The way I had it figured - there was the main team with clockwork slightly ahead: Ronin had taken off to 'scout' and run into them. They were supposed to have entered from the same passage that the group had come in through. It's not impossible to believe that clockwork actually turned down the right path they were heading for, while Ronin ran past it. Or that the came from a side passage. It's all quite ambiguous.
