I've never really liked either pilot episode. In fact, after watching them for the first time I almost decided to stop watching.

 

Still, it had a special something to it which to this day I can't quite place, Even though the script is laughable at times and the ending moral is cheesier than... something (I was never good at analogies), it was a blast to watch,

I think the first two eps were mainly to introduce you to the characters and all their quirks and schtuffs. I think it was mainly the characters and how much they went together and how funny/nice/*insert other good trait here* they were that had me hooked.

yes it was designed to introduce each character and give sufficient background for the show to pick up and roll with post-pilot. and it did that job very well i think. like i said before, i think the 2 episodes should be edited together for a 40ish minute single episode, might do that myself to learn the editing software (about to be starting a YT channel that has nothing to do with ponies) but i won't be posting it anytime soon if i do.

Its probably me, but I think episode one feels... odd compared to the later episodes. I can't really explain it, but something about the atmosphere of the episode doesn't fit in with the later ones. And all of the Mane 6 seem to have the typical cartoon character personality with them. Even the Season 2 opener, Return to Harmony felt like it was in place.

 

Do any of you feel the same way? I just wanna know.

The pilots of both seasons are supposed to be more serious than the rest of the episodes. It's basically there to show their character and colors. I can honestly say both premieres gave me feels.

If it felt different, it's most likely because Lauren Faust herself wrote the episode. She also wrote The Ticket Master, but didn't write any episode after that.

 

So that's probably what makes the feel different, more than anything else.

Same here, i came in at the beginning of Season 2 so i had no idea that wasn't episode 1, but a week ago i tracked down the 1st one and to tell you the truth..... Even i was embrassed to see it!

I'll have to go along with CynicalBrony's latter statement; I was hooked after Giggle at the Ghostie. I think that the season one pilot has the most "charm" of all the episodes. The show's trademark cuteness and story flow is at it's highest in those episodes in my opinion. Honestly, it felt strangely nostalgic watching it again a few weeks back. Almost cried when Pinkie was so welcoming and excited to see Twilight that she "threw a party just for her."

The pilots can't delve deep into a concept or idea because that time is used to gloss over all the main characters and their personalities to give viewers a little bit of context before presenting a plot (lol not that plot).

Personally, when I watched the pilot, I was going to quit on the show because my first impressions were cheesy, childish, and boring. However, my bro told me that it was just a pilot and that I should at least try The Ticketmaster before giving up. That's how I kept going with the show. Still, the pilot was pretty funny at some parts and it did introduce every character well.

the show is targeted at young girls, who are known quite well for not caring one bit about grandiose adventure stories. this is not a rule that applies to all, however a trend seen in a great majority.

As I mentioned before in another thread, Pilot episodes are almost always different from the rest of the show. Pilots are a dry run, there are no expectations to meet, and no flaws have been discovered that need buffing. After the pilot is shown to the studio heads and a control group of normal television viewers, thats when notes are given and things start being changed.

 

I can give you a prime example: The first episode of House. It's all sepia colored, House visits with his patient and waxes philosophical about how you can't die with dignity, there is no sexual tension between him and Cuddy, in short, it's an episode of House in name only. You can see the beginnings of the show as it was in its hey day starting from episode 2.

 

And really, in a lot of ways, MLP:FIM is like that. Twilight, while still being the serious one, is NEVER that serious again. (Except for Lesson Zero, but thats a different story.) Pinkie Pie, while still sporadic and unpredictable, doesn't talk quite as fast as the first episode again. You see far less of the Apple Family, but thats explained as they were there for a reunion. Rarity becomes less about giving and more about being a fasionista and a drama queen. Rainbow is still shown laying around on clouds, but she doesn't really have to be goaded into doing things anymore, especially if its a chance to show off. And Fluttershy is no longer reduced to choked squeeking sounds just from meeting someone new. Characterization marches on.

I actually watched the Season 2 premiere first. Then I went back and watched season 1. The first episode is a lot better once you've seen some of the other episodes first.

The first two episodes turned me off, but fortunately I watched past that before judging it. The pilots just seem overly moralistic and girly for my tastes, it got a lot better after them.
