the table with her head in her hooves...crying.

Cicada smiled at the stranger. "Don't worry," she said. "We aren't doing anything important at the moment, just walking around looking at all the things we can't afford. I'm Cicely and this is my sister Mari. We don't really live anyplace, just whereever the fancy takes us for the night. And of course, we'd be happy enough to be escorted by a gentlepony such as yourself."

 

Mariposa felt a little worried by how things were going. However, she was sure that the pair of them would be a match for anypony and it was best they stayed together. After all, Cicada was used to living icognito in this city so Mariposa felt she would just go with the flow.

"Great!"  Ari lifted his head and unfolded his wings, smiling happily as he trotted along with his two new companions.  As he smiled he made a mental note about the sisters not having much money.

 

"So, you two haven't been here long either?  I was supposed to enroll in the Ludus Magna today and find a teacher, but I found the arena instead.  I was trying to find out if there were any more matches when I wandered straight out the main entrance!  Oh!"  Ari suddenly whirled on the two and bent a knee.

 

"I am Areus Agentulus, may the gods smile upon our meeting."  Ari stood back up and gave a wink.  "And may you lovely fillies forgive my manners.  Cicely and Mari, was it?  You can call me Ari, if you like."  Ari wondered about the two.  Two young ladies traveling on their own?  And Mari seemed very cautious.  His awkward nervous act doesn't always work on the shy ponies, but Cicely seems to be the bolder one and holding the reins.  Ari decided to just play it with his normal easy going demeanor.  He gave Cicely a wry smile.

 

"You ladies want to see if we can meet a Gladiator?"

"My sister is shy," Cicada explained, giving Ari a winning smile. "And I would love to see if we can find a Gladiator. You see, we haven't much money on either of us, so we've never entered the Colluseum. Mari would be nervous about it, but not of course if we were accompanied by yourself."

This one can read me like a book, Ari thought to himself. Maybe I'm the one who should be careful!  Definitely wanna get to know these two better.

 

"Not to worry, I've a few bits on myself, but I'm not sure we'll need to pay."  Ari walked right past the unoccupied admission booths.  "Looks like things are wrapping up in here anyway.  Some crazy griffon went against the crowd and killed his opponent.  And then some crazy pony stood up and challenged him!  That's what I heard, anyway, I didn't get to see it."

 

Ari noticed an important looking pony wearing a look of dread on her face leaving one of the less crowded tunnels.

 

"Hey girls, check it out.  You think that's the way to the VIP section?"

"For your own good you better not. I meant it when I said I'd sooner kill you than let word get out. Not that I really want to kill you of course, but that won't stop me if I have to. Anyway, here we are. Since I already challenged him, you should be the one to make this challenge."

 

They had arrived at the sleeping quarters, where Ripper was about to leave through the other door.

Cicada looked where Ari pointed, and looked hard at the alicorn leaving, too. "Yes, that is probably where we ought to go," she said. "I've never seen the VIP section; we should go and look, it might be interesting. Maybe we'll even find out something important if we go and explore."

Scar laughed as they entered the Gladiators sleeping quarters. "Oi Ripper ol' boy I need to talk to you...would you agree to me and Gladius teaming up ? By this I mean I want to fight you alongside Gladius." He said, grinning.

 

 

Diamond poured herself some tea and sat back down she stared down at the ground and sipped it...thinking about Gladius. The tunnel had left her mind...all she was worried about was Gladius and the fight.

Ripper stared at him for a while in a way that might well have been described as curious if one could read anything from his masked features. Eventually he nodded.

 

Gladius sighed with relief. "So you'll fight us then? Tomorrow at noon?"

 

Ripper nodded and pushed past them, leaving the arena to go wherever it was he went.

Scar smiled happily. "Well Gladius...this is going to be fun. He just agreed to fight the next best Gladiators in the Arena...it wont be easy but I think we can do this." He said, still grinning.

He turned around and started making his way out of the room. "Meet me for dinner, we should talk about battle tactics...now you can run along to your little miss senator." He chuckled and walked out towards the fighting ring.

"Right. I guess I'll see you in a few hours then. And remember- not a word about me and Diamond. To anyone. Not even Fire- and yes, I know about you and Fire. Now then, I'll be going now. If you need me for anything, though I don't know why you would, I'll be at my house near the guard barracks."

"Yes, Fire and I have kissed a couple times...but we're not really dating...yet." He chuckled. "I'll catch ya later." He said, walking off towards the fighting ring. *I wonder what Fire will think when I tell her I am fighting the Ripper." He thought; entering the room just outside the battle area.

Ari was starting to have his doubts that they were headed in the right direction.  Any special box seats would have been above the ground level, but they had been steadily winding their way down.

 

"This makes, what?  The third time today I've been completely lost?  At least I have somepony to talk to."  Ari looked around at the dark and deserted area.  Scaffolding and support structures held up a very high ceiling with small shafts of light shining at regular intervals.

 

"Wait... I've heard of this place!  This is the pit!  That means..." Ari cast a genuinely nervous glance toward one of the grates above their heads.  A drop of blood gleamed for a moment in the light before descending into the darkness.  "That mean's we're under the arena!"

