Moderator note: To minimise the number of repeat discussions regarding the Furry fandom, this thread can be used to discuss all aspects of the Furry Fandom - whether that be with respect to the Brony fandom, or the Furry fandom on its own.

This thread is for discussion of all furry related things. (SFW obviously)

A few starter questions:

What furry artists do you follow? (Like on Deviantart, Furaffinity, Tumblr, etc.)

What furry series do you follow? (Webcomics? TV? Fictions?)

What's your favorite type of furry? (Mammal? Reptile? Avian?)

Do you like when non-anthropomorphic characters are turned into furries? (No right or wrong answer here!)

What is your opinion on the notion that bronies and furries are one and the same? (Once again, no right or wrong answer)

What do you think of anthropomorphic versions of MLP characters?

Remember that not all furry related material is of a sexual nature, characters like Bugs Bunny and Sonic the Hedgehog are indeed furries and there's nothing sexual about them, so let's get some variety in here!

I don't think there's any particular problem with showing something a little risque, and as far as I know it doesn't go against the rules of the site, but absolutely no NSFW images as they are against the site rules. Any NSFW discussion should be taken into personal conversation elsewhere.

NOTICE: This topic is for furries, by a furry (myself). If you are uncomfortable talking about or with furries then please kindly leave the topic. We want no flame wars or trolling here and we are not intentionally trying to cause discomfort.

Also, this is not an RP thread. Keep all Roleplaying in it's respective board.

Now to answer some of the starter questions myself to get some conversation going!

I follow a lot of furry artists; some for their furry work, some for other reasons and the fact that they are furry artists is just a coincidence. I'm not gonna bother trying to name them all but some of the ones I follow are: Blacksen, BleachedKitten, Jolly Jack (Philip M. Jackson), Jay Naylor and Slugbox. Some of these you might have heard or or follow yourself. I haven't seen a lot of activity from Blacksen or BleachKitten lately but I follow Jolly Jack and Jay Naylor's webcomics religiously. As for Slugbox I go on his Tumblr every once in a while for his pony art and sometimes his really funny reblogs.

I am a webcomic maniac so I follow quite a few furry webcomics (usually find them through ads but I find them nonetheless lol)

A few furry webcomics I read (And definitely recommend for any who wanna check them out) are:

Better Days/Original Life Better Days comes before Original Life. Both done by Jay Naylor

Unlike Minerva/You Say It First Unlike Minerva came first and jumped from artist to artist before it settled on Isabelle which continued on through You Say It First and still going strong

Pretty much everything on Katbox.net There is a group of artists that came together and created this wonderful site that hosts a small group of webcomics (drawn by said various artists) each one of them furry webcomics. I have yet to read Draconia Chronicles or The Eye of Ramalach but I absolutely love Las Lindas and the recently added Yosh!

Catena Manor This webcomic is hilarious and though it's artstyle gets gradually less realistic over time it seems to be better that way anyway in my opinion. It's been on hiatus for over a year now I think. They are doing a redesign of the series so anything in the past comics will not relate directly to whatever they do next. The artist has been keeping herself busy with other projects though.

VG Cats Here's one many people will likely know. VG Cats is popular not for being a furry comic but for being a video game comic.

That should be good for now. There's many more but I'd like to leave some for others to talk about! I don't wanna be the only one talking here. :P

I don't particularly have any preference on what type of furry I like but the one thing I don't appreciate is when furries look too human. And I mean this in the sense where they have realistically shaped human faces where it looks like someone just painted their face to look like a cheetah or something. I find those particular kinds of furries ugly as sin. I prefer them to have a more anime/cartoony air to them.

Of course I love when non-furry characters are turned into furries, that includes ponies, and generally they are some of the best kinds of furries imo. Furry pokemon are fun, for example.

I don't believe at all that bronies and furries are exclusively the same thing. That doesn't mean one can't be a furry when they are a brony or vice versa, just that being one does not automatically label a person as the other as well. They are very different fandoms that have very different focal points.

