  1. Average Town: there's nothing remarkable about it. It's neither exciting nor boring. I think you can use an average town if part of your story discusses *why* the town is so plain, or if your story reveals a surprising aspect of the setting.
  2. When I was a young man... I never thought I'd be over thirty. But now I am. Awesome.
  3. I've spent a good amount of time browsing alternative / underground comics with intentionally ugly characters. Fascinating stuff, though I'm usually not inclined to buy it. There are still some video games with cute and pleasant aesthetics. However, I've watched the numbers of video games with a bleak / realistic graphics increase dramatically, and become huge best-sellers. I'm not terribly happy about this trend. If most characters of Friendship is Magic were abrasive and difficult to look at, I would likely avoid watching the show, and consider it to be just a curiosity. Hmm... I played the Nintendo DS version of Tokimeki Memorial Girl's Side, thanks to an English fan translation patch. I liked the character designs. Are the characters compelling, detailed individuals? Not really. But the game as a whole was entertaining. So yeah, even if Friendship is Magic had forgettable characters who didn't grow much, or achieve much, I might enjoy it just for interesting visuals.
  4. 1. Leave Chicago OHare airport early afternoon on April 16 2014, using United. 2. Arrive in San Francisco SFO airport. Find out where I can catch a shuttle to my hotel. 3. ?? 4. Profit! That's an impressive level of commitment.
  5. When there's a story arc that gets dragged out, with a ton of subpar filler episodes... That was right around the time I played the *first* Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest games. I kept up with the former all the way through 2000, and I was enthusiastic about the latter as recently as 2011. Also, I was watching a number of cartoons (usually the stuff marketed toward guys) at the time, which I kept up until my mid-teen years.
  6. Princess Sunbutt said, "I wish I could stay for the three days, but as I live in the UK, ive only got two weeks in the States, and I'll be visiting New York and Chicago in that time too!" That's quite an extensive trip. You could spend two weeks in either one of those cities, get to experience its highlights, and find some time to relax. Hopefully things will work well for you. Take some time to read articles and find other media about fan conventions. When doing your research on the topic, look for sources that aren't some jaded fan ranting about trivial matters. One good resource is fancons.com.
  7. Gen Con Indy has a Spouse Activities Program. The event page is currently outdated, but I assume it will happen in 2014. Unfortunately, I don't think there's anything similar at Bronycon... *If* you decide to visit Baltimore, perhaps your significant other will want to tour the city. It has five useful free buses, and a good number of neighborhoods are reasonably safe.
  8. Thanks for the replies. My main goals with this thread are 1) to find convenient and decent food near the con, and 2) to understand how much I should look for a cab if I'm leaving the con late at night. Hopefully I made that clear... As far as I can tell, there should be some restaurants within a few minutes' walk which are neither terrible nor horribly overpriced. For instance, I know from attending Anime Central that it's counterproductive to walk three blocks' north just to go to an average McDonalds, since there's better food right next to the con site that's only slightly pricy. And yes, I have walked in some cities and unfamiliar neighborhoods after dark. This will be the first time I'll be in San Francisco as an adult. I will have some time before/after Babscon to tour the city. Will be using trains, and either focus on sightseeing with Citypass, or take it easy and use a Muni passport to get to destinations.
  9. 1. Ask about what the person likes. 2. If possible, show a genuine interest in what they enjoy. 3. Listen first, and don't insist on imposing your point of view. Using the principles in How to Win Friends and Influence People is usually a good start.
  10. It's just over two weeks before the con starts. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the neighborhood around the hotel. Some things I'd like to know about the area before arriving at San Francisco Airport... * Local food: I found a few nearby restaurants by checking maps of the area. I'm hoping to find food in the area that's easy to get to, and neither overpriced nor low-quality junk food. * Relative safety: I know from attending other cons that it's unwise to show off expensive things when walking outside, especially after dark. But will I need to call a cab if it's late at night, and I need to get back to my hotel? * Likewise, how easy is it to find a cab? * Is there anything else notable about the hotel area?
  11. Well, they need a training arc, which leads to a tournament arc, which leads to a rescue arc, which then... Anyway, it's enough to let the characters be challenged and grow. When their story is over, move on. An idea borrowed from Bronyville: in the last season or two, let the current cast be off to the side, and focus on the CMCs trying to educate the babies. Call it G4.5 if necessary. It *is* better to burn out than fade away. Otherwise, you run the risk of ending up with a franchise zombie. Sometimes it's difficult to tell where to stop, and the problem is only clear in retrospect. Looking at the Elfquest comics, I think the story could have permanently ended in several places, the last one being the one-on-one duel in Hidden Years #9. But they kept writing after that, and I think the franchise suffered from all the continuing storylines and spinoffs.
  12. Board/card games. Anything from simple (Sequence, Apples to Apples, Tsuro) to relatively long and complex (Catan, Vegas Showdown, Flash Point). Still trying to learn deck-building games, and haven't committed to many lengthy games. I've spent many years being active in other fandoms: alternative comics, anime-manga, and video games. MLP:FIM is one of only three or four cartoons that I've watched in the last decade.
  13. After hearing about JBA back in the late '90s thanks to Animerica Extra magazine, I kept hoping the day would arrive when I'd be able to read it in English. However, even after the Viz trade paperbacks covering Stardust Crusaders started getting released in the mid-2000s, I didn't get around to reading them. I know this is a classic series, and that I should make time for reading it. How do you set aside time for reading / watching videos, rather than browsing and posting in forums (which I'm doing now...)?
  14. 1. Remember back in spring 2011, when Lauren Faust stepped down from a main role in FIM, and fans thought it signaled the impending doom of the show? Yeah. So as Sam Phillips once said, "Circle of change, the world around you, same changes. Hold on to the voice inside you..." 2. I have attended varied meetups, each with a different fandom, intent, and location. It has not always easy for me to be social and welcoming. However, I make efforts to reach out to others. I can't change other fans -- I can only change myself. During Babscon, I will minimize the number of times I yell some inane catchphrase such as "I LOST THE GAME!!" or "ICE COLD WATER, ONLY ONE DOLLAR!!" Besides, the latter phrase is specific to Otakon.
  15. Thank you for replying. I haven't attended room parties at other local fan conventions. I've thought about it, though... Maybe this time I won't be too tired or busy.
