books What is your favorite genre of literature?

When you decide to read a book or fanfiction, you pick the type of genre that you know that you'll enjoy. So, I ask you. What is your favorite genre of literature? Whether it be action, adventure, horror, mystery, or whatever. Tell us and give a reason why.

My favorite genre of literature is romance stories. It may sound lame and boring to some, but I find great excitement and plenty of heartwarming feelings to be had when I read romance stories. Reading about two characters falling in love and overcoming all obstacles just to be with one another melts my heart just about as much as seeing cute ponies does. I also find that these type of stories helps put a smile on my face when I'm feeling down.

It must seem real awkward for a guy to say that, but I'm not ashamed of it. I love romance. It's a wonderful thing. :)

Romance. :3

I'm not sure why, but I really enjoy romance. Some stories are just so cute, then there are others which are more explicit. I can't explain why I like them though, I just do. ._.

I love cute and explicit stories as well. Heh, I'm not picky over it. As long as it is romance, I'll read it. I mainly read romance stories about MLP because I find those adorable on so many levels. Also, because I love shipping.

Probably fantasy. I've just always loved it a lot and my two favorite series are fantasy. (Lord of the Rings and A Song of Ice and Fire.) Its just amazing how these authors can come up with such huge and detailed worlds in their minds and then put it down on paper so perfectly. I also really enjoy sports books. Biographies, autobiographies, past-teams, you name it. I even love statistics! I have the most up to date MLB and NBA prospectus.

For normal non-MLP literature it has to be Sci-Fi + Fantasy for the reasons Super Derpy stated above. It isn't the fact they can create these world's that I respect the most, it's the way they can make them come alive on paper. That's something I've never really been able to pull off with my stuff. For me, the world building is fun and easy. The execution is hard.

For MLP, I'm kind of ashamed to say crossover. There's just something about the way the world's I love interacting with the MLPverse I find really thrilling. For me, Twilight learning about the Imperium of Man, the Half-Lifeverse, the Haloverse ect never really gets old. I know many fanfic elitists look down upon this genre, but I genuinely really like it. That said, there are A LOT of bad ones out there.

Also, Romance.

I like Horror when it's done right.  My favorite book is Steven King's Carrie.  I love how the character is set up and how descriptive his writing style is when describing deaths and back-stories.

When reading MLP stuff I usually like Romance (non-clop) or Dark/sad (non-grimdark).  I don't why I like sad/dark fics.  Probably because I like a good story that really makes me cry.

Hmm, I'm thinking action horror?

I just finished reading the hunger games and it was so so awesome! I love stuff that makes me think as well.

I've only ever read like 10 books in my life, so I'm not really sure I have a genera yet. I mainly only read scientific things like papers !

Favorite author is Stephen King so...Horror-suspense, maybe. Big fantasy fan too. Also porn. That's a genre, right?

As for fanfics, I don't read much but pretty much anything good...I mostly read my own. XD

I'm pretty sure porn isn't a genre, but it can be categorized in the romance genre under explicit. So, yeah, a little info from your friendly neighborhood librarian here. :P

Adventure definititely! A close second would be Slice of Life type stories... But the two categories are kinda polar opposites.

I guess it just depends how well-writen the story is.

By the way, did I mention that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is a GREAT adventure series? I could read it every single day...

For normal books, I'll read pretty much anything, but my favorite would either be horror or fantasy. I've always enjoyed the new worlds in fantasy books, but I've lately started to enjoy horror stories. I like how dark they are, and if done right; they can be amazing.

For MLP stuff, I'm more of the opposite. I really don't like adventure stories in My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic fanfictions as they are rarely done well, and usually are boring and/or not well-written. Not saying all adventure stories are bad though; I'm sure there are some good ones out there.

But anyways, for MLP stuff, I tend to like dark/sad slice of life stories. I also like grimdark/horror stories (Yes, I actually enjoy those types of stories.) It's interesting to see things that would never happen in the show.

  • 2 months later...

My personal favorite genre happens to be Horror. Horror is my favorite all-time genre in everything, including video games, movies, etc... I just enjoy being scared and feeling uncomfortable. It's hard to explain, but I love feeling scared.

I'm a big fan of Dystopian novels, my favorite being Anthem by Ayn Rand. Other than that I really like reading history books, and learning about the past, and whatever genre John Green novels are haha. Oh, and I read a lot of manga if that counts.

I have been wanting to get into the Fantasy genre, but I don't know where to start.

First off, I hate romance novels.  I can deal with it if it's not a main part of the story line, but full on romance makes me want to barf.

When it comes to my favorite genre, I'm really indecisive.  It's between Fantasy and Horror though.

I would try out Inkheart or Fablehaven.  Both are really good, well known, and were the first books I read of the genre.  Percy Jackson is also good.

I always enjoyed the fantasy elements in books like Harry Potter. However, my guilty pleasure would have to be romance novels. And no, I don't mean stupid contrived love triangle stories like Twilight. I mean actually good stories with interesting characters.

Horror, mystery, and adventure are my favorites. That's one thing I definitely have in common with Twilight, I'm an egghead :P

I actually became the librarian's student aid every morning in high school just so I had an excuse to sit down and read books in a quiet place ^_^ All I had to do was check out books to people.

Slice of life and romance stories are okay, but the genres I mentioned above are way better :)

I like fantasy, mystery, action, and adventure. I'm also drawn to utopia and dystopia books, as well as high school dramas. To be honest though, I don't care as long as the story sounds good.

As for MLP, pretty much the same thing except I don't like yaoi and yuri fanfics.