Phew, took a while to type this up. Let's hope it was worth it and this topic doesn't get buried! xD

I don't really know about furry culture at all, nor do I see myself participating, but I respect their passion and their happiness that comes from displaying their passion.

Also I wanted to post a video (if I can find it) of a furry segment on Check It Out with Dr. Steve Brule on Adult Swim. It was pretty funny.

Ahh here we go

This is a good topic. I like.

Guess I might as well answer those questions. :P

Artists: Would Renard be considered an artist? He does music... so I guess that would work.

Series: I'm a huge Sonic fan, and a crapload of furry artwork is inspired by the art style of Sonic, so that'll do.

Favorite Furry Type: I like the usual mammal type, like Renard's characters.

I don't give a care if people turn non-anthro characters into furries. If fact I do that sometimes. :)

If you wanna get technical about bronies and furries being the same, then yes. They are. Both groups do pretty much the same things. Only difference is that us bronies have that "love and tolerance" motto (that we don't go by sometimes. Ugh.)

Anthro Ponies? HECK YES! I like that idea. A lot!

...

So um... yeah! Guess I'm done here. :P

What furry artists do you follow

No idea. I just browsed through furaffinity when I'm bored. Sometimes I spotted few good arts here and there and I saved it :P

What's your favorite type of furry

Wolf kind are fine. Tho I doubt the reptilian kind could be called as 'furry'. They got no fur ._.

Do you like when non-anthropomorphic characters are turned into furries?

Honestly it's all depends on the artist. Some are good, while most of them are just plain disastrous.

What is your opinion on the notion that bronies and furries are one and the same?

It's like saying chess are just the same as backgammon, just because both of them are board games. Different source, different community, hardly the same.

What do you think of anthropomorphic versions of MLP characters?

Once again, depends on the artist. Some are good, some just drives me to wash my eyes with holy water

Honestly I won't say that I'm a furfag, I'm just a random guy who sometimes browsed furaffinity

lol Coming from Adult Swim I'm not surprised by what I saw. But did they really go into an actual furry's house to do that or is it all staged? It looked like they were just normal people who were (likely) being trolled but you never know.

You know, I mentioned Sonic and everything but I forgot to mention that I am a total Sonic fanboy. Not because I'm a furry but because I've just always loved the series. Being a furry is just a plus because there's definitely lots of great fanart and a lot of people take their artstyles from Sonic artstyles and it sometimes turns out real good.

No idea. I just browsed through furaffinity when I'm bored. Sometimes I spotted few good arts here and there and I saved it :P

I personally don't particularly like the term "furfag" because it sounds very deragatory and is kind of an umbrella statement too (And umbrella statements are very very bad in a lot of cases)

Also, reptilian furries are still furries even if they have no fur. Furry doesn't specifically describe them as having fur, it's just the term used for anthropomorphic creatures and characters. Anthro is probably a better term overall but they are still known as furries by the general (internet) public.

All I know is that Check It Out is a show that heavily relies on awkward funny, which John C. Reilly does a really good job at portraying lol.

He did do a very good job of that. lol

I love when things get awkward...when it's not happening to me. LOL

What furry artists do you follow?

I don't follow specific artists, I just click follow on alot of stuff on tumblr when I see something I like or I check out various furry related art sites for almost all kinds of work, not really any specific artists.

Of course I know of Slugbox, I know Jay Naylor and such, I love their work as well.

What furry series do you follow?

Well, I follow ALL of Jay Naylor's work, SFW and NSFW. All his stories are amazing, fun and very nicely done.

As for TV shows. My favorite cartoon of all time is without any doubt Tiny Toons, the whole theme is brilliant and all the characters are REALLY cute.

What's your favorite type of furry? (Mammal? Reptile? Avian?)

Personally I prefer the art style of Mammal, also personally fursonificating myself as a rabbit I often socialise with other mammals in the danish furry community, though I'm not one to judge, one of my two best friends in the community is a dragon by fursona. The other is a husky.

Do you like when non-anthropomorphic characters are turned into furries?

