Zygen's Mediocre spring break drawings,Now with double the drawings!

Hey y'all! Since I'm on spring break I've had a good bit of extra time on my hands, so I spent some of that time on making pony drawings, I drew both of these well actually I drew part of the first one a while back, and finished it yesterday, and I drew the other one yesterday.

I guess without further ado I'll go ahead and show you them :).

post-7861-0-46222800-1364586072_thumb.png

This one is just my attempt at trying to make a pony drawing with a open mouth, it still looks off to me though, I really can't find out why.. :/. Gonna need some help with this maybe, or just alot of practice.

post-7861-0-53774000-1364586132_thumb.jpg

This one was just a upper body and face shot really, I just wanted to see how it'd turn out, I was actually thinking of experimenting with it and making it an avatar, but I'm not sure how great it'd be really.

Like always both are drawn with GIMP, using my mouse(M705 Logitech :P.)

I'll be honest that I really haven't been drawing ponies at all in a long while, but I do wanna get back to doing some. I also need to start working on doing more advanced things that aren't just standard shots. I plan on trying different expressions and different hoof motions, aswell as different backgrounds. That look better of course. And I'm also possibly going to be making another OC to be a partner for this  OC possibly, but I haven't decided if I am or not, and I haven't decided on a color scheme for her yet anyways.

So I guess thats about it for now, as always I'm happy to hear critique on my drawings so I can try and improve them and stop making similar mistakes over and over, and improve. I'm also open to if you want to suggest any ideas maybe for a drawing you think I should try or maybe something i should practice.

Any tips are also appreciated, even  better if you take the time to maybe even provide some form of reference or resource or something to help me.

I have some ideas for drawings maybe, but I guess my problem is going to be visualizing them well enough to draw them. Guess I'll see, I'm gonna try and get some kinda drawing done atleast one before I go back to school! And I also wanna try and get more into doing pony drawings more frequently again so we'll see how that goes.

Later y'all!

I saw the words "Zygen" and "drawings" and my face was like: biggrin.png

I think the issue with the mouth being open is that the corners of the mouth done go up far enough for it to look like a smile so it sort of looks like he just has a blank stare. I think the top of the mouth is supposed to be more curved...if that makes sense. You could also add a tongue or something to show the inside of the mouth, give it a little depth.

The back leg looks a little too long even though it's bent. And the last thing is the nostrils on the second picture should be closer together, like more under the line for his snout.

Despite all that I actually think they're really good! They're both noticeably better than the other drawings you posted before. Good job Zygen! :) I really like the backgrounds, how the colors match your OC.

It would be really cool if you designed another OC, I would love to see it! :)

Well glad to hear someone likes my drawings so much :).

I kinda get what your saying about the mouth, I'll have to try some different curves I guess, to be honest I eventually just got frustrated with it and just kinda left it as is. i thought about adding a tongue but I felt like from the angle its at it would've looked odd, plus my tongue drawings weren't exactly amazing.

I probably have a bit of length problems on the hooves since Its been a bit since I've done any drawing :P. should be able to fix it though easy enough.

I understand what you mean with the snout, I'll be sure to try and remember that for next time :).

I dunno how much better then the other ones I feel it is, maybe I'm being critical of myself but I didn't find anything particularly impressive with these drawings really.

And yeah the color splash background thing was partly me being lazy not wanting to think of a realistic background and partly experimenting. Also because I was thinking of using the 2nd one as an avvie, but I'm not sure how happy I am with it. Might have to try another pose or something.

I've been doing multiple prototypes for my other OC, I'm trying to make a color scheme that looks good while matching up well with my OC, since they're going to be basically partners (Shipping my OC with another of my OC's maybe Xd? ) but I do want to eventually finish it. Thing is color scheme is the most picky part about making an OC for me, I'm very picky and I can spend forever changing colors slightly to majorly to finish an OC, like I did with the one I have now.

Glad you like it though, always makes it more fun when people enjoy what you make :).

These are really cool! biggrin.png

I like both of them! Like MissDerpy said though, in the first one, the front right leg is a little too long. But I can't wait to see more smile.png

Hehe thanks :). I appreciate the compliment!

Yeah I agree I'll have to fix the length for the next one i do hopefully it won't be to tedious to fix.

