  • Backstory

Melody Radiance was born in Canterlot to a family of successful entertainers and entrepreneurs. She is the older sister of Nightfall Gloam, a famous independent filmmaker living in Baltimare.

While Nightfall was more into drawing at a young age, Melody used to always sing and would often make songs about, really, anything she was doing in the moment, even if it was something as boring as washing dishes. This used to bother Nightfall back then, as she would sometimes include her younger brother in her songs in a joking way. Melody and Nightfall pretty much had a bit of a sibling rivalry during this time in their lives, and if they got in trouble for any reason, they'd often end up blaming each other and constantly finding ways to prank or bother each other.

In Melody's free time, she would often listen to the radio in her house's lounge room and sing along to the songs being broadcast, especially on her favourite radio station Canterlot Hits FM 88.5. She would sometimes also write her own songs or practice the piano. Outside of music and singing, Melody also enjoyed board games, collecting Wonderbolts action figures and playing with her family's pet cat, Storm. Generally, she did very well at school, especially with mathematics and music classes she had a close group of friends she used to always hang out with back in primary school.

Melody's group of friends would mostly end up going to the same high school as her, except for Velvet Stich, who moved to Manehattan. For the first couple of years at high school, it seemed like their friendships were going to last forever, but unfortunately, things started to fall apart between them. Melody tried her best to keep the group together, but there was too much drama and fighting going on in the group and they eventually went their separate ways, each joining separate groups of friends they felt more like they could be themselves in. Not long after the fallout between her former friends, Melody started to become depressed and, in the months, following, was not her usual self, being unable to find a group of friends she could belong to and failed multiple attempts to rebuild her old friend group. Her parents noticed this early on and tried to help her out as best they could, offering to take her to concerts throughout Canterlot and the surrounding area, trying to get her to join Nightfall's group of friends and even getting her to talk to her school's psychologist. Melody rejected most of the things her parents tried to get her to feel better but did later go to the school psychologist to get some help, which did at the very least help her survive the period of time after the drama with her former friends, and she did later open up about her issues with her parents.

Nightfall also began to notice Melody's loneliness and, despite them both feeling lonely for different reasons, he would often talk to his older sister about it as he couldn't handle seeing a member of his immediate family being upset and depressed for so long. It was pretty much the first time Melody and Nightfall properly got along with each other, and they both tried to help each other out through their issues as siblings, with their childhood rivalry being forgotten ever since. Later on, Nightfall also suggested that Melody should join the high school choir, as it seemed like something she would enjoy, and a friend of his had an older brother in the choir. After the holidays, Melody signed up for the choir and joined them soon afterwards.

Melody really enjoyed the choir and soon found a new group of friends there, and met a handsome stallion named Smooth Symphony, who she soon had a crush on, as she really liked his mane, eyes and the sound of his voice when he sings. During choir practice and sometimes also performances at assembly, though just enough to avoid suspicion, Melody would always try to group up with Smooth and started chatting with him during breaks. They got along very well, but at first, Smooth was not interested in a relationship, but they still got along as friends, but as they hung out, they soon developed feelings for each other.

After high school, she did not go to university. Instead, her friends from choir decided they wanted to form a band with her, and they started practicing and writing songs together, with Melody as the lead singer for the band. They performed in clubs all around Equestria and very soon afterwards, got signed to a very well-known and famous record label after an executive noticed their talent and saw potential in them. The band came out with a total of 3 albums and 1 EP but unfortunately were pretty forgotten about after the era they were formed in, with only one of their albums gaining any sort of recognition. The band broke up, but Melody and Smooth were still together despite that and her record label, noting her singing voice and the couple of songs she wrote for her band, offered her to try a solo career and she accepted it.

Her first three albums were seen as good by critics and the general public but felt like they hadn't met their full potential and her career did not fully take off until her fourth album, which is known for many classics still listened to in this day and age, and she even got to be in an interview with the host of a radio show on her childhood favourite station, Canterlot Hits, who renamed themselves to The Horseshoe FM at around this time. Despite their differences, Nightfall and Melody are still supportive of each other, and sometimes, Melody's music would end up used in Nightfall's movies.

These days, Melody still enjoys making music, although she does not make as much music as she did in her prime, and spends a lot of her time with her husband, friends, family and children. Recently, she was even able to rekindle some of her old friendships with her first group of friends, including her friend Velvet, who moved to Manehattan.