I don't mind it at all, though I prefer fursonas and OC works in general, when just painting general art of furry rather than turning EVERYTHING furry.

What is your opinion on the notion that bronies and furries are one and the same?

I will just copy paste Raro's point here since it's the same as my own.

I don't believe at all that bronies and furries are exclusively the same thing. That doesn't mean one can't be a furry when they are a brony or vice versa, just that being one does not automatically label a person as the other as well. They are very different fandoms that have very different focal points.

What do you think of anthropomorphic versions of MLP characters?

Well, I prefer to keep my ponies as ponies, and I've even found that to be a bit strange from my own standpoint. But, to me ponies is a different thing than anything from the furry fandom and I prefer to keep it that way. I don't mind the art at all, but I just prefer them as actual equines.

I'm sorry for not actually posting much of a dicussion here except answering the questions. I'm kind of tired and will peek back at this thread another time.

Heya everypony, furries and bronies have been at each others throats at the beginning when bronies came into existence and well there are still those few who dont like bronies, but im a furr and i love being a brony too, so if there are any other furs out there who are like me *brohoof*

*brohoof* honestly i dont understand it, im a furr too, bronies and furries are the same thing, even though we dont like to admit it.

except it isn't.

you're kind of lucky you're stating that on this forum, since on other places you may have received backlash from saying that, from experience.

the whole pony fandom centers around the show My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic, while the furry fandom centers around the interest of anthropomorphic animals. you can be a fan of both, yes, but most people generally aren't (like on this forum; i'm a furry, you two are, i'm sure there is a handful more that are on here, but as a whole, the majority ain't).

the problem with this whole thing is that the fandoms collide with each other at points, and a lot of people don't favour the other part; whenever there is an 'unusual' piece of fetish art upped on ponibooru, it receives slander, and most people are quick to label it "FURFAG ART KILL IT WITH FIRE". likewise, ponies and pony art have been frequenting furry sites, and furries there tend to be just as quick to label bronies and the pony fandom with the "ponyfag" label, telling them they are "immature" for watching the show. and the cycle continues.

there's little to be done about it, really. people are stupid and will continue to be immature and label each other stuff like this. best thing you can do is try and stick with the decent people from the fandoms or something. there's the decent bunch of apples alongside all the rotten ones, after all.

I agree that there's similarities between ponies and furry, but they're not the same thing. MLP is a show with anthropomorphic characters that fans tend to like for the cuteness or the humor more than the talking animals factor, and while fans do sometimes take part in creating "ponysonas" and roleplaying (and yes, pony porn) it's really not comparable to the furry fandom, which is a general interest in enjoying the anthropomorphic characters themselves and of a fantasy world where a fan can be one of them. One community tends to look down on adult content, while in the other one the same type of content is so central to the communities and the experience that you're hard-pressed to even go on a PG website without receiving solicitations for cyber sex or finding porn that the moderators can't remove fast enough some days. The focus is different even if some of the content is found in both communities.

Oh how simple threads turn into long debate threads x3

I don't think bronies and furries are the same thing.

Just because the characters are ponies, doesn't mean we are furries.

Bronies and furries are simply different on the fact that bronies only really like the My Little Pony show. while there are degrees in how much this fandom goes, it is quite similar to people who like Star Trek or Star Wars.

Furries on the other hand really like an idea of anthropomorphous animals, not a specifically created thing. While there is hardly a huge basis for comparison. It is very different from liking a TV show.

While there can be specific overlap between the two, one does not mean the other.

I don't think we are.

But well, if all ponies looked like this

Posted Image

I would have to agree.

I require a pillow of that.

OT: I as well don't think that they're the same, but have absolutely nothing against them. You can like what you want to like, and it isn't really anypony else's buisness unless it's affecting them in some way. I'll stick with ponies for now though :)

Well, Bronies and Furries aren't technically the same, although we sometimes do share the same problems with the haters. I'm not a Furry, Brony sure but I don't have a problem with Furries, unless it's this guy on youtube xD....
