It is because you beat on minor weak nations and with less technology (talking about the colonies) . They were not very good when it came to other European powers in terms of land warfare. I don't think they deserve much praise for beating people with sticks

To be fair every empire at that time did the same Just look at how many African countries were taken over by France etc. We held our own in WW1 and 2 to be fair, but eh.

I know that, but even so, it's debatable as to how big of an impact that played overall, I mean, the armies were equal in strength. We won equally as important battles like Trafalgar which were just as decisive in defeating Napoleon.
