I was thinking Second French Revolution (1848), German Unification (1870), or British Raj India (post-1858), possibly Late Ching Dynasty China (1850-1911). This isn't supposed to completely reflect and compared with Equestria, but weapons from that time would be used and the characters would be referenced off people of that time.
