Blast Box 22 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 (edited) It seems like the question of the thread is met by somewhat mixed results, most of which seem to be a lack of understanding what being a furry is. Personally, I always felt it was a state of mind, more than a fandom or physical community. I think the idea of furry was captured best in this old poem. It's one that's stuck with me over the many years. I did NOT write this, I've kept it word-for-word, not a single line or word has been changed. But I hope some of you may get a better idea of what it is to be furry. :3 "Furry"If the true meaning of furry you wish to understandYou must think in terms of paw and not handYou must release your mentality from society's cageFor furry prefurs no race, sex, persuasion or ageYou must sort through the hype and the exploitationBecause to be furry needs no justificationIt is to reach out and embrace the unknownTo be surrounded by friends and yet still be aloneIt is not a gimmick or a political movementIt's nothing so pretentious as a method of improvementIt's only to seek solace in the presence of friendsFor when one is furry, the search never endsIt is sometimes to be controlled by one's emotionsIt is to often be unsure of depths of devotionIt is the sweet pain of impossible dreamsIt is never quite as close or as far as it seemsIt is feelings being known without words being spokenIt is the inevitable occasional heart being brokenIt is the type of love that now seems clicheIt's experience gained from having learned the hard wayIt's a smurgle, a fuzzle, a rumble or purrIt's scales and whiskers and tails and furIt's what we are, not outside but withinIt's the binding force that makes us all kinIt's a howl in greeting to friends held dearIt's a bristling growl when confronted by fearIt's a friendly lick or scritch to show that we careIt's a deep understanding, a compassion that's rareIf what it is to be furry you still don't comprehendThen consider this advice, my curious friendIf you're willing to respect that which you don't understandThen come take my paw and I'll take your hand."Furry" by Croc O'Dile w/help from Tony DeMatio - 6/95 Edited December 3, 2013 by Blast Box

Fhaolan 4,448 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 Heya. It's been a long time since I was active in the Furry community. If anyone here remembers/heard of Fhaolan the Celtic Wolfie, it's me.
FoxyCryptid 4,325 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 Kinda, I was big into it High-School, but I've stepped back to just being into the artwork and web-comics now because of all the drama and bullshit that tends to happen in furry communities. Sweet Dreams 1,891 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 I'm not one yet, but I might ask a quick question that's probably going to sound really stupid. So, when you make a furry character, does it have to look human, or can you just have a regular animal as your fur-sona? I'm sorry, I don't know much about this fandom. .-. If you're concerned about a fandom, you're looking at it from the wrong place. It's something YOU can relate to, something you find solace or similarities in. Something YOU like. There are many feral-sonas out there. Point is self-expression, no need to worry about a fandom's judgment. They're not you.

Some people will get picky, but fandoms always have kill-joys like that in them. Fully animal in appearance is fine, as long as the character is presented as having human-like behavior and intelligence.

A fursona can still be in larval stage of an idea or concept of the character. Sometimes using the feral aspect of the animal helps it evolve as the fursona takes shape (much like a rocket's launch pad). Or even as the person it belongs to evolves as an individual.
~Master~ Button Mash 2,304 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 *raises hoof* I'm a furry, too. :3 It's kind of fitting that I'm a brony, too, because my fursona is equine. I was in the process of making him when I became a brony, so in the end I just anthro'd my ponysona and he's my fursona now. xD
Klopp 2,050 December 3, 2013 Share December 3, 2013 Probably something even the ancient members who have known me for a while don't even know about me, but I'm a furry myself and have been for about 8 years or so... at least that's when discovered there was a name for it. In reality I've been a furry my whole life. Always been into the whole anthropomorphous animals and the like. I mean, most furry creatures and such are just a billion times prettier than us weird monkey things. A nice combination humans intelligence and epic hand grippability with the beautiful, sleek fur and warm fuzzy snuggliness of animals is just impeccably awesome in my mind. My favorite furry animal is... every kind, really. I like 'em all, but my personal Fursona is the same as Aryletts. Her own species called Messengers, but instead of a fox mine is a lynx type. She'll be working on the art for mine after she gets finished with some other artwork. :3
Davorin'sWrath 3 December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 Meee! I have been a furry for a while now and just recently got into the making of fursuits. C: I am an amateur fursuit maker, and currently only make partial pieces, like the heads, tails, feet, and paws. ~Silver Essence~ 2,620 December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 I'm not a furry, but I do like their art, and folks all around. I do wish I had a bat persona, which would be awesome, but the time will come when it needs to.

Just_Because 25 December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 Can someone explain to me in simple straight-forward terms what a furry is? I read that poem that was posted earlier but it didn't really explain it for me. The only times I've ever heard the word used is to describe someone who has a sexual attraction to non-human animals. Is that what it is or is there something else/more to it? I'm not here to judge anyone, I'm just legitimately curious and want to understand. Again, simple and straight-forward terms would be best. Thanks!

Furry refers to 1) A character that has both animal and human characteristics, also called an 'anthropomorphic animal'. It can vary from an animal with a human-like consciousness all the way to a girl with cat ears and anything in-between. Many people narrow it down to just the half/half mergings where you have bipedal animals who wear clothes normally, but not everyone uses that definition. Disney's Robin Hood from 1973 is one of the archetype furry movies. 2) A fan of anthropomorphic animals. A member of the 'furry fandom'. Used similarly to 'Brony' being a member of the My Little Pony fandom. While some members of the fandom are sexually attracted to the characters, this subgroup being called 'Yiffers', this is no different than the subgroup of Bronies that are called 'Cloppers'. RainbowGlitter 13 December 9, 2013 Share December 9, 2013 I don't know if I count as a "furry" I don't identify as one or have a fursonna and I am not part of the furry social groups at all but I draw and appreciate anthro art. I love animals a lot too.

SomariFeyWright 775 December 10, 2013 Share December 10, 2013 (edited) I am by no means a sexual furry... but then again, I'm not sexual at all. Keeping in mind that the furry fandom implies an appreciation for anthropomorphized creatures... I'm all for it. I don't have a fursona outside of my ponysona, which I say counts, but certain furry-oriented creatures, like the characters from Sonic the Hedgehog or Klonoa, appeal very much to me, and admittedly, I HAVE found some fancrushes in the mix. (And for what it's worth, my dream appearance is me with a cat ear-tail combo and girl clothing, so yeah.) So yeah, mild furry, with nothing but respect for them~ Edited December 10, 2013 by SomariFeyWright
River 59 December 12, 2013 Share December 12, 2013 (edited) Title explains all. How do you feel about them? [Also, technically, bronies are furries.] I don't mind them. I feel like I'm somewhat a furry because of MLP. I am terrified of anthros though. Edited December 12, 2013 by River

I know what they are in sense and I dont mind them but it is not my thing... I remember a day last April Fools Feld0 changed the site name and the banner a user submitted and it was MLP Furrums for a week xD The furry fandom is a subculture interested in fictional anthropomorphic animal characters with human personalities and characteristics. Examples of anthropomorphic attributes include exhibiting human intelligence and facial expressions, the ability to speak, walk on two legs, and wear clothes. Furry fandom is also used to refer to the community of people who gather on the Internet and at conventions. (ref) It's a little more drastic than the pony fandom. They make costumes and stuff, and even clop a lot more. But the Brony fandom has its weird parts.

River 59 December 12, 2013 Share December 12, 2013 Oh yeah you would be right about that one lol o.O Surely, but if the brony community is also part furry, then we'd be hypocritical on some levels by calling them weird. However, I learn to love and tolerate everypony even if they're pretty weird. :3