I'm thinking about doing something tonight possibly, maybe tomorrow. It depends, but I already have an idea I think. Regardless I'd like to get another done atleast before my break is over.

you draw it by mouse , man you are awsome XD if you want better draw , you should draw it by handdrawing , and then scan or photo it , and then import it to whatever vector software do you have , and re-draw the ponies , after you finish ,  color your  ponies , DONE (bad grammar ) XD LOL

Its not that terribly difficult :P. I've had it recommended before, but I typically find this more convenient to access and such. Not even sure where our scanner is anyways :P.

Thanks for the suggestion though, and the compliment :).

those are really good pictures zygen! the best thing about them is the backround and how they blend in with your oc, if i was to give any criticism it would be to make the neck blend more with the body in the 2nd one. But apart from that they're really good. Keep it up :)

Thank you for the compliment :). Yeah the background is pretty spontaneous, but its pretty decent i guess.

I know what you mean on the neck, gonna fix that for next time.

Thanks for your compliments and feedback :).

I'm amazed at how much of an improvement you've gone through with your drawings! I made a really quick progress guide on my latest drawing for someone on the forums. It's not very good, but it's partly because I draw fast with minimal sketching. I skip out on more detailed sketching because I have a generally good idea on what goes where on a pony. However, when I first started, sketching took more time than lineart, because I sketched out every part and detail. It looked messy, but it made the lineart so much easier to draw. There's also some tricks to shading on SAI. If you need any more help just ask! I use Paint Tool SAI, but it should be similar to how gimp works.

Thanks, it means alot to hear from an artist I respect alot :).

I'm gonna be honest but I never have done sketching, I feel like I should though, but its kinda something thats always been somewhat confusing. Its just a bunch of basic shapes put on low opacity? And then you draw the actual pony over it? I don't really know exactly the benefits of it still either, i know its suppose to help, but I don't really understand why. Not even totally sure what I should be doing with it.

Its something I should probably try atleast once I imagine, I just don't quite understand its purpose totally or the concept in general partly.

I understand the shading kinda. Its just a layer on top of the rest of the drawing filled with light blue low opacity basically? I always thought shading involved more use of darker colors in certain places and maybe even the burn or dodge tools(Not sure if thats in SAI). I tried it on a drawing I had and it does kinda have a darkening effect to it. Not sure if its just me but it does kinda have a bit of a more noticeable Light blue tint and not as much of a dark and light affect that your drawing has.

I do assume SAI works sorta like GIMP more or less, probably some differences but still.

Sorry for bothering you with somewhat vague questions, I'm still not the most knowledgeable artist ever :P.

Thank you for the resource and tips, aswell as the compliments btw :).

Wowww Zygen, your art always puts a smile on my face :)

Well, drawing circles and all that and putting them on low opacity and what not so you can draw over them are just basically techniques for helping you keep the basic shape of the pony in mind and so that your lines don't stray too far. Some people find it helpful while others don't really rely on it, but it's generally a good idea to try it out and see if it works for you. wink.png I started relatively similar to the way that Drahgoon has suggested (drawing guide circles and guide lines and all that). Eventually as I continued to practice I could use less and less guides until right now the only circle left that I use is for the head. Yeah, I start any pony drawing that I do with a circle for the head. I find it helps my mind 'get started' so to speak, in visualizing the eventual shape of the pony.

I hope you find what works for you :) Have you ever thought about trying to vector? biggrin.png

Thats the goal, and in that case I guess i succeeded :).

Oh ok, well the heads practically a circle really. so drawing a circle for that and then another seems a bit pointless in a way, I normally draw a circle for it, then add the muzzle. Everything else is normally drawn without anything close to circles really.

I suppose I can try using circles and such to help my drawings look a little more accurate, I imagine it would help my body's the most(Because honestly I feel like half of my ponies turn out to be fat xD)

I'll try to use the guide circles atleast once if I can remember to.

As for vectoring. I'm gonna be honest that I still don't really understand the difference between Vectoring and drawing. Nor do I have any real idea how to do it.

For now I like drawing more or less, but of course I've never done vectoring. All I know is Vectors always tend to look show accurate.

I suppose I'm open to try it if I can understand it better and have the tools to do such.

Thanks for the compliments and help.
