Isn't it common knowledge that all is in their own special way very bad.

 

Fan fiction isn't really very good on either spectrum, even very good fan fictions tend to fall short and have many paradoxes and major flaws from original sources. However;

Now I'm no expert on fanfics, but I think it's better to find out what's good than what's bad right? Instead of asking what to avoid, ask for recommendations from others and spend your time reading those. Especially since, lets be honest here, most fanfics from any fandom aren't that great, so knowing what's good will help you a lot more. You should also elaborate on what genres or concepts you are into, as well as what you don't like.

   The worst MLP:FiM fanfiction I have ever read has been King of Equestria (granted I have not read many other fanfictions (in general)). Although it seems like a troll fanfiction, one can never be sure. Just look it up if you want a good laugh.

 

   P.S If you want a real laugh, look up My Immortal (fanfiction).

I think it is one called titian goes to equestrea  it's on fanfiction.net. I don't think the writer was joking around when he made it( Hopefully he was). Sadly It actually has five chapters and the writer said he was planning to make 50 sigh.

There are a number of fanfics that try to cash in on the popularity of the more gorey fics like Cupcakes or Rainbow Factory, a lot end up failing hilariously. I would avoid those in the horror genre if anything 

But that may be just me finding it kind of funny to think about it the actual MLP universe.

Most horror ones are. I personally thought that Cupcakes was utter sh*t, and Rainbow factory wasn't that much better. Rainbow Factory's only redeeming quality was its amazing sequel, Pegasus device. Seriously, go read that one.

Oh, there was this one fanfic I read (or, well, tried to read) that crossed over Ocarina of Time and MLP, and did so with Fluttershy being Link.

 

I stopped reading as soon as Fluttershy was being courageous and fighting exactly like how Link would instead of cowering in fear before defeating her enemies through alternate, less-violent means. Not that it was written well either. Only thing about it is I can't remember the title, just the premise.

When it comes to fanfics, tread carefully among "accusation fics". Many are written just so the author can vent his or her frustrations about a certain episode or aspect of an episode they didn't like, rather than tell a meaningful story.

 

For example, "What's Eating Rainbow Dash". Now, there are those who actually like this fanfic because they think it takes a fascinating look at Rainbow Dash's psyche following the events of "Mysterious Mare Do Well", and indeed, it does present some intriguing ideas, such as RD's humiliation not ending just because the episode ended...except the story focuses on the entirely made-up concept that everything wrong with the episode is Twilight's fault, and hers alone. As a result, poor Twilight becomes the author's personal punching bag, while all her other friends get a free pass because apparently only Twilight is the one who thought disguising themselves as a superhero and doing stuff that unintentionally humiliated Rainbow Dash was a good idea. Yeah, remember when that was explicitly stated in the episode?

 

Apparently some readers are fine with that.

 

Mind you, not all accusation fics like this are trash. Hell, me and a few others working on making an animated adaptation of one we thought handled its subject matter really well, but could've been shortened up a bit.

I have no problem with grimdark or gore, but this was just so haphazardly written and is just a bad Cupcakes knock off.  Cupcakes was at least entertaining with deranged Pinkie Pie.  Deranged Rarity fails to impress.

It was so bad FIMfiction had to nuke the comments section THREE TIMES because of all the flak it was getting. The third time they just gave up and made the story link-only. You can't even find it in a search. It used to be completely incoherent, but when some beta editing made it readable, it was revealed to be offensive and trollish as well.

When I read fanfiction, I usually like to search out stories that are very good. MLP stories have so far left a very good impression on me, in part due to the fact that the very first ponyfic I ever read (No, it wasn't FO:E) was freakin' incredible. I suggest OP do the same, he should look for fics that are excellent, and spend some time in the recommendations thread.

 

But, that in mind, of course there are still going to be a few stinkers. In particular, everyone and their mother screamed at the top of their lungs ordering me to read My Little Dashie, and when I finally read it, it was easily one of the most god-awful things I'd ever read. I'm not going to go into pages and pages of detail about it like I did in my blog post, but I will say that I can't recommend MLD to anyone.

 

Other notable stinkers I've read are unfortunately fics that could have been excellent under a superior writer.

 

My Little Old Republic shows this in spades by not even having the courtesy to think up a clever title. I gave this fic every chance I could, and the characterization was even decent at times, but I had to stop reading about 5 chapters in because it really didn't care about being anything but a find/replace fic.

 

It had bipedal ponies repeating the exact plot of the game with little innovation, and didn't even have the courtesy to use OCs, ponify the language, or be true to the characters. Making Rainbow Dash the Republic Trooper isn't clever on its own, you need to put your own spin on things instead of just changing the names.

 

Parliament of Dreams, which I hesitate to call terrible, is another example of a story that could have turned out much better than it actually did. It seemed to be shooting for maximum convolution with minimal inspiration, and didn't really know how to pull off any of it plot points well. Instead of sticking with its interesting premise of a futuristic Equestria where cutie marks no longer exist, it shoots off into a million different directions at once.

 

It never shows even a hint of originality (even going out of its way to rip off Fallout: Equestria and 2001: A Space Odyssey at times), and it never even tries to be faithful to the MLP universe. It's a missed opportunity, no matter how you slice it.

I can think of a few bad fan fictions that are just horrible for the most obvious reasons such as the Spiderses, Sweet Apple Massacre, and Trixie's Funhouse.

 

Then I can think of a few fanfics that are bad just because of what kind of content is in them. One of the worst of these is 120 Days of Blueblood. It's supposed to essentially be a parody of this other novel called 120 Days of Sodom which was horrible in and of itself. I recall one seen in which if I recall correctly involves Luna ripping out a foal's eyeball, Blueblood masturbated on it, and then Luna eats it. It was just a disgusting piece of crap to read.

Literally every story that has to do with underage sex. (I WILL NEVER READ ONE) It sickens me. Stories like that I seen in the feature box make me die a little inside.

 

I'm surprised it's even allowed on fimfiction.

Have we ever assumed that a gore fanfiction would be any good? I find them entertaining to read, because the author seems to assume that their work was meant to be taken seriously. A word to the wise: Copious amounts of blood and gore does not a good fanfiction make.

Uh, I would call Patty Cakes as an example of a bad fanfic, but that's only one. I would say mostly any Scootaloo adoption fanfiction. They weren't bad in terms of writing, but a lot of them have her crack a confession at first glance, and it was sad to see her live on the streets, but sadder to see how easily taken she was! If those ponies weren't really the ponies she knew, she would be taken instantly!
