books Favorite things in a story?

Blue Moon

I was wondering what things in a story do you like the most. For example, I really like it when:

-There is a sad scene in the rain.

-A villain finds redemption.

-A character has to take care of cute younger character like a parent.

So tell me what you like in a story below.

  • A very good storyline
  • Good character development
  • A sister relationship between two characters
  • Good fight scenes
  • Not too many sequels

That is what I like in a story.

Depending on what I'm in the mood for, shout-outs and references and allusions are cool. Otherwise I mostly look for character development, relationships, and a plausible and compelling backstory for each character.

Are you familiar with TV Tropes, Blue Moon? I have a feeling that you would like it. I have quite the extensive list of tropes that I adore:

  • Superiority Inferiority Complex
  • Broken Ace (the sympathetic versions)
  • Who's Laughing Now?
  • Earn Your Happy Ending
  • Heel Face Turn AND Face Heel Turn
  • Gadgeteer Genius
  • CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
  • He Who Fights Monsters
  • Heel Realization
  • Iron Woobie
  • Fatal Flaw
  • Well Intentioned Extremist
  • Foil
  • Shadow Archetype (love this one)

And I'm pretty sure there's a lot more. Basically, I love stories with strongly flawed characters that have lots of character development and fight to finally earn their happy ending. Fills me with all the warm fuzzies.

No, I haven't. But it does look interesting and I'll probably check it out.

I agree with you on strong characters meeting their goals even through their obvious flaws. It is very satisfying.

The things I really like in a story are main characters who aren't chosen by prophecy or whatever but do it on their own free will (sorry mlp). Another thing I like for epic novels and the like are to feature villains that you can empathize with who are (or at least think they are) legitimately good people. But what I like a lot in that kind of story is testosterone poisoning and manly action.

I like romance between humans and non humans (like elves and such) and romance between same sex characters.

Well choreographed sword fights.

Epic self-sacrificial deaths of characters.

The villain finds redemption.

Detailed descriptions of how magic works in that particular universe.

I think my favorite things in a book is the dialogue. The walls of text of description bore me and usually I have to skip pages because of it.

This is a bit of an odd question for me since I typically don't care what a story is about as long as the execution meets my standards of quality. That said, I can identify certain qualities I like to see in a work. I'm gonna take a cue from Stella and list them in the form of TV Tropes.

  • In Medias Res
  • Body Horror
  • Nightmare Fuel
  • Interesting Situation Duel
  • World Tour
  • Genre Busting
  • Cerebus Syndrome/Cerebus Rollercoaster
  • Mood Whiplash/Mood Dissonance
  • Mind Screw
  • Gainax Ending

For anyone who doesn't care to look this stuff up, I like inscrutable plots, exotic locations, weird situations, unpredictable tone shifts and general morbid creepiness. But again, execution is what matters. A story doesn't need any of this to enthrall me.
