What Do You Do When Friends' Friends Are Jerks?

Suppose that Gilda had stayed in Ponyville, rather than leaving.  And she didn't change her attitude, so now all of Rainbow Dash's new friends have to deal with an antagonistic character on a regular basis.

What do you do when someone you care about brings another person into your life who is difficult to tolerate?

This actually happened to me last year when my best friend started hanging out with someone who I would consider to be a social rival. I tried to tolerate her as much as I could, but I ended up flat-out telling her that I didn't like her (element of truth, I guess). She asked for reasons and so, I gave them to her. She accepted them and we walked away. She then proceeded to flip out on me via text message later on that night. Like really, you can't say it to my face so you have to say it behind a safe text message?

Well, she's still friends with my best friend, which is fine. But I made it clear that if she's around, I won't be hanging out with her. Fortunately, my friend understands and we always make time for each other (as hard as it is with school and all).

I'd try to tolerate them, but if they kept being more and more of a jerk then I'd eventually just tell my friend that they need to stop hanging out or something, or possibly I might shy out and simply try avoiding them.

Depends on how brave I feel I guess.

Heh, that episode reminded me of 7th grade, where one of my friend's friend was horrible to me C:

She did her best to make sure i was left out of anything, she treated me horribly because she knew I wouldn't tell my friends, because, I didn't want to break a friendship they had for longer than me and my friend's. I did my best to tolerate her and put up with how she'd constantly bother me, I didn't tell my friend. While she's still friends with her, she doesn't bother me as much as she used to, though, I can still tell she doesn't like me x)

I was bullied at the end of the 7th grade. :(

There was a chick in 8th grade who just didn't like me. I was in the play and she would throw fake fruit at me. Once I won the student council election she left me alone.

I was bullied as well from the 4th grade to the 8th grade from this one girl. One day in the 8th grade, she asked me to fight her (I'm not much of a fighter, I'd rather talk things out) and I acted like she was joking.

Let's just say I left her with a black eye, two bruised shins and a sprained thumb. I didn't have a single scratch on me wink.png

I just ignore them at first. But, if they start messing with me or my friends we will have a huge problem. Let's just say that I'm usually violent, but not all of the time. I just hate when people mess with me, the last person that did that. He was left with broken ankles, bleeding from the mouth, and two black eyes.

I was bullied for a pretty long time, it'd sometimes be new people every year xD

However this one girl i was talking about was horrible, she threw my school uniform on the toilet, and i had to wear my gym clothes for the whole day. She'd also tend to hit me a lot, and me being me, I just let her get away with it, never really told anyone about her, I did once actually cry about it at school, friend saw me, that same friend who happened to be friends with her, I just said it was nothin', she did keep a close eye on me after that, along with other friends  but none ever suspected the other girl being rude to me or anything.

It is even worse when the "Gilda" is someone who has been dating one of your relatives for years, or even married to them!

Some people are able to smile and be fake nice to someone that they cannot stand.

I just don't know how they do that.  I literally can't do that.

I feel lucky seeing as I've never really been bullied. I've been pretty good at finding out who's a jerk and being on their good side to stay out of trouble. I find that to be the best way to deal with bullies - befriend them!

I do remember that one time at work, I was friends with two people who couldn't stand each other. During periods of free time, they would take turns periodically pulling up a stool next to my station just to chat, and occasionally complain about the other one. I guess each one perceived the other as Gilda. There wasn't much I could do about it except act as a sounding board and someone to vent on.

I suppose the moral here is, some people just can't get along, and if that's the case, the best thing they can do is try their best not to get in each other's way. It's a pretty big world anyway.

Now that I think about it, this happens to me a lot. It's like I have this sign on my forehead that says, "Tell me all your troubles."

I'll attempt to deal with it, though confront the person themselves face to face if the situation has become a heavy burden. I can tolerate annoyance easily, though I start bitching when the person becomes someone who is trying to take over my relationship with my friends.

I've never had a problem like that in my life. img-1594460-1-sleep.png I would probably try and tell my friend that this other pony is not getting along with me and that something should be done to minimize contact between us.

Someone with an attitude similar to hers is someone I absolutely refuse to hang out with. If I can't avoid the pony, I tell the twat about herself. Anyone who dares try to ruin my friendship with another person is my enemy.

Ugh, I've been bullied before. Mostly verbal, but I got punched a few times. It went on through most of middle school, until I finally decided to connect my fist to a kid's face when he started shoving me outside of school. I never got to clearly see how much damage I did because he ran away as soon as it happened. Word must have gotten around that I stopped taking shit, because people left me alone after that. If I wasn't so scared to hurt people back then, I would've stopped it earlier.

For the most part, I ignore them. It's very hard for me to pretend to enjoy someone's company, and when I try I end up more miserable than I would have been otherwise. In your scenario, I would avoid my friend and the mutual friend because I know I would have no fun and I wouldn't want to be friends with a difficult person anyway.

This thread has been moved back to General Discussion and its title has been edited to clarify the point of discussion better.

As for me personally, I try not to involve the friend in the problem and sort it out with the other person, or ignore it if it isn't a huge issue.

Be honest and tell your friend what you think about your friend's friend.  As long as your reasons are reasonable, your friend should be able to understand the understandable.

Well I have a really hard time tolerating someone that is a part of my group of friends that used to be my friend but isn't really anymore, but I'm forced to put up with him and he really gets on my nerves. It really annoys the crap outta me.

This is my personal matto when dealing with people like this. It has never failed me and I doubt that it will ever fail me. It is my% 100 gauranteed for success. And that motto is "Fuck em". I dont mean it like that. You dont need this person in your life at all, so just forget them. They try to approach you, tell them your not interested and walk away. They talk shit about you, why should you care what there say. Just fuck em

P.s. forgive me for cussing

I was bullied every year of school. That's right, from elementary to high school. There was not one guy or girl that liked me. That's the honest truth. That would explain where are all my inner hate and depression came from. sad.png

I just tolerate them and avoid any conversations with that person.

My friend who is two grades lower than me was bullied by a person in my grade. It had escalated to the point where the kid stole my friends wallet and shattered his phone screen. When I found out about this, he was blind in one eye for two weeks. The scary part was, I wouldn't have been sorry if it was permanent. A couple years later, I found out that he was doing it again. He broke my friends arm after school, and was not punished for it. He ended up with a broken arm and a fractured kneecap. That guy never bullied my friend again. Normally I wouldn't descend into physical violence to make a point, but he was two years older and about a hundred pounds heavier. On top of that, my friend isn't the most athletic, and he is rather shy. Basically, people will be jerks. Either let it happen forever, or do something about it.
