Metal covers a wide variety of sub-genres and what you just listed is mostly just the more extreme stuff in the death metal vein.

I like some metal, I mainly lean towards stuff with clean sung vocals(or at least not screeching all the way through) and a clean and crisp sound(although there is exceptions, like some of Demon Hunters stuff) so I have a guilty pleasure for glam/hair metal. Some of it also comes from me finding really extreme lyrical content a turn off(as in gore and overly dark and evil stuff)

No blast beats + clean vocals = not trve metul LEL

But like, I find clean vocals annoying most of the time. That's why I dislike power metal so much. The vocals are just so cheesy, but that's just my two cents.

I listen to most froms of music. (heavy metal is probably the genre i listen to the most, after post hardcore i think..)

Though it seems like most people don't see the difference between most metal subgenres and emo. (it is really annoying)

I listen to both metal and emo/post-hardcore stuff. Sure it gets annoying when people can't tell them apart, but I really enjoy both.

I said the exact same a few hours ago. (in norwegian though but still)

All genres can be nice of only made nicely. (may I eat that toast please?  )

I had always wondered why that was. It's rather rare to find someone who doesn't like clean vocals. Most people either hate harsh vocals, tolerate it, or like them but usually prefer clean vocals.

Also, imo, cheese makes everything better. I'll never understand what people have against cheese. It adds a ton of personality to anything.

For me it's the opposite. I get much more feeling and enjoyment from clean and skillfully sung vocals than I do growling and screeching. This is about as heavy as I'll get, and it's even towing the line a little bit:

and I honestly like this more:

"You know, I don't know who or what you are Methos, and I know you don't want to hear this, but you did teach me something. You taught me that Life's about change, about learning to accept who you are, good or bad. And I thank you for that."

It's weird, throughout my teen years I used to dismiss death metal because I absolutely hated the growling. I thought it sounded ugly, took no skill, blah blah blah.

Now that I'm finally overcoming my adolescent prejudices and getting into metal, I'm shocked to find that I think just the opposite. I have nothing against clean vocals but few things match the sheer adrenaline thrill of incoherent growling and screaming.

I only like clean vocals when they're done correctly in a NOT cheesy manner. Here's a great example.

It pretty much ruins the whole song for me. It puts this layer of awfulness. It's like an a certain type of spice that I'm allergic too.

I'm trying to me mean here, because I have found the little bit I've heard from catchy, but how is Type O Negative not cheesy? It's pretty cheesy horror movie in music form.

They're Goth, how exactly can you find anything cheesy about it? It's slow and poetic song, if anything it's an Edgar Allen Poe poem in the form of a song.

From Wiki Their lyrical emphasis on themes of romance, depression, and death resulted in the nickname "The Drab Four"

You and I obviously have vastly different standards of "poetic", looking up the lyrics(because between his style and my crappy sound drivers I can't understand him, if anyone wants to help me fix this thing, I'd love to know) it's far from that to me. There's to many lines that veer off into narmy shock-rock cheese.

For me kinda darkish and poetic and something more like(forgive me, I'm having trouble thinking of examples tonight):

"From grace she will fall
An image burning in her mind"
Nothing cheesy about that.

I thought the vocals in that song were annoying, and the guitar sounded way too "bright".

I guess we're going to have to agree to disagree.

Yes, then there's lines like:

"She'll burn in hell

Her soul done medium well

All through mass manual stimulation "

Despite how deep some of it sounds, it's just dressed up horror movie schlock akin to a artsy-looking exploitation movie.

Personally, the things you described were what I love about the song, I love his singing and the music gives it a interesting mood that's kind of like a bittersweet to match the way the lyrics view death.

It's more of a form of black humor. I can think of many songs that have similar lyrics as well as sarcastic and ironic lyrics that overall don't sound cheesy at all.

I didn't say it was bad, but it is cheesy either way. I for example love the hell out of the 90s pop I grew up on, but I'll admit it was cheesy. Being that way can sometimes even make it better because it makes it endearing.
