In equestria girls, Twilight asked if she would be expected to lead a kingdom of her own. This would be an epic plot twist, and the Mane other 5 could be the Princess advisors.

 

This would also result in a new land claim for Equestria, or Twilight COULD lead Ponyville as a MIGHTY TRIBE OF... Ponies.

I would imagine Twilight eventually does lead a kingdom, as she is the only princess without one atm.
