What do you call soft drinks?

I've called it soda ever since I was a kid.  Do people actually refer to them as soft drinks?  I thought that term was dreamed up for fast food commercial use only.  And I've never seen the word tonic used anywhere. 

 

I will usually call a particular kind of soda by its generic name such as root beer or ginger ale.  But I never call a cola just cola.  It's either a Coke or a Pepsi.

Actually, a soft drink is just about any drink that contains no alcohol. Soft drink doesn't mean soda.

It has always been hard for me to find an English word for this kind of drink. In Sweden we call it "läskedryck", try to pronounce that or make up an English word for it.