 

From the gloomy corners of the pit echoed sounds of caged animals, a couple slaves working and snippets of a tense conversation.  a few empty cages hung on rope and pulley lifts.  Most looked like they went up to the fighting area, a couple were a little further off- maybe going to a staging area.  Ari grinned.

 

"I think I know a quick way out."

Gladius walked off and headed for his house. He hoped Diamond was a little better now. He knew she had every right to be upset with him, but if he really was going to risk dying tomorrow, he wanted to spend his last hours with her. He arrived at his house and walked inside.

 

"Diamond? I'm back. Ripper agreed to fight two on one."

Diamond stood up and walked over to the door. She practically talked Gladius in a hug but she didn't speak.

She did feel slightly better about the fact that Gladius would have somepony helping him...but she was still worried. "I...I made some tea...if you want some."

Gladius nodded.

 

"I'd love some. And don't worry Diamond, it's going to be okay. I know we can do it, and I meant it when I promised I would come back alive. I'm not ready to leave you yet."

 

He nuzzled against her cheek.

 

"Anyway, I thought we could spend the rest of the day together doing whatever you want. I don't really care what we're doing as long as I'm with you... I know that was cheesy, but I really mean it."

Diamond let go and kissed him on the cheek. "I am up for anything." She said, forcing a convincing smile. The truth is, Diamond wanted to lock Gladius up and get rid of the Ripper herself...not kill him of course, but do something that would get him out and far away from Rome.

The advisor Vedana Purity was at the Palace library, reading through the scrolls one by one, learning on history and medicine of the ancient days of old. "Interesting...perhaps I shall take this to my quarters for further analysis." The blind unicorn said with a warm smile, wrapping the scroll up and placing it back where it belong, and trotted across the Palace.

Mariposa looked extremely nervous, especially on seeing the blood. "Maybe that's the way out?" she said, pointing with a hoof to a door that was slightly ajar. Just visible was a staircase leading up. "Being underground like this makes me a bit scared."

The other male changeling had found it difficult to get thru the crowds, but soon caught up with the others. His name was Chicane.

The advisor Vedana Purity was at the Palace library, reading through the scrolls one by one, learning on history and medicine of the ancient days of old. Unholy was wandering though the palace, about a million things were flowing through her mind.

she took the book out of hr saddle bag as she trotted into the library.

"time to replace this for a new one..." she muttered as she ran her hoof across the books on the shelf until she found one that might be interesting. she trot

ted out of the library and twitched an ear when she heard another pony in the hall.

"h-helo? is somepony there?" she called down the hallway.

Fire was in the training ring with a pony who was holding a dummy on a stick. Fire quickly rolled to her left, spun around, the kicked the dummy off the stick with one of her back legs. she felt a blaze working up in her front talons, so she quickly took to the sky and chucked a fire ball at the dummy. Fire Runner landed gracefully next to the pile of ashes, the helper pony was shaking so much they didn't dare to move or upset Fire.

Gladius shrugged.

 

"Well, one of us has to decide on something to do or else we're just going to be standing here forever. We can continue the lessons we started last night if you want. I've got a pair of sparring blades and a dueling ring out back we could use."

Diamond nodded. "Okay." She said, taking a few steps back. "Before we start...you and this other Gladiator are both good fighter's...right ? You said he was also one of the better ones so that mean's if you two work together...this is going to be easier...right ?" She asked. She just wanted to be assured that Gladius had a better chance than he did...

(OOC: I don't know where Fire is...but Scar is waiting outside the arena to fight...)

Scar smiled as the doors slowly opened and his name was announced...but his smile faded as the crowed booed.

His opponent grinned as he noticed Scar's rather annoyed look.

They both walked out into the center of the arena so they were a few feet away. They nodded at each other and both got into a fighting stance.

There was a loud *Clang* from the bell and instantly the pony raised his sword ran at Scar.

Scar lazily stepped out of the way and spread his wings. Using his wings to give himself some extra speed, he ran at the pony and gave him a few large scratches.

The pony swore and turned around to glare at Scar. He raised his sword high above his head and swung it down towards Scar who jumped out of the way but stayed close enough to grab the pony's sword with one of his claw's.

The pony's eyes widened as Scar grabbed him by the throat and threw him to the ground. He threw the ponies sword aside and prepared to make the kill, but waited for the crowd to decide.

The crowed cheered as usual meaning that the pony could live.

Scar stood up and helped the pony to his hooves.

The pony glared at scar and marched out of the fighting ring rather angrily.

Feeling triumphant, Scar put his claw's in the air...but the crowed cheered weakly...there were even a few ponies who were booing.

Scar let out an annoyed sigh and just walked out of the fighting ring, obviously annoyed.

"Yeah, yeah Scar's one of the best around. I really think we can do it if we work together. I mean, it won't be easy, but as good as Ripper is, I don't think he has a chance against the two of us at once. Just... try not to worry, okay? I promise I'll make it out alive."
