The sky is blue because of photons and light waves. When white light hits our atmosphere, it breaks up into red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet light. However, only the blue is visible because it's scattered by oxygen atoms. In reality, the sky is all colors, but the reason we see blue is the fact that blue light is scattered the most by oxygen atoms. The blue light is dominant in the sky and thus turns the sky into a blue hue.
